Losing such an adroit and fierce advocate in the Senate would be a true loss, so I am torn. I also hate to say this, but he has a bit of a lisp. Running for President is so much theater, I don't know. I think Al Gore's lisp hurt him, besides the inexplicable and idiot choice of running mate - bizarre almost. Hillary's pant-suits were actually a political issue. So, I dunno. He is probably too liberal to attract center-right voters. I'd love to have me as POTUS, but the political reality I see says "no".

OMG! And I say this as someone who grew up in Richmond, Virginia; attended college and took part in protests, there, in the 1970s, and went to medical school, there, as well! I am so shocked and ashamed! Not for myself, but for my hometown of Richmond. I had thought the end of the era of big tobacco would give Richmond a fresh start on many levels, but clearly Richmond's Justice Powell left a legacy that grows like a traitorous cancer on American democracy.

I wish to add a remarkable fact that I'd neglected in my earlier comment: Lewis Powell was obviously so "proud" of his secret memo that he forgot to mention it to his authorized biographer. Not surprisingly, this secret Report, as Senator Whitehouse had said, was never brought to the attention of the Judiciary Committee and, of course, was kept under wraps when the nomination came to the full senate. Remember the nominee Douglass Ginsburg who withdrew his nomination from consideration to SCOTUS because he had smoked a marijuana cigarette in college? Compare this "horrible crime" to Powell's Truly Horrific Secret Report, if you please.
Powell had been a corporate lawyer for big tobacco companies and he championed corporations as being "people" which is how the Citizens United crap came to be once they had Justices on the Court to fall in line.

It's been in effect since 1970s. Powell was against labor unions, workers rights, minimum wage, environmental protections, voting rights, civil rights etc etc anything he deemed as a threat.

I remember Nixon while he was President and my father watched the News often. I saw his speeches, his Press Conferences and the evening News about him. Nixon was a dirtbag. Nominating Powell to the Supreme Court while fully aware of his intentions fits Nixon completely. There has been an effort to clean up Nixon's legacy that began before he Resigned as President but don't believe it. Nixon became the politician that his handler Prescott Bush (father of George, Grandfather of Dubya) knew he would become. Nixon is credited with "founding the EPA" but he merely signed it into Law because Democrats had the Votes necessary to override his Veto.

It might be worth noting that Lewis Powell was asked by Nixon in 1969 to join the Supreme Court, though he declined at that time. He was persuaded two years later to reconsider joining the Court by Nixon's Attorney General John Mitchell. I'm disappointed that I was unaware of these videos until just today. Kudos to Senator Whitehouse.
