I had watched Seven Samurai so many times before I came to Japan. When I came to Japan in 1989, they released an enhanced version of the movie and I went to see it with my Japanese girlfriend. Of course there were no subtitles. So when I leaned over and said that I like the upcoming scene because it was funny, she asked if I could understand the Japanese in the movie. I said that it was because I had seen it so many times that I had memorized the dialogue.

I think it was in The Hidden Fortress--a scene where Toshiro Mifune is pursuing other riders on horseback, and there is a brilliant juxtaposition. The other riders are seen bouncing wildly as they spur on their horses to full gallop, the men holding on to the wildly running beasts for dear life. Then we see Mifune, his horse just as wildly running, but he is raised up above his saddle taking the horse's gallop with his legs in the stirrups. He seems to be gliding above the horse, gently bobbing along, clearly in terrifying control. I believe he uses a bow from the horse, at speed; but that's less clear in my memory. The image is all the more breathtaking knowing that Mifune himself had that technique mastered.
@42kellys
@42kellys 3 года назад
Indeed. That scene makes me reminisce of our nomadic ancestors the Hungarians, who rode the horses like that and shot their arrows like from gallopping horses to kill their enemies. They came up to the otehrs' horses and fiught them off while gallopping. It was a crazy skill that only nomadic people could master. I really feel that it is like a scene from the long past of our history. And I would never believe that someone could ride a horse like that who is not one of our ancestors, and who lived just in the 20th centry, but he did. The man was the greatest of all.

It's a bit ironic when Americans movies depict samurai it's always about honor this and honor that. But the Japanese themselves often criticizes it instead of glorifying it.

True, because they know it was a lot more complex than that. Plus, there were plenty of evil, hard hearted and cold-blooded murderer samurai than honorable ones.

Exactly the reason why Ghost of Tsushima didn't sell me on its marketing pretenses of being some kind of Kurosawa-inspired work. Sure, it has a black and white filter, but it's also one of the least critical takes on the concept of honor I've ever seen in samurai fiction

Kagemusha (1980) was not only my first Akira Kurosawa film but probably the first samurai film I ever watched. It opened me up to not only Kurosawa but the genre as a whole, eventually branching out into more areas of Japanese movies and even into the movies of other countries like South Korea or China. It continues to be a frequent watch of mine and a treasured film in my collection due to its impact on me and the excellent story it tells. I definitely recommend it.

New York was a great place to broaden your palette for movies in the mid-1960s. I was a college student, but I spent more time on long walks, movies, and my girlfriend. I was working my way through French New Wave, Ingmar Bergman, and the Italian Neorealists, and having a great time doing it. One day in the mid-forties just west of Times Square I noticed a tiny ticket window next to a small doorway with two movie posters on the wall. This little treasure was all Japanese, all the time. They showed everything from the classics to the "Samurai Sheriff" series and unedited original Starman shorts. I went every time the films changed for a few years. An early viewing that made a huge impression on me was Hiroshi Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy. The bold colors; the composition; the action; the characters; the costumes. I was hooked. They showed all three movies in a row too, no fooling around. Japanese cinema became my favorite, from Seven Samurai, to the Crazy Family, to Tokyo Story, to Tampopo. I love all of it.

Goyokin by Hideo Gosha is an underrated and overlooked gem with gorgeous cinematography. After the Rain by Takashi Koizumi, based on a Kurosawa screenplay, is unforgettable. A ronin and his wife attempt to cross a river but are accosted by an ambitous lord. Yoji Yamada's Samurai Trilogy is also wonderful. The final showdown in the Twilight Samurai had me at the edge of my seat. Also Onibaba, depending on how broad your classification of the samurai genre is.

Seven Samurai is a classic meaningful story that defines the era. Yojimbo is a classic action film with a fun story. Harakiri is the best movie ever made about honor.
@42kellys
@42kellys 3 года назад
Again, not so. It is one of them. The other one is Samurai Rebellion, only fewer people have seen it.
@Poisonedblade
@Poisonedblade 3 года назад
@@42kellys Samurai Rebellion is another great movie about honor. I think Harakiri is better because it is the focus of the film. The first shot of the movie is the samurai armor... it looks badass... the last shot of the movie is the same armor... it looks hollow and empty. In Samurai Rebellion, Toshiro Mifune's character stands up to the corrupt govt and takes a stand, hoping his family line will live on after his actions.
@42kellys
@42kellys 3 года назад
@@Poisonedblade Do you mean the act of harakiri is the focus of the film or honour? I think Harakiri has tackled even more issues that Samurai Rebellion did, but they were both harsh criticism of the system. In both films we see how the samurai is abused and abuse their power especially those who were in higher station. And of course the tragic consequences of the system's and power balance's abusive dealings with the individual samurai. Samurai was to be the ruling class but in reality samurai was both ruler and victim. Both proud and humble both arrogant and also humiliated by the shogun and daimyos higher in station. Once clans are disbanded their lives sink into shame becoming homeless wanderers: ronin. There is no honour left in that. And they have the problem how to sustain their lives after losing their retainer status, home and salary. Kobayashi shows us how the power samurai has is abused, and how unjust unbending and harsh their code and conduct is to the detriment of the very people who supposed to have that power: the samurai. Both films show that in effective and in an emotional way. I believe Nakadai Tartsuya was amazing in both Harakiri and in Sword of Doom, but I love Mifune and his character in Samurai Rebellion a hundred times more. That said nothing takes away from the value of Harakiri. Just a little extra: I seriously believe that Okamoto in Sword of Doom made the best looking swordfight ever with the most special background: the swirling white snow and the black figures fighting Mifune cutting down 23 people in mere 2 minutes. There is nothing that compares to that and I saw plenty of swordfights, but this is the best and the most poetic. The beauty of the snow is nature at its best and the brutality of killing it is a bit like God's nature in its serene beauty contrasted with men, men bent on destruction whereas God is giving us enchantment in the magnificence of the snow fall.
@Poisonedblade
@Poisonedblade 3 года назад
@@42kellys I saw samurai rebellion more like govt oppression. Harakiri was about a code of honor... and how it was being abused. I don't want to leave spoilers... Sword of Doom was great and it was supposed to be a trilogy. It would have been awesome. I love the "these were good men" speech that Mifune gives after he kills everyone. "Look fool, you just threw away an entire squad of loyal and competent fighters for nothing."
@42kellys
@42kellys 3 года назад
@@Poisonedblade You do not have to be worried about spoilers because the video is also full of them and he warns everybody that it will be. So, there are already plenty of spoilers and people should know watching it that it is not a place where they may be shielded from spoilers. I also wonder how Sword of Doom would have turned out if they could have made it as a trilogy. But it is a masterpiece even as it is.

An excellent and above average overview of the genre. As a foreigner who's been living in Japan over half his life, I've always been interested in the samurai genre, esp. the concepts of fealty and honor, although those two concepts are often twisted to suit one's purpose in everyday life. Movie-wise, for me, it's The Seven Samurai. It shows every facet of society, from the real samurai to the pretend samurai (Mifune) to the farmers. Ironically, MIfune's character is right when he says that the farmers hid food, and only before the climactic battle does the leader (Takashi Shimura) find out. That movie had everything: drama, comedy, pathos, romance, realistic action--the scene where the bandit is dragged off by the horse leg-first was the first time it was ever done, I believe. Kurosawa also used slow-motion for a couple of scenes, very unusual for the time, and very effective. Kurosawa loved American westerns and was a great admirer of John Ford. I can see the influence Ford may have had on Kurosawa, and the direction of The Seven Samurai was masterful. Overall, it's one of those movies that stays with you. Not many films can make that claim.

I guess my favorite will always be Rain from Akira Konichiwa. Since it was the first movie to introduce me to the samurai movie genre. Even though it's an alternate version of King Lear. It definitely does focus and emphasize on the point of loyalty ultimately meaning nothing if you're loyal to something that means nothing. With the ending message being if the King has no clothes, it will be our job to say the King has no clothes

The Tokugawa Shogunate did not closed off Japan simply to "maintain the status quo". They did it to protect Japan from the West because they were very well informed as to what happened to other people and civilizations that allowed westerners into their land. The first of the Tokugawa Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, made the first Englishmen in Japan, Will Adams, his personal retainer (hatamoto). Adams informed Ieyasu of what was happening around the world and specifically in the Americas - the conquistadors, the conquest and destruction of the Incas and Aztecs, the enslavement of Africans, subjugation of the native peoples in all the places visited by westerners. Ieyasu understood that first came the traders and the priests, then came the invading armies. He was willing to trade with England, but the English ignored the advices of Will Adams, and their trade mission failed. Ieysau allowed the Dutch to trade because at the time, the Dutch being Protestant was at war with other Catholic kingdoms such as Spain, and Portugal.- the superpowers of their time.

Good video. It's always interesting to see the culture of a nation through its cinema. Next time, for example, you could make a comparison between the spaghetti-western genre, western movies made in Italy, and the American ones. Many American directors, including Tarantino, admired spaghetti-western movies, and it would be interesting to analyze the western genre between the two countries.

For me, it would be " Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters ". Its biographical drama about Yukio Mishima. He was a Japanese author, poet, playwright, actor, model, Shintoist, nationalist, and founder of the Tatenokai. He was recognized as one of the most important post-war stylists of the Japanese language. Mishima wrote 34 novels, about 50 plays, about 25 books of short stories, at least 35 books of essays, one libretto, and one film.. He was well known for questioning the direction of modern Japan and its culture after war, and he was afraid of Japan losing its culture and traditions. In his works, there can be seen admiration for Samurai code and noble style of living. From beauty of body to iron will of warrior. Self sacrifice for the greater good is praised a lot with quotes like " Perfect purity is possible if you turn your life into a line of poetry written with a splash of blood. ".

I enjoyed this video quite a bit. I saw Harikiri years ago at the DIA in Detroit, but summation is making me consider watching again. My favorite chambara: 1. Sword of the Beast, because of the way the story is told out of sequence, plus the variety of characters. 2. Zatoichi: The Fugitives. I like how the first four Zatoichi movies are interconnected, and I like this particular Zatoichi movie ends in contrast to most of the others. 3. Sword of Doom. Mostly for the scene where Toshiro Mifune wipes the floor with the samurai who interrupted his carriage in the snow. 4. Sanjuro. Mostly for Sanjuro swagger. "No, you'd send more men." 5. Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance, for the father's singlemindedness of purpose. "We are now beasts."

Bushido, Samurai Saga would be a good compliment to your discussion as well. It depicts a very honest retrospective of Japanese societal subservience through the ages, from post war modern times and back through history. It brings into stark focus all the high-minded principles the samurai are known for like loyalty, honour and sacrifice , they are ultimately all subservient and at the disposal of those above you.

HBO Max literary has the best Samurai content. It has the Kurosawa greats, Lone Wolf trilogy, Lady Snowblood, Kill!, Samurai Jack, and Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X).

This probably will be a bit of an odd choice but The Last Samurai is one of my favourite samurai films. It's the film that introduced me to samurai films and what began my interest in Japanese history and culture despite it being an American film.

47 ronin by Mizoguchi is not a propaganda film, it's quite the opposite.

This is really outdated. The samurai genre never ended in Japan. Taiga drama series are still being made and a new wave of modern Samurai movies have been released (to great success If I may add). The two directors that have continued Akira Kurosawa's legacy have been Keishi Otomo and Takashi Miike. But the one movie that ushered the new wave of modern Samurai movies is the Rurouni Kenshin movies directed by Otomo. Another good samurai series by Otomo is Ryōmaden. Takashi Miike has also a few well-received movies (remakes and new material) like Blade of the Immortal, 13 Assasins and Hara-kiri. Samurai Marathon directed by Bernard Rose was released in 2019.

If Star Wars sequels failed it was because they didn't follow the way of Bushido.

Only Zatoichi isn't a samurai film as I pointed it out earlier, neither is Ichi a samurai.
@randoms571

@@42kellys yes ichi is not a samurai and not all zatoichi movies can be considered as samurai film, but there are many samurai major supporting character in his many movies that has a back story and influence on that story .

I wonder why no one is making samurai films anymore in Japan. You'd expect them to be just as popular as say anything else they're getting out.
