The Scariest Hike in Sequoia NP: Alta Peak to Pear Lake Traverse

The Alta Peak and Pear Lake hikes are two of the most iconic and best hikes in Sequoia National Park. However, both of these hikes are usually done on their own as single day hikes. After some sleuthing, we realized you can actually connect the Alta Peak hike to Pear Lake by traversing along the ridgeline from Alta Peak and then downclimbing (with a class 2 / class 3 climb and scramble) all the way to Pear Lake, in essence making one absolutely epic hike that we definitely feel is the scariest hike in Sequoia National Park that we have found to date! Not to mention, looping Alta to Pear allows you to descend back to Lodgepole by taking the Watchtower route, which gives you sweeping panoramic views of Sequoia and the surrounding mountains. And of course, Adam couldn't resist himself and HAD to actually run out onto the Watchtower itself (please don't try this at home)!
#sequoianationalpark #hiking #nationalparks
Disclaimer: The Alta Peak to Pear Lake traverse is rarely done for a reason - there have been several reports of deaths on this route, and for that reason we do not recommend doing this route. As always, climb at your own risk :)

I think I might be your oldest fan. I’m an 88 year old grandma who somehow came upon your channel and now I am hooked. You two are incredible in what you can do. My only hiking was back in Yosemite when I camped with my parents way back in the late forties (. a long time ago!). I love how you film and the music is great. Thanks for taking me along on your amazing adventures. Please stay safe.

Yeah, I'm an old (77) mountain man myself - worked & lived in Yosemite, Truckee, Near Mt. Shasta and Lassen National Park. Loved the type of hike you just did where you try and find your way up or down a mountain where there's no trails. I did a few in Lassen. Not having a time restraint, some times I'd run into an unpassable dead end and then return the next week to try a different track. I go back to Yosemite, in my old age, and can't believe some of the granite I scrambled up on in my younger days. I enjoy how blessed you feel about the setting, the workout & the challenge, and the wilderness beauty you're surrounded by - beautifully shot and well done - enjoyed your journey! Oh, been around a lot of black bears too, and never a problem, but the element of wild unpredictability, near a powerful animal, brings on the adrenalin rush and the hope that you won't have to go into some kind of wild antics to survive the situation! '

@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 3 года назад
Thanks so much! Love how you describe the granite like a puzzle, because it truly is that. You can't just blaze your way through and hope that everything comes together. You've got to stop, think, and if the puzzle piece doesn't fit, re-assess. The Sierras are probably our favorite place in the world (that we know so far) and we're sure you've got loads of wisdom about this area. What was your favorite climb? We only hope to be doing this for decades to come! 😊

When I watch these things in 4k, and you humor us with your kindly responses and good editing, I am happy. Its consistent and good, I used to be anti on camera, but you guys have a good balance, more importantly as you grow, gear up, get out there, you are not arrogant or preachy, you march on making it better. Faster, Further, Higher, more technical, better gear, better conditioning, I initially cringed at the running, but only because I have seen so many bite the dust trotting along in the wild, log to the da nuts, or off the log and stabbed by branch, or down in log jam crossing water, or on da face over wet or icy rocks, lol. Which you may have experienced. Nobody wears a helmet rock hopping, it ain't cool, pain in the ass, but hey we all know what happens when you bite it in boulders. So even though people read this and say there is that guy again. Me. Take a page from the Army, who proudly killed over 640 soldiers a year in accidents before making us wear the dome of obedience, and going safe, the Kpot. Risk assessment, aka DO the Google Earth recon, map recon, weather recon, RU-vid recon, gear check, we all do it kinda naturally, and when 99 percent of the time you go, come back, and say what, that was easy. Donner Pass is a 7,056-foot-high mountain pass in the northern Sierra Nevada, above Donner Lake and Donner Memorial State Park about 9 miles west of Truckee, California. Like the Sierra Nevada mountains themselves, the pass has a steep approach from the east and a gradual approach from the west.Wikipedia It, Donner, is basically a joke to me 7056 feet! On the west side. Even in 12 feet of snow. Why?? Because I am good, been out there, am that guy. I take it for granted. I think I am better than 7056 feet. Hell I am. I am better than Taboose Pass, lol. Now Taboose would have been tough if I had to crawl down, instead of hobble. Fo Sure. ALONE. 9.5 mile crawl. I Did all the big ones alone it was fun. However, these two look like they are having way more fun than I did.

Great way to make a loop out of two features. Watchtower looks amazing. I also enjoyed your bear run-in since I had a very similar one in Yosemite earlier in the month. While getting water out of Yosemite creek about 1/4 mile above the falls, I turned around and there was a beautiful brown colored Black Bear. I was alone, and there were some low shrubs that prevented both of us from seeing each other. We surprised each other about 15 feet apart, I yelled and it startled him (he kind of jumped and jiggled and ran the other way.) I was really scared for a few seconds, and then I got to enjoy watching him run away. When he was at a safe distance, I called out to him (hey Bear), and he looked right at me for a great camera shot. The entire Sierra range is so amazing. Please keep sharing!

Great job being careful to think through the safest routes and being willing to change course as needed. Mountain trails can be tricky and suddenly dangerous. Many injuries or worse occur when hikers don't pause and think through their steps and routes. As you noted, simple things like loose gravel can ruin your day quickly or worse. You can live on the edge, so to speak, but without taking excessive risks. Great video and experience!

@@LiveHardxLoveHard exactly; icy spots are easy to miss and can take a hiker down fast and hard. Just walking in a shaded area on a warming day can make one careless and not aware that what looks like water is still an iced-over patch.

I can't even breathe! First you jog my memory with your Catalina Journey. Now then. Let's turn the calendar back to 1966 in August. I was 13 and 1/2 years old, attending Camp Wolverton with my boy scout troop. We spent four days in the back country hiking to Emerald Lake. That hike was absolutely miserable for me. First of all most of us had these crummy frame pack setups. Back then the rich kids had Kelty Packs with Eddie Bauer sleeping bags! Anyhow, picture this if you can… the altitude, the uphill, the heat, dying of thirst, I was in tears during the ascent toward Emerald Lake. Once we got to the Watchtower, the trail leveled out. Once we got to Emerald Lake, I thought I died and went to heaven. Here was the Crux… for someone who couldn't handle the hike, how would I work this? The answer came a couple of years later, my random choice to go out for cross country when I started High School. I definitely admired Alta Peak from our campsite at the lake. I did scramble up to the eastern col, so I could gaze down on Pearl Lake. That fateful summer camp was my gateway drug to the Sierra. Your traverse definitely puts you into “time traveler” status! Everything is everything, man!

Thanks so much! And yesss this is such a great climb! Just make sure if you do the traverse that you don’t try to drop straight down from Alta to pear, and instead go along the right side of the lake. We did end up finding some beta and it turns out the straight line would take you into some very dicey class 5 terrain. So, totally unnecessary, unless you’re a climber 😊

@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 года назад
Not quite sure what your point here is, Scott. The traverse down from Alta to Pear is very difficult, and multiple people have died attempting it including most recently in 2017. We talked to a Sequoia ranger who said it is the area where they have to do by far the most rescues. After doing it ourselves, we can see how someone who knew the exact route to take would be able to ski it. We could also see how people doing it for the first time could easily get injured or die, either skiing or hiking. Are you trying to minimize the potential danger of this route where people have died? And if so, why in the world would you do that?
@wernerevans4068

So vertical represents insufficient danger. Only super vertical rock formation fills the danger aspect. You never fail to impress and provide outstanding scenery.
