The Sardine Run is a natural phenomenon that occurs off the shores of Moalboal on Cebu Island in the Philippines.
Massive shoals of sardines hug the coastal drop-off zone just a few metres off the beach, which makes finding and swimming with them really easy.
While this is an incredible occurrence, as with many spectacles that are relatively easy to access, it is unlikely you'll get to experience this natural treasure by yourself. Lots of local boat operators bring scores of tourists to this area and it can become a mess of boats and people very quickly.
We found that heading out to the sardines early in the morning was a good tactic for avoiding the crowds, as well as just before sunset when all the boats were leaving again.
While the shoals are shallow enough to snorkel with, there are also a number of diving operators in the town that can get you up close to the shoal away from the madding crowd.
In all, it's a fantastic experience albeit a little bit much in terms of the crowd, and one we'd recommend you travel for.
