In the past, I've seen smart glass and I have always wondered how a material can go from opaque to clear with just the touch of a button. In this video, we learned the science behind smart glass and how polymer dispersed liquid crystals allow this to be possible.
Thank you so much for watching this video! If you would like to suggest a video idea please leave it in the comments, and if you enjoyed please like and subscribe! It was my pleasure to add a bit of science to your day!

I’m a stubborn mule techy tinkerer and working on building a new front door. It crossed my mind to use smart glass instead of normal because “well someone had to make it, why can’t someone be me” and found this in researching how to make it myself. This may be the first project I’m ever gonna give up before I start and it’s because your description is so clear and understandable I know this ain’t happening 😂 I appreciate you saving me time by being such an easy to comprehend video!!!

Interesting! Thanks! I wonder if it’s possible to have a pattern or semi-random texture for an aesthetic affect. In an office or home that might be preferable to a uniform opaque surface.

You probably can, idk how the electrodes work, but I would assume they either have micro wires running inside the film, or either they use a conductive coating, I would guess it is some sort of silver oxide. In that case you could make it any shape you want
@Term-0
@Term-0 Год назад
@@victornpb I believe this uses indium tin oxide sheet electrodes on either side of the polymer sheet. indium tin oxide is preferred for applications such as these because it is transparent. It is also used in touch screens of smart phones.

You can also just add tint/frosting to smart-glass like normal 👍 There are buses/trains where people on the outside see the entire side of the vehicle looking like a single painted on image (including the windows) and they cannot see the passengers; however the passengers can see out the windows from inside with the translucent image only barely visible! On some passenger trains in Asia (in Japan iirc) they've additionally made the windows with smart-glass on lines that travel really close to high-rise apartment buildings. When the train is passing the apartments the windows are turned opaque for the privacy of the tenants! Its a pretty cool practical usage 💯
@SeveSands-ey9he
@SeveSands-ey9he 18 дней назад
so i guess this explains how the smart glass with strips of transparency when opaque: the current is being run only through the areas that one would want to have transparent, and then either completely turned on to go fully opaque, or vice versa; to shift the strips of transparency [or opacity], one would program it so the areas where the current is running would shift from one end of the conductor strip to the other. correct?. so what i'm still curious about is *how does it work in smart glass that have logos "imprinted" on them?* i've seen the ability to have *a logo appear as if the glass is frosted both on all the glass except the logo* and *the other way around, and* then also *shift to total transparency or [semi-]opacity* ... I have thought of a few possibilities, but not sure if the science backs any of those hypotheses. you're obviously pretty gosh darn intelligent, maybe you can explain it to me!

Great that 99% of UV is blocked, but is that any different that ordinary glass? The (perfectly ordinary) replacement windows I installed in my house claim to block 99% of UV. You could get a UV meter (or camera!) and make a video where you test the transmissibility of UV in different types of glass.

Maybe you answered this already, but when you turn the power off, how come the crystals scatter again? Why aren't they stuck like that? And do they always return to their original position? Or is it random? I hope I'm making sense...
@victornpb
@victornpb 4 года назад
they are suspended in liquid so brownian motion can shuffle the crystals in random orientations. This is the same principle a calculator lcd works it is just lacking the polarizers, your window is just a giant pixel.
@rparl
@rparl 4 года назад
If in the opaque mode, the glass is scattering the light, not necessarily reflecting it, wouldn't the same amount of energy come through, including heat? Although some would be reflected. I'd imagine that the windows would have a glow.

Imagine if an entire building is made with smart glass, 1st of all, the electric bills would be ridiculous, 2nd. It only takes one power outage to ruin your day. 3rd. it would be harder to see when trying to escape a fire or something, thus creating a safety hazard. There are more reasons as to why not, but I ain't smart enough to think of em
