I can’t believe, as a lover of old films and black and white particularly, that I have never seen this film. I enjoyed it very much, so thanks for the upload. Alec Guinness loved portraying many characters in the same film. Check out Kind Hearts and Coronets to see him playing many more characters, in the same film.
Wow...I got sucked into the story quicker than I expected and thoroughly enjoyed every second! Thanks for the fantastic upload...very much appreciated!
On one hand a completely ridiculous plot, where Barratt is such identical double that no one suspects him. And even when DeGue's lover finds out, she is not outraged and instead accepts him. On the other hand, it is Alec Guiness, so it all works.
thanks for posting this. good story but too many loose ends. i haven't read the novel. so, i must ask does the novel leave this many loose ends? what? director and scriptwriter ran out of time to resolve stuff? will have to make a run to the library now... thanks again for posting!
I thought fingerprints were being used by this time. but that would have required the fingerprints of both of them to be on file. Nonetheless, a wonderful movie.
The ending is incomplete and not like another film version released in 2012 with Matthew Rhys playing the two look alikes, in which he kills the real Jacques and puts his body in the furnace. But this version Alec Guinness is the better actor.
The better actor, but too much fidelity to the book was a downfall. They could have been twins, but there's no way an English French teacher could have passed for a French aristocrat once he opened his mouth. And the book's ending has him enter a religious retreat. I'll stick with the perfect adult fairy tale of 2012. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xN-DcksJ-SA.htmlsi=HOct6vWfPaR14BKL
Ravishingly beautiful score uplifts a very interesting movie. Realistic, almost understated performances from Mr. Guinness ground the dream logic of the plot. As someone noted, almost a fairy tale... happy ending and all. Charming. And Miss Davis makes a great nutjob!
Good movie. I didn't think they good pull off the plot of the 2 guys who look alike exchanging places but they did a fair job of it. SPOILER ALERT What did the guy do with the body at the end? I was hoping the police would bust thru the door at the end. I liked my ending better.
I've been doing a jigsaw puzzle in another tab while listening to this movie. The story, dialogue, and the way the characters deliver it is just as entertaining without the visual.
Anyone would think that the poor man hadn't had an entire lifetime as a famous & much loved, acclaimed actor before he sold out to some Hollywood blockbuster 🤷
@@LuciThomasHardylover-qx6ts I know, I love Sir Alec’s career, it was just where my mind went when he first talked in the movie. No disrespect intended.
@@LuciThomasHardylover-qx6tsI don't think he 'sold out' at all. Star Wars is an excellent film and nobody knew at the time what blockbusters the films would be. Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and other fine actors have also been in the films- they're not selling out, just doing what actors do...acting.
This was the second time I saw this movie and I enjoyed it as much as the first time. Seeing Alec Guinness in two roles is a precious privilege for the audience. Thank you very much.
The plot is ludicrous: either all French people really speak English, or this Englishman’s French is so perfect that nobody can tell him from a native-born Frenchman?
It is a movie, suspend your belief system and enjoy. Would you like the English speaking folk speaking English and the French, French,? Perhaps with a local dialect, with subtitles to "classic" French? Then sub-sub titles to English?
. The story is absolute tripe and the acting is worthy of Robert Newton's.... Long John Silver...... well overacted😂😂. Bet Davies English accent sounds more like a speech impediment....
"On a vacation in France from his nondescript job and life, John Barratt encounters a titled but impoverished French nobleman who looks exactly like him. The nobleman gets John drunk, and switches places with him to take a breather from his failing business and too-complicated life. John tries to convince everyone he is not who they think he is, but he begins to get more and more involved with the count's family, including an unhappy wife, domineering mother, lonely but talented young daughter, bitter spinster sister and the expected mistress. As John gets to know them he feels he can help them with their problems, but is also becoming used to his borrowed life, which has given him a purpose for the first time."
Try looking it up yourself - you could have done that in the same time it took you to insult the person who took the time and effort to put the film up here for you.
