I was told by my father that they are basically rotting alive while they travel upstream to spawn. But breaking down to make more room for sperm/eggs is much scarier to me.
Caecilians have salmon beat in weird ways of taking care of offspring. In some species the mother makes a burrow lays her eggs and stays with them until they hatch , when they do she will start shedding her skin for the babies to eat and she will continue to do this until she dies and thats when the babies leave the burrow. Same principle as what salmon do but much more work.

I am not going to lie but when I think about salmon that's actually how I felt as a kid. Pretty damn horrified and yet at the same time saddened by their condition how they continue in the circle of life. Even before RU-vid and well just any sort of educational experts out there started talking about salmon to me. I already knew as a kid how their circle Life starts and ends. Add an early age the first time I ever saw a zombie salmon I actually called them carpet salmon most the time
