When I was 8 years old my dad went out to a march, without understanding anything about what was written or indeed the content of the book. It was an absolute disgrace back in those days. It is also to be noted that Congress govt ruling India at the time had always been sucking up to minorities including Muslims. So, banning the book made electoral sense. The same PM Rajiv Gandhi who banned the book also sided with Muslim clerics to deny a Muslim widow pittance for her maintenance from her husband after latter divorced her. This came to be known as the "Shah Bano" case and brought eternal shame to Congress. Muslim women have never been able to progress since and are even today fighting a losing battle.

Christianity and Islam have in common. One God. After that, they differ completely. They are not the same God. The reason i am a Christian is because Jesus said plainly. My kingdom is not of this world. Conversely Islam in my opinion grasps the essence of this world or rather embraces the human condition.. Meaning if you don't fall in line with my religion, we will use force and murder to put fear into the world. Often i hear. Oh it's a religion of peace..? How can they get around their sacred book the quaran which implicitly commands rule either by willingness or force. Christianity is quite the opposite. It is against the grain of the flesh , and ego. In a way, it is at first glance a foreign or for lack of a better word, alien.. to human inclinations. The more i live in this world, the more i don't put my treasure here. If i did that. Im surely in trouble. The 7 deadly sins still are alive in this world. I have committed a number of them. After studying the two religions..i choose Jesus Christ because everything adds up and as i said. After being in this world, long enough.. It has nothing i truly want. A religion is basically a constitution. Islam was a constitution that was created for the team of convoy robbers lead by Muhammad. He verbally mentioned each rule according to his own convenience and controlled them all pretty well. He didn't expect Islam to grow that much. However, others who saw advantage in continuing it wrote the Quran a hundred years after his death and wrapped it all around his neck. It worked and now, we have 55 countries struggling with the confused generations of those who had converted to Islam to survive the invasions.
Sounds like a tasteless book conceptually, perhaps well written. As one of his friends said, he was deliberately causing mischief. So the contention that Rushdi makes of religious leaders capitalising on sentiments of the people is guilty of exactly the same thing. Perhaps he wants to be a religious leader himself.
