The Pookie was a Light Landmine Detection Vehicle with Mine Protected Armored Vehicle (MPAV) features developed by the Republic of Rhodesia in November 1976. It was used by the Rhodesian Army during the final stages of the Rhodesian Bush War (1964-1979) for road demining tasks.

Most of the country was on graded dirt roads. There was no way that the Pookie operated mine detection on them at 80kph! I remember crawling along dirt roads behind one in a Puma in Mangwende North TTL in 1978 or 1979. It is worth mentioning that Rhodesia could not produce armour plate and that the hull was from specially treated conventional steel plate.
@walterscientist
@walterscientist 3 года назад
It was because of those F1 tires :D Really I'd say that 80kph was probably the top speed and as the mine detection was not really affected by speed one can say that the vehicle could detect mines at speeds up to 80kph - despite never being able to actually go that fast in practical operation. Later they say they could only move at 20kph... so I dunno - possibly later vehicles lacked the original gearbox? Putting a multi-speed gearbox from a passenger car into this contraption seems like waste of weight considering it probably only needs to ever use first gear.
@tim_14777
@tim_14777 3 года назад
Yeah as I recall alot of the early mine protected hulls were specially treated mild steel that turned out to work better than armor due "bending" rather than "breaking'? There is an excellent book, Taming the Landmine, on this topic.
@christophersilsby7829
@christophersilsby7829 3 года назад
I have heard of the US ARMY, used high speed vehicles to set of land mines, that went of behind them, because of their rate of speed. But they didn't work with "Command detonated" mine.
@markaxworthy2508
@markaxworthy2508 3 года назад
@@christophersilsby7829 I don't think that is likely. There is no delay in a conventional mine blast. It is instantaneous.
@lairdcummings9092
@lairdcummings9092 2 года назад
@@markaxworthy2508 actually, no. Even in the most sensitive detonator, there is measurable 'lock time,' during which the ignition mechanism train acts to initiate the main charge. The lock time can be *very* short (milliseconds) but is definitely not 'instant.' That said, a high-speed vehicle would be rather implausible.

The Volkswagen platform was used all round the world for various vehicles. It proved simple, cheap and indestructible so to me it is not surprising at all to see it used here aswell. Even combine harvesters came with the standard aircooled VW engine.

Calling rule by a white minority "meritocratic and segregationist" kind of rubs me the wrong way. Meritocracy is social stratification based on competence, so saying an apartheid state ruled by white people is meritocratic is either saying that white people are better, which is racist, or it's trying to say that meritocracy is somehow inherently linked to racism, which is radical left nonsense.
@JohnDoe-il9ug
@JohnDoe-il9ug 2 года назад
It's a meritocracy because the best man for the job got the job. And it was segregationist because the races have a hard time living together, who cares if it's racist why does that matter? They made it equal and it collapsed, same thing in south Africa and everywhere.

'Pookie' is the local name for a lesser bush baby, a type of Galagos, a small nocturnal predator that has acute hearing and excellent night time vision. An accurate summary of the creation of Rhodesia and subsequent civil war. Thank you for the excellent video, I remember seeing them on the roads in my youth.

The safest most effective landmine detonator was the Sherman Flail. They cleared the Normandy Beaches & inland roads in days. The concept of steamroller weight wheels with logging chains attached is still in use.

@Tank Encyclopedia have you ever heard of the device called “the vulcan”? Its this device that sets up over top of a mine or other UXO and it shoots a jet of thermite(?) downwards and consumes the explosive. I saw this on a tv show a few years back, so I may have the details wrong

One thing I might add to this vehicle is a couple of sporting field line markers on each side, that way you just fill the hoppers with chalk and lay down a marked lane of safe travel.
