The Science in “Don’t Look Up” with Adam McKay and Dr. Amy Mainzer

Is a comet coming to destroy Earth? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-host Chuck Nice talk about the science behind Netflix’s comet apocalypse movie Don’t Look Up with director Adam McKay and astronomer Amy Mainzer. Are we all gonna die?
We dive into what it took to make this film and what its reception has been. Was there any pushback? Are climate change deniers foaming at the mouth? Find out why Adam decided to make the film about a comet instead of directly about climate change and how he managed to get so many actors on board. Is comedy the best way to change someone’s heart? We break down the ending and discuss what that’s about.
Next, we speak to Amy about science advising on the movie. How much input did she have? Find out how they decided what size the comet should be and the role of scientists in the media. Can we make science more convincing? We explore mining on asteroids and the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) Mission. What would we actually do if an object was headed towards Earth?
At what size do asteroids become really dangerous? What would it take to blow the atmosphere off? Is there anywhere you could hide? Discover what living on a post-impact world would look like and what it looked like for the dinosaurs. Do we have a detection and deflection system? We discuss NEOWISE, future projects to protect Earth from space, and Gauss’s method for orbit determination. Finally, are WE actually the asteroid? And as always a reminder to keep looking up.

It is a world that people are not prepared for, for people still think the future will be like the past. They assume the world will always be as they have expected it to be. Meteor Crater is by far one of the most amazing things I've seen. Like Neil, I would HIGHLY recommend visiting if you're in Arizona. Honestly a lot of the places that people recommend checking out are a little underwhelming, but not Meteor Crater, it's not just a hole in the ground, it's vast. You can't really get an idea of the scale of it until you're actively looking into it, and even then it's much bigger than you even think just standing at the edge of it.

I've been waiting for this episode since I saw the movie. 👏🥳 Neil, I felt that dagger too 😬 and thought of you, my pandemic teacher who told me to "keep looking up" through my lowest moments. I'm glad the movie ended in disaster. I think humanity is so used to happy endings and fairy tales that we need a reality check. I saw a lot of parallels in the movie with vaccine deniers too. It's time for science to inform policies, and for us to stop giving science deniers any power in public decision making. Winslow Arizona is mentioned in the Eagles song, Take It Easy. Thanks for mentioning. Your best episodes are when you have 2 experts from different parts of a topic. This might be my all time favorite.⭐ 💜⭐

Vaccine denial is very different .the movie is about denial of a threat(climate change ) , not a denial of a solution to a threat(vaccine)
@softerliving
@softerliving 2 года назад
@@loneranger718 That's a valid point. I was looking at the overall theme of denial, and human pride and irresponsibility. One could also say the movie was about a threat from space and not about a human-generated problem, but for me, denial of reality and avoiding resolution is the overall message.
@joshuaglass1827
@joshuaglass1827 2 года назад
I could easily say the opposite too. DiCaprio goes off on peer reviewed studies being pushed down and scientists being shut up for speaking the truth (like what has happened to every highly accredited scientist who didn’t fall in lockstep with Covid early treatment and vaccination procedures). There’s no such thing as science denial when science in its very nature is ever changing. Stop treating science like religion. It is not.

My son's band's competition show is based on Don't Look Up, so it is popular here in Fall 2023...also, the dads made a glittery comet that now drops at the end of their performance, so I have you to thank for a husband covered in glitter for the past few weeks while they tried to get it to fall correctly, so Thanx 😉

Check your hilarious, like fall off the chair hilarious but man watch the BBC sometimes he can pronounce cities the sound like they're on the Darkside of the moon don't matter where it is, doesn't matter what place or language does people speak and have it into your browser anything because no thanks my brother you need help with that department :-) and I guess a great thank you so much honour to have something worthwhile to watch

I really think Don’t Look Up was a pretty accurate portrayal of how we would react to the actual situation, never mind the analogy of climate change

Like learning about this stuff. But, really thank science for the fast forward button to keep my mind on the discussion rather than the comedy.

As a flight attendant I flew over the crater in AZ. Even from 32,000’ it looked huge!

Since Neil brought up the subject of Meteor Crater in Arizona, which I visited once before, I was wondering if that impact, some 50,000 years ago was somewhat responsible for causing much the Southwest USA to become desert land?
@jeffs6090
@jeffs6090 2 года назад
Perhaps some, but probably more to due with how the land mass is. If Central America wasn't there and it was mostly water between the continents, the weather movement would make the southwest look more like the southeast.
@RayRay-zt7bj
@RayRay-zt7bj 2 года назад
@@jeffs6090 Yeah, that may be but all the land mass surrounding Meteor Crater looks really strange. I bet the the impact triggered lots of earthquakes and volcanos throughout the west, Yellostone gysers too. Then of course is the upheaval of the continental plates that created the Sierra Nevada and San Gabriel mountain ranges.

In regards to comedy, Carlin had a brilliantly succinct take: “I like to find out where their line might be and deliberately cross it….and make them glad they came.”

Not sure if you guys did not notice it or too humble to mention it but think about what just happen in that movie: Director has taken REAL scientist to fact check the script. I think that's result of Neil's work! He crushed so many good movies where they did not follow the science. Yes, it's a good movie but not correct, and Neil was consistent. Now days, directors took that critics and started to employ scientists. So, thanks Neil for making movie industry better place.
