UK TV documentary about the sometimes scandalous history of one of the world's most influential grand hotels. Presented by Dr Matthew Sweet. From 2004.
Had beautiful memories of the Savoy hotel stayed there a few times. You forgot to mention the most important fact; it has the only right lane drive in the whole United Kingdom what I thought was unique.
I worked at the Savoy from 1976 til 1979 most at the time at the Savoy Grill, it was a fantastic hotel at the time and the service delivery was out of this world. The Savoy Hotel London gave me the edge that opened many door world wide! Thanks Savoy Hotel ad Friends
I know a guy who makes retrofitted appliances a my God there is a reason why the stuff is awesome not only did it last long if you took care of it but the Styles we're honestly phenomenal not that I don't appreciate some of the more Sleek modern looks and he's able to combine that but there's something about the older fashion that has so much charm to it and because he's been able to work on these models using future technology he made them a lot more efficient because unfortunately some of these things had problems but it almost seems more rare in comparison to what we have to deal with a lot more simplistic depending on the appliance the same guy has a cousin who works on antique model cars and planes so in many ways it's a family business
Visited the Savoy last month: sumptuous, a bubble isolated from the real world. One curious observation, though: Adjacent to the elegant entrance to the exquisite WCs is a grand portrait of our late Queen. Why there? Is it a subtle joke, linking one throne with another, perhaps?
“Film stars, celebrity chefs, fraudsters, murderers, sex criminals” were the last three really necessary? I feel like they’re kinda implied in the first two items on the list. Heck, they probably could’ve just left it at “celebrities” and we would’ve filled in the blanks.
You'd think they would get top hats that didn't look like they were pulled out of an old trunk - what a bad first impression - that doorman's top hat was in horrible condition.
my late mother would say that in the most expensive hotels the chefs and cooks do NOT wear gloves on their hands and they are touching food-even decades before the COVID- isn't that unsanitary?
Washing hands is necessary, but not enough (test w/ blk light). Gloves are great if you frequently change them (eg. don't open the refer door, etc. without changing). Tongs, tweezers, etc. are good.
Why did Mariah Carey leave this hotel after arriving? Is this a racist hotel? I am Black my husband and I, and we want to come to London next Christmas, and I want to be treated well.
Best you stay in the US with that pathetic attention seeking attitude. Your colour had nothing to do with any of this. But you sure brought your dumb racist me me me BS into it!. Stay in the US as your attitude isn't welcome in the UK.
This is supposed to be a look into the history of the Savoy and there is no mention of Cesar Ritz ? Along with chef Auguste Escofier, these two friends made the Savoy world renowned and yet this fool ( Dr Mathew Sweet ) does not mention Ritz ? He also doesn't mention that both men were fired from the Savoy for embezzlement? In typical British snobbery and bigotry, Dr Sweet complains that the Savoy's new owners, mainly the major shareholder being a Saudi prince, are the reason that the Savoy is too far removed from what it once was and is now a lesser hotel. This is a piss poor history lesson.
He did mention Auguste Escofier and that he was fired for embezzlement but that it didn't come out unitl later that that was the reason, and you are right...how can he not metion Ritz.
