Summary of The Scarlet Letter. The Scarlet Letter A Romance was published in 1850. It is one of the most talked-about novels of Dark Romanticism and it is considered the best work of Nathaniel Hawthorne. We have seen his brilliance in Rappaccini's Daughter, The Story of David Swan, and his other stories that were compiled in Twice Told Tales Now let us discuss the summary of The Scarlet Letter.
The protagonist of the scarlet letter is Hester Prynne while the antagonist is Roger Chillingworth, who is her husband. The other major character is Arthur Dimmesdale, the illicit lover of Hester with whom she has a child named Pearl. The story is based on themes of Sin, Guilt, Humiliation, and Legalism. Chillingworth is sick of his desire to take revenge against the man who won the love of his wife.
Arthur Dimmesdale as the name suggests is a dim character, unsure of his own desires, lacking the courage to accept his relationship with Hester and his daughter Pearl.
The daughter Pearl, symbolizes the torment and the punishment such sinful acts may accrue.
The novel is full of Puritan religious allusions. Hester Prynne alludes Virgin Mary as she is beautiful and confident and courageous. And she is a woman who has a child outside the wedlock. Also, Arthur Dimmsdale and Hester allude to Adam and Eve as Hester suffers ostracization.
