When I watched this episode, I thought about Nikki, & how she'd... dislike the baby part, but by the ending, I thought the episode was so beautifully written that I figured Nikki would appreciate the story, more than a short sad, yet beautiful, scene. I think I was right. Either way, this was an incredible episode! 🤘😁

As for the style of the show, I believe they're doing every episode as one comic... (You guys do know this is based on a comic book, right?!) I own, & have read, several of the comics, & they're alot like an anthology, so thinking it's like the 'Twilight Zone,' is pretty on point! Though, just like the show, there is a small thread of a bigger story, but it's very much of 'slow burn.' I don't think this show has a season 2, yet, but hopefully enogh people will tweet at Netflix, until they get another season! Lol. 🤘😁

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention something ... I mentioned that the episodes are based on the comics, (graphic novels,) but it's the imagination, & writing of NEIL GAIMAN that brings these stories, & the amazing characters to life! AND... If you're interested, there's an independent film, released in 2017, called... "Sandman: 24 Hour Diner." (* I copied the title from imdb, but I didn't expect the font! Lol...) Anyway, the movie has some great reviews, & though it was a 'fan film,' & Neil Gaiman wasn't involved, it seems to be a really good flick! Even Gaiman watched it, & thought it great. The reason I mention this film, is because the story in the movie is right out of a graphic novel, & it's also the same story from the show...& it's episode 5! A couple things are different, like the person with the 'ruby' is a Doctor from Arkham Asylum!! 🤯 (That threw me for a second, lol.) I haven't seen the film myself, but I accidentally clicked on a link, & I got a RU-vid video with the whole movie! The article I read did say that the movie's makers had a premier in Toronto, then they released the movie online for free! So, I think I've typed enough nonsense for tonight. I hope these comments were slighly helpful. Maybe you guys could watch the film on your 'movie night' sometime. Or maybe just put it on in the background, just to check it out...I'm gonna check it out later...If you like, I could let you know how you'd feel about it, as I've been watching things with you two for years now, & I'm pretty sure I know your taste for stories, lol... (Sorry, that sounded a bit stalkery.) But if I gave you a review for this movie, I promise it won't be as long as this comment!! Ok, I'm out...catch ya next vid! 🤘😁🤪🪓 Looking forward to the next episode of TLK, shit's gonna get crazy this season!!!

it WOULD be a trip to be able to say "i haven't heard that for 200 years." BUT, it would be an EVEN BIGGER TRIP to BE ABLE TO REMEMBER something from that long ago, since most people struggle to remember 30 or 40 years back. Imagine, you hear a song.....maybe even like the song.....like the pop 80's or pop 90's one hit wonders.......how many can you name? And for Dream to be able to simply say, "i haven't heard that for 200 years." REMEMBERING it immediately, AND how long ago it was that he last heard it.......THAT would be cool

Really, the only way I think it could've been better is if Christina Ricci had portrayed Death. Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death absolutely did a fantastic job! We have seen death portrayed in media as either a comedic act, or a serious one that will just obliterate you if you so much as look at Death the wrong way. This show attempts at something that in my opinion has never ever been done before on the many portrayals of of Death and that is: Portraying Death in a kind and guiding light to the souls who passed on. And they absolutely did a great job with this idea without making cartoony or campy.

Sort of makes sense how Death could be misinterpreted as the skeletal figure when described by a very bewildered person who met her, but lived. “So, what’s death like?” “Um, seems to smile a lot.” “Oh, like a skull.” “Sure, whatever. I’m just happy to be alive.”

It's actually been done in different benign ways many times over the years. Some intimidating but non malicious versions (comedically as you have said) are DEATH from Terry Pratchetts Discworld series (and the companion deaths like The Death of Rats). Or the version of The Seventh Seal, game-playing death in Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey. But there is the chilled, friendly John Denver-type ANGEL of death in Touched by an Angel. Desire is canonicly more or less genderless or what we call today non-binary. Dream in the Comics often refers to them as their Sister-Brother. Depending on who looks at Desire they appear more masculin or feminin( A heterosexual guy for example will perceive Desire often as a beautiful woman). So they clearly made the perfect casting choice having an identifiying non-binary actor/ess playing Desire and then Steven perceiving them as "she" :D

The Sound of Her Wings (the first part of the episode) and Men of Good Fortune (the Hob Gadling part) are two of the most popular issues from the original comic run, and they're probably my two favorite issues of the entire series. In the Hob story, you get to see that pre-imprisonment Dream was colder, more aloof, and actually much more amoral than post-imprisonment, although he was obviously never a fan of slavery. Everything is so consistent because they've been VERY careful in retelling the storylines from the comics run. Episodes 1-5 were Preludes and Nocturnes, and which was probably the weakest part of the comic. (Which makes sense, since it was the very first seven issues.) Episodes 7-10 are from the next story, The Doll's House. By episode 11, we'll also have covered most of Dream Country. If there's a Season 2, I expect we'll get at least one of the remaining Dream Country episodes (it was just 4 unconnected short stories, but one we haven't seen yet is VITAL for the overall story arch), plus a rather introspective, storybuilding story line (Season of Mists), and a very...odd...one (A Game of You).

In the beginning, Death carried the persona we're all familiar with. Cloaked, hooded skeletal wielding a scythe. Scary. And Death grew depressed by her function, and considered quitting. Until coming across a little girl who pondered to death the problem was death did not understand what dying felt like. Now, once a century, for one day, Death gives herself a mortal life. And that's when death took on the peppy goth chick persona we all know and love. The Endless are seriously fascinating when you hit up Google and start to explore them all. Dying for Season 2.

In the comic, the baby talked. He just said "that's all I get?" and Death says "I'm afraid so". This is honestly one of the best episodes of tv of all time. The whole episode could’ve been just about Dream traveling and talking with Death while she is guiding souls to the afterlife. I mean first the scene with her guiding the old man, letting him say the Shema prayer made me tear up right away, and I’m not even Jewish. But then they show us the story of Hob Gadling and I could NOT take my eyes off the screen for a second. Also in the comic she is white and pale, but I love that they cast a black woman and that it was Kirby Howell-Babtiste, her version of death is so warm and kind and caring. I’ve been on the side that thinks immortality for mortals is a curse, that over time your moral compass would break, you would look at other mortals as just insects, and your own sense of humanity (your soul, spirit, chi, ka, whatever you want to call it) would crumble away into dust. But Hob Gadling is a truly exceptional man for living as long as he had and not become either a power hungry psychopath or just an outright piece of crap. Yes he veered off the path and was involved briefly in the slave trade, but Morpheus managed to show him the error of his ways. Hob is the embodiment of looking at the bright side! And Hob had an effect on Morpheus because after spending so much time with Hob he actually did come to care for him. And in the end Dream finally admitted that he and Hob were friends. Also apparently Neil Gaiman said that in the end of the episode Hob is actually grading papers because he is now a history teacher. Which is both perfect and hilarious when you think about it.

The part with the baby with SIDS was so heartbreaking! This was probably my favorite episode. Loved your reviews and your takes on this!

My favorite episode of the season! Kirby Howell Baptiste is a wonderful Death, I love that she wears an ankh, I love her compassion and commitment to her duty and to humanity. I love the story of the man who lives forever and never loses his will to live despite his hardships. I love how Dream grows and as Nikki said humbles himself by growing closer to people and understanding his purpose in relation to them. One of the most memorable episodes and has interesting concepts.

Hearing her chew out Dream and then later say "Do you know who I am"...that really sold me on Kirby. She exudes the same kindness and compassion and care that the comic shows Death to have. I cry every time I watch this episode.

Death is the one true reaper to whom all death gods must bow. Like Dream, she has her own realm, although it's never given an explicit name. It is, however, sometimes referred to in passing as "the Light at the End of the Tunnel." Since people are dying constantly everywhere, she is nearly omnipresent on Earth at all times. Death's powers allow her to see spirits on Earth, and in fact, she can leave certain souls in the plane to wander as ghosts. She loves her job and does it very well and is perhaps the most well-adjusted of the Endless family.

The Sound of her Wings was the point in the comic series where many thought Neil had hit his stride and found his voice with the comic book. It ends the collected volume Preludes & Nocturnes and you'd be amazed how much of this show just lifts dialogue straight from the comic because it just works. The nice thing I noticed in this is the scene with the baby, in the comic the baby asks "is this all I get" and they thankfully dropped the baby talking and you just heard Death's replies. For TV IU think that worked better.

I would call this episode a bridge because (more trivia) the story with Death is reprinted in both trade paperbacks for "Preludes and Noturnes" and "The Doll's House" and Hobbs story is in middle "The Doll's House" . Neither is really central to the arcs that surround them but I enjoy them both greatly.

I think, for a lot of fans of the original material it was a real bummer that this series didn't seem to make a splash the way some shows do, especially because it was such an amazing adaptation. However seeing through the eyes of people who are new to it all, and seeing that it was just as powerful and moving as long time fans always felt it was, has been a really great experience. When it comes to Hob, Dream just wants to see *what* Hob does, rather than expecting something in particular or notable. Shakespeare caught Dream’s attention because storytelling is very much his line of business, as it were (and in the comics there’s a whole subplot there!). Short hair *is* awesome, and…soo is Mason Alexander Park as Desire. They’re bloody brilliant.

This episode had two separate stories form the comic, but they match up beautifully here. The way that Death is here, is a bit like the Reapers in the show "Dead Like Me", which is very entertaining and bewildering as this first half was. The second half is pretty fun and interesting to see how humans still can find meaning to keep going on even when the chips are down. Great job holding back those tears, Nikki! I do like Desire's look as well. In the comics, since it was in the 1980's Desire looked like Patrick Nagel's style of drawing. You would recognize his art from Duran Duran's album cover RIO, and he often did illustrations for Playboy. When you see his art, you immediately think of the 1980's.

The thing about Hob, when he's at his lowest point, is that he knows things will get better. He's seen life at its best, and at its worst, and knows that it will eventually turn around again. As someone with bipolar, I can actually really relate to that. There's times when it takes all my effort just to force myself out of bed in the morning, and the one thing I have to hold on to is that I know that I just need to ride it out, and eventually it will all start to look up. That said, Hob got a bit of a cheat -- not only does he not die, but he doesn't age. Who wouldn't want to live forever in the prime of their life? Look up the myth of Tithonus for someone who wasn't so lucky. Hell, I've only just entered the back end of my 40's and I'm already not as spry as I used to be.

I'll put the chairs on the tables, turn out the lights and lock the universe behind me when I leave" and I love that they took that from the comics and put it in the show. Just a neat FYI that you may have missed: Steven mentioned that the business owner probably put up the sign for The New Inn. But it was Hob who opened up the place, calling it "The New Inn" as a specific direction to Dream. And he's there every day, running his business but also just in case his old friend finally shows up. That's why they were able to meet again in the present on this random day, instead of on the appointed day in each century. I like to think now that Hob has the pub, Dream makes the time to stop in there more often than every 100 years :) Also, just LOVING y'alls reactions on this! So happy you are so into it, and really enjoying your takes and observations. Going to be sad when we get to the end of season 1 -- but hopefully, we'll get to watch season 2 together! 😬🤞

I'm in my 50s so the first part really hit home. Statistically I have 25-30yrs left so the spectre of death becomes more significant. I was at my father's bedside when he passed and I was the last person in my family that saw my mother before she died so when Death did her rounds I had to pause the show for a while.
