MY 3rd year doing this . hooked after healing my L4& L5 herniated disks in the ocean april 2020 16 days!!! I had a feeling it would work. I am an athelete plenty of ice packs for all injurys . I am hooked cold showers daily and ocean plunges as much as possible.
I was thinking the same thing. “Safe and effective” interventions that come out in 2 months are fine but ice plunges that humans have been doing for thousands of years bad
You are absolutely correct! If ain’t pill it ain’t gonna help you that’s what doctors say. Most people can treat their problems with free and natural remedies.
Really love your content, its very concise and comes from an objective stand point. I was curious about this topic but most of the videos i came across were all very biased. Good job 👍
After I experimented with cold water exposure I can tell you there are noticeable benefit's. After the xposure the warming back up period is super relaxing. I really enjoyed the thawing out factor. The body was very relaxed as if I just got full body massage or a 12 minute hot tub exposure.
I mean while it may have its basis, lets remember we used to think sickness was caused by miasma and that flowers could prevent the plague. Just because its been done for centuries does not make it valid.
I just do cooler water after my nice warm shower . I have always done this on my hair to shut down oil glands. Now I do it over my whole I was doing ice cold ,then heard I could turn it up so I did for some reason I stopped ,let's just say ,I just got over Bronchitis over two months sick .I am back to using the cold water method . .......good life 😊
I started sea swimming when Covid shut the pools,we thought we would see how long we could keep going without putting on our wetsuits,we made it through the winter swimming 4times a week for 5-1o minutes coldest temp 6degrees by February my polymyalgia and asthma disappeared and off all my steroids and I wasn’t even thinking about the benefits from a health perspective so please try it,at least finish off your hot shower with a couple of minutes on cold 💪🏼💪🏼👍👍
I’ve been doing it for 3 weeks and topped out at my home DIY at around 50°. Went to a spa that’s got them at 39° and not only did I hardly feel a difference in the temperatures, it doesn’t feel cold enough anymore to me either lol
I swim at the gym in the winter and they never keep a comfortable temp. cuz "its AZ" its always cold and I know its good for skin and anxiety BUT if its really cold then I grt ear and jaw pain to the point that it lasts almost all day. If I go to snowy places I feel like I injured again my neck and 1 shoulder, its lasts for days. I've tried the cold showers when I suffered anxiety but thats it, I just can't pass that point of being comfortable or not getting the pain for days😢
@@WildandFree4 I actually didn't know what that was, I went to check it and did the exercise for the first time and got dizzy but I didn't need to breath like for a little more than a minute and I was like wth? Lol. Thanks for introducing me to it, I'll read more about it.
I just got one and have tried it 5 times so far but each time I’m in there my head feels like it’s about to explode then have a headache the remainder of the day. I’m hydrated, supplement with vitamin D daily and have also tried to quickly submerge my head at the beginning which I know Huberman has suggested to prevent this feeling from happening. None of the above works though! Really hoping someone has advice to prevent this from happening otherwise I need to go back to cold showers.
Metric is much better. America is one of the only countries to use imperial and their version of imperial is different to the old English imperial in some cases. Freezing = 0C = 32F To convert 39 f to C. first minus 32 from 39 = 7. Then multiple 7 by 5/9 = 35/9 = 3.89C. Or search convert f to C in your search engine and get a convertor calculator.
@@eugenemonaghan8943 America does not use imperial it uses the United States Customary System (also known as United States Customary Units) slight difference to the brits, but most noticeable in weight scales, where we do not use stones. And yes it sucks and its all because people got all pro america and stonewalled the conversion. Today there is Public Law 94-168 Dec. 23 1975, which states that there is a voluntary conversion. You can see how well making it voluntary went.
Not brown fat. Beige fat. Brown fat is something we have as children and slowly goes away through time. Beige fat is triggered through cold exposure. As the bodies response moves mitochondria to white fat and discolor it. Mitochondria burn the fat for heat.
The brown fat never completely disappear. You can restore it to its original size. The beige fat is made of white fat cells that mutated into beige cells by creating new mitochondrias.
@@korelly it’s not grown in the fat. It’s a response to cold exposure. When you get goosebumps from the change of temperature the blood rushes to the muscle then when it subsides melts into fat causing a thermogenic reaction for about 4 hours.
Idk, works for me. I’m sure if you live a sedentary lifestyle it doesn’t matter. Definitely speeds up recovery and reduces muscle soreness. Also improved alertness for me. All just my experience, no science. Id say a 50 degree cold shower isn’t the same as an ice bath.. so not sure if turning your shower almost all the way down is the same. Can’t speak on weight loss or brown fat blah blah bc idk
Maybe this can help you decide to do it. I got sick all the time, cold and flues you name it. 1 and a half year ago i started taking 5 minute cold bath every day and i havent been sick since.
Correct me if im wrong but wouldnt staying still be counter intuitive? Because your creating a thermal sheath around yourself. Also by moving your in continous contact with cold water and also your myelin isnt insulatung as well meaning more energy is generated increasing metabolism?
You are correct in a still water tub or bath but those high dollar ones such as the one she is in has circulating water which is constantly moving around and breaking the thermal barrier one would naturally create.
38°F 7 minutes every morning while I meditate, and I definitely don't wear protective gloves or socks. I start by holding my breathe and doing a full immersion for about 15-30 seconds then stay in up to my neck. Is it magic? Nope. But I spent almost 3K on the system, so I use it everyday to avoid hearing my wife complain that I wasted money. Also I don't think it reduces stress as much as it helps you manage it.
I’m sure there isn’t one single reason and it’s actually a complex issue but you may want to have more cold climates in your analysis. Scandinavians are relatively healthy folk and they live in a cold climate part of the year in addition to having a somewhat substantial sauna and plunge pool culture. They also have a generally good standard of living, eat fairly healthily and exercise a moderate amount so it could be a combination of factors.
Submerging into a controlled environment is not the same than the open water swimer exposure to freezing temperatures, that typically finish with hipotermia in the hospital. Did you tree to swim in freezing water?
Norepinephrine release isn’t exactly a healthy or safe thing. Amphetamines for example will stimulate the release of catecholamines like NE, what are the citations for these claims? I’m legitimately interested and want to believe. I just haven’t found an answer yet.
Yes, I, too, began with cold showers and they are absolutely effective for accomplishing cold therapy benefits. Ice baths are on a completely different level and are what I currently do for cold therapy. The benefits are similar but with the ice, are radically increased.
I would guess health benefit wise likely, but after recently buying a tub and keeping water in freezing cold weather, the true 32 degree cold plunge is a lot colder than the coldest setting in the shower

Homie says "still years of research for it to be concrete" and this is just 3 minutes in cold water. covid vaccine was designed, tested and administered in 6 months... let that sink in.
Covid was pushed out way before the long term risks were set in concrete. They pushed out an MRNA vaccine which would have broken ethics codes if it weren’t in a pandemic. If we had more time to research it a lot of us would never have taken the COVID shot
If I take an ice bath, in a few minutes I feel like I could go again. Has anyone tried taking an ice bath, for example, 20 times a day? If so, what did it bring you?
I think it's stuff that people who never really worked do. If you don't do cold plunges and just work all day in hot weather the parts of your body that get the hottest don't grow, and the parts that can manage heat do. You become thermally more efficient if you work in heat. It's like your ball dropping to stay cool and keep everything alive. With muscle you're legs and back and forearms will get stronger but not so much neck and chest. You start to look like slaves in slave pictures. They have big arms and big legs but lean torsos. I wouldn't do cold plunges if I was a professional soccer player, or an olympic rower. You're legs don't need cold plunge. If you're trying to have a watts to kilogram or a watts to thermal efficiency number high I wouldn't do cold plunge except maybe in season of before races.
Mitochondria don't provided the energy in the cells by itself. The ATP stored in the mitochondria provides the energy for the cell. The ATP is the actual energy source, which in turn activates the mitochondria to function as a cells "powerhouse".
