@@LB-gz3ke Braden is the name of the family that the show is based on as it says in the opening credits. The name in the show is Bradford based on the real life Braden family.
@@roryotoole3279Later in the video at 4:55 the narrator is talking about the series, not the book. He refers to them as the Braden kids. Yes, it was based on the book but this part is about the series only. This narrator is sloppy. He also mentions that Mary Frann was played by Bob Newhart 4:08 lol. Mary Frann was on the series Newhart.
@@LB-gz3ke yeah I really hate Facts Verse and avoid watching them if I can help it. I had forgotten about the Mary Frank/Dick Van Patten thing. That was pretty funny.
This dude is “loose” with the facts 1/2 the time they are wrong and most of the time his headings have nothing to do with his videos. These vids are junk most of the time.
@Justin Jones. I disagree. I find these videos very interesting and they appear factual to me. I love this channel and the information contained. Brings back a lot of great TV/entertainment memories. Thank you for your opinion. May the Lord Bless you! 😎✝️❤️
i just saw on the news that the actor that played Nicholas, Adam Rich, has passed away at age 54. I decided to watch an episode, for mostalgic purposes, in honor of him. I watched the hilariously spooky "Horror Story", which is season 3, episode 19. It's the episode where the power goes out at the Bradford house during a rainstorm. It has some creepy, funny scenes. One of the best episodes i sorta remembered as a child. Nancy's blind date shows up at the Bradford house and he resembles Norman Bates of Psycho. RIP Adam Rich. 💔😢🙏
@@montananerd8244 sadly, the coroner released his cause of death a few days ago. that demonic drug called FENTANYL killed him. Or he killed himself by using the drug. He did so many drugs after Eight Is Enough ended. He ended up dying from one of the most deadly drugs of all. May he RIP.
i JUST got done watching the hilariously spooky episode, "Horror Story", when a rainstorm causes the power to go out at the Bradford house. It's a good one!! I haven't seen it since maybe 1980. I heard today the sad news report of the death of Adam Rich. Nicholas is gone. 😢🙏💔
Every video about why a show was canceled they post has the title "The Scene That Took (name of show) for Good". There was never any scene in any of them. It was because of ratings or something else that they were canceled.
Watched this show pretty regularly during its run. One thing that cracked me up was that they had an episode during the series about Tom Bradford turning 50 and how he was coping with it. Forward to one of the reunion movies and guess what? They were celebrating his 50th birthday again!! I guess that meant he and Joan had David when he was about 19! Haha!
As mentioned at 4:04, Bob Newhart's portrayal of Mary Frann as Abby Bradford in the 1987 TV movie "Eight Is Enough: A Family Reunion" was brilliant. Bob's interactions with TV hubby Tom absolutely sparkled, and Dick Van Patten was a much better foil for Newhart's dry comedy style than Suzanne Pleshette ever was. Plus Newhart rocked Mary Frann's sweaters like nobody's business!
*No* scene took Eight Is Enough off the air. No scene took The Brady Bunch off the air. No scene took Bewitched off the air. All these shows just ran their course and were eventually cancelled and replaced with new series'. The only people who really believe that shows were cancelled because of a scene are kids who subscribe to all the cancel culture crap and believe all that 'cancel' nonsense went on back in the 1970s and 1980s.
I was hoping somebody would mention when the Mr Bradford and Nicholas went to the YMCA to teach Nicholas how to swim. The dad insisted they do it in the nude because trunks would "slow you down" so they went, unbeknownst to themselves, into the pool naked in the middle of co-ed swimming. Was really surprised to find out nude male swimming was even mandated in schools as well as something that happened at the YMCA until about 1975.
I am the same age as Nicholas would be, and I remember watching the show as a kid. I have recently started watching the series again on TUBI. TV sure has changed since the 70s and 80s. I miss everything about those times, especially the movies and TV shows, not to mention the music. I wish we could go back.
IDC what ppl say us baby boomers had the best most organic television music & the best cars a sense of self & family sadly divorce didn't get better I loved this show good TV!
I loved this show when I was younger Tommy & Adam was my favorites & Susan too I miss these old shows we had good TV shows when growing up. I liked all of these actors/ actress in this show. Was a great family show
We're happy to know that you love the show. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for sharing your favorite cast members. If we may ask, which episode did you like the best?
The lady that plays the first mom was John Travolta's girlfriend and she died after being in four episodes then Betty Buckley took over the role as the new mother.Years later she would be on Broadway in CATS singing one of my favorite songs Memory
@@lisaroster5855 the tv show was based on the life of a syndicated newspaper columnist named Tom Braden, who had eight children. He had written a book called, eight is enough. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Dick Van Patten was the first Doc on the Love Boat movie. He was so dry in that character. He thrived on this show! It’s hard to find this show on steaming and on cable. I loved this show!’ It ended 40 years ago not 30 as you stated.
Favorite scene? That's a no-brainer. When they discover that the mom who had passed away bought a Christmas present for Tommy and hid it in the cabinet. There was not a dry eye in the house when he opened it.
Susan Richardson was pregnant in real life and the original idea on the show was to have her have the baby as a single mom on the show and the Bradfords would help raise the baby as a family, but they thought this would ruin the family feel of the show and how it taught good principles, so they had Susan get married before her character got pregnant.
This GREAT dramedy had an episode where Tommy was running for home coming QUEEN, yes QUEEN!! This dramedy really was the most progressive TV-show of its day!! The pilot featured Mark Hamill as David Bradford, I promise you!! I have often wondered what ever became of Mark Hamill!!🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂Also . . . . Ralph Macchio was the "COUSIN OLIVER" of this wonderful, wonderful dramedy!! Thanks a lot Karate Kid!!👺👺👺👺👺👺👺👺👺👺👺👺👺👺👺👺👺👺👺👺
I remember the show always being on in the house. After learning that Adam Rich passed, I started binge watching episodes on Tubi for nostalgia. It's probably good that it ended when it did and didn't drag on. So many others were ruined for that. Think 'Happy Days'.
My favorite moment from Eight Is Enough was when Nicholas and his friend told the girl off at the Lemonade Stand saying "Tracy go suck a lemon. Then Nicholas said to his friend "We didn't get rich but we got even."
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔Are you sure that Mr. BOB NEWHART played Ms. Mary Frann on the Eight is Enough NBC film??? 4:11 4:11 🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂
I think 8 is enough was a really good show and never should really have been canceled I think it could have gone on to Greater Heights with greater story lines the problem with TV today is that nobody knows how to advance a show to the next level nobody knows how to write to the next level there are a lot of great family shows that we could be watching together as a family like we used to do way back when when Aaron Spelling came out with so many good shows like family ties and Beverly Hills 90210 and The Love Boat you know shows that you could sit around the TV and talk about and have discussion about anyways those are my thoughts
I don't think there was ever a series in TV history that ended with more unanswered questions than Eight Is Enough. The show was just starting to get racy and interesting and dare I say--more "soap opera" like in the last two seasons. Before, it was more like the Brady Bunch, except that problems didn't get solved in 30 minutes--they got solved in an hour--maybe two---if it had a part two. But they dealt with issues and topics that the Bradys never even considered. And again---the unanswered questions: Tommy's music career? David's divorce? Just like that--it was all over
If they had dropped the laugh track and made it a little edgier they could have kept it on the air. A similar show, Aaron Spelling's "Family"; was a similar show, but much much better.
4:04 It only looked like Mary Fran replacing Betty Buckley... But it was Bob Newhart in a Mary Frann mask and whole body costume created by a very early version of AI....
I will say they integrated Diana Hyland's death and Betty Buckley's replacement very well on this show. (Other shows like Bewitched faced the same dilemma and handled it clumsily...)
The thing that took the show off the air was the flagging ratings. An hour long sitcom with a laugh track was kind of a dinosaur by the time the 80s rolled around. (Love Boat still did it but they were the only ones). Also drug addiction plagued this young cast, sadly.
It would have been much easier to understand which actor you were referencing if you would have shown a picture of them, rather than just random scenes from the show. I met one of them once, over thirty years ago, and it would have been nice to verify which one it was so I could comment about the meeting.
I was born in 71 liked the show from what I can remember but I hadn't even started kindergarten yet and then I got hit by a car at the end of kindergarten in June 1978 so it was a blur didn't realize the first mom died in real life didn't know she was with John Travolta either was way too young to understand any of that I do remember Luke Skywalker though and Grant Goodeve replaced him also remember that show Family back then I liked that one too
This video entitled "the scene that took 8 is enough of the air for good" has no mention of such a scene. Also, you don't need to tell us three times that Van Patten found out about cancellation through a newspaper. One time will suffice. And work on matching video with text.
I liked hearing the history of the show, but the title makes it sound like there was some scandalous or controversial ending to the show. It doesn’t sound like there was. And the video doesn’t mention a scene that took the show off the air like the title says.
I’m a Gen Xer who is watching this for the first time as an adult (for free on Tubi for those interested) and I can’t believe how much the show ‘7th Heaven ‘ copied so many of the storylines and tropes from ‘Eight Is Enough.’ I expected Aaron Spelling to be the producer of 8 is enough too. Even weirder were the couple of episodes where Jessica Biel’s character dated a much older character played by Grant Goodeve. Biel is 42 and Goodeve is 71!
Good question ⁉️ there are so many I could fill out this page but I will give you four: Batman Bewitched Beverly Hillbillies Benson..... the four B's and two for the road: Addams Family and Munsters
I watched this show from episode 1 till its final episode i really loved it was dissapointed when it went off the air i dont watch alot of shows at todays level to me most are boring but eight is enough i actually loved it when it went off i felt like this😢 i watch the reruns to this day i still enjoy them ❤
I remember this show vaguely....had crush on Nancy, played by Diane Kay... remembered her from Spielberg WWII comedy 1941 with John Belushi. Diane Kay. Cheryl Ladd from Charlie's Angels, Jenilee Harrison from Three's Company and Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman, Olivia Newton-John ...the 70's-early '80's ...life seemed more simple then.
Fun fact: Dallas, the Waltons, and Eight were all from the same family of Lorimar programs. Dick Van Patten was even a fan of the Waltons. In fact, on one of the EIE episodes, Tom Bradford is sitting down to watch TV and the familiar theme music of the Waltons was coming on!
@@lCdGarcia I know. There was even an episode of Eight is Enough where they all did that at the Bradford "hotel" at the end---a nod to their sister show!
My favorite episode was where the family patriarch lost his job and had to sell his 2 youngest children into slavery just to make ends meet. It was a real tear jerker, but the acting was top notch.
I was only two years old when Eight is enough aired ....so obviously I only remember the early 80's and final season, about the characters...I remembered Tom Bradford and Nicholas ...so when I watched on the news that Adam Rich died...I felt really sad and I decided to find the TV serie online...and to be honest I watched the whole seasons cause I loved It since the first minute❤❤ and I think I Will watch It again soon..
the interior was shot on a sound stage. I just commented how it was one of the few houses in TV history where the interior and exterior shots matched. I sometimes wonder if that was deliberately to give the show a more realistic feel.
Eight is Enough was the family sitcom that reminded me of how my dad grew up. He had siblings that stretched out over 20 years, so that the oldest sibling was old enough to be the parent of the youngest sibling, and treated their youngest sibling as such. My dad was the youngest sibling in his family--he was the "surprise" baby that wasn't supposed to happen. Makes me think of how most of America was, pre-"nuclear family"---except this family was in modern times, dealing with modern issues. But there were questions I had about the show. Like how was Tom Bradford able to afford a mortgage on such a large home in a nice neighborhood, with 8 hungry mouths to feed, on a meager part-time salary at a newspaper? I noticed that he drove, what were at the time, relatively old cars that may have been paid for--maybe that helped? Most of those kids (if you want to call them at---the oldest girl looked like she was about 40 playing a 22 year old!) should have gotten part time jobs to help with the family finances. I know in the 1800s when you had families with 14 kids, each kid had assigned duties to help run the family farm. How come none of those kids had jobs?
@@FactsVerse Season 4 was perhaps my favourite season. Season 3 ended on such a sour note for me--with a wimper, whereas Season 4 open with a bang. The writing got better as the series went along. They were always dealing with much more complex topics than the Brady Bunch ever dealt with, but early on, they were still trying to get things wrapped up in 60 minutes, to the Bradys 30 minutes. By seasons 3 and 4, they finally realised that some problems need more than one episode to resolve, so they started doing more two part episodes, and thats when the show began to take on at least some semblance of realism
