LEDs are the Present and Future of Horticultural Lighting! However, there is a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation about horticultural LEDS. I see growers often duped by dubious marketing and I believe that the best solution is education!
In this video, I explore the science of horticultural LEDs. I’ll explain the Physics of Light Emitting Diodes and the latest horticultural science about photosynthesis, spectrum, and plant development including cannabinoids.
I answer your questions about LEDs!
0:00 Introduction
1:47 What is an LED?
6:16 How do LED’s work?
10:42 What determines the color or spectrum of LEDs?
13:24 What spectrum do we want for horticulture?
20:36 How do they make Full Spectrum Diodes?
21:39 What determines how efficient LEDs are?
32:26 How important is the diode brand?
37:47 What else should growers know about LEDs
Thanks to Tony and Sheldon from LEDestar for their collaboration on this video. They provided industry insight, footage, graphics, data, and answers to my questions. www.ledestar.com

This is stuff I’ve touched on years ago while people still obsessed with old school options, disagreed with. One thing that I like about efficient white leds these days is not so much that they work well, but the fact that they take the guess work out of all of it. No need to wonder about what the best type of light is or if you should switch spectrums during growth phases. Plug it in and set the timer. That’s it.

Luckily, I have a really great grow light manufacturer right in my backyard called Dazor Lighting. I love to support U.S. made companies. And they have great customer support and a 5 year warranty. Their staff gave me a guided tour, and answer all my questions quickly. I'm so glad there are people out their who care enough to teach us numb-skulls about the products we love and use so much. We dont need the best of the best, we need a quality light, customer service, and to stand behind a product. We are blessed to have the choices we have now a days. I wish you went more in depth on the uv section. Where is your info from? How is it detrimental, does it hurt yield, cannabinoids, terpenes? Also why is it detrimental? Does it burn the plants? What abput outdoor plants? The suns rays have uv in them, and typically indoor growers only use uv for a week or two end of grow. Totally respect your information just would like you to elaborate some. ✌❤

Phosphor quality is one of the more interesting focuses of LED manufacturers. Not only in how efficiently they spread emission energy but also in their lifespan and resilience to this specific environment (sprays). Conformal coatings help but can reduce lifespan if the thermals aren't as performant (not to mention the optical performance). IR heatguns to check localized hotspots should be standard practice for ensuring the luminaire performance over time.

Great vid. I agree that photons are photons, and although a lot of manufacturers are Sanan, I'd have to advise against putting your money in cheap LED makers. If you read their datasheets, not only are they completely ripped off from Samsung, 1st red flag! But, thermal resistance on those diodes are 21 C/W!!! Yeah, you could seriously underdrive them but if the pins are lead (which we don't want in 2024) then you're going to get a tattered phosphor and efficiency will get murdered year for year where if you're a serious grower, even a homegrower, will probably get really annoyed when your lights fizz out. With that said, there are higher quality low priced diodes with more than half the thermal resistance and better materials, but it's still a close call to the better brands out there, even at higher currents. If you really want photons you have to think more red and less green. You can go 80-90% red and 10-20 blue/green.

Knowing suggested # LEDs per watt is SUPER helpful. I have been making dimmable quantum board kits in which I select my own driver, and I would love a video about this. Your rule of thumb let me know my qb288 (272 diodes) are likely efficient up to 90w, but my qb96 (64 diode cob style) light engine should be run at only 21w sadly.
@kj_H65f
@kj_H65f Год назад
I have 8x Qb120s that I built into a fixture prob 3 years ago, and I usually run the total array between 150 and 350 watts (or between 150mA and 350mA per led). Mine are the Samsung LM561C leds for what it's worth. My driver is a meanwell hlg 480h-24B (so 24 v, adjustable pwm, max 480W.) My driver and LED draw need to be in the range that each needs for max efficiency- since the LEDS are pretty much max efficiency when the current is lower (higher light also equals exponentially increased heat losses) it means I want to run them as low as I can while getting enough light. However, based on my lighting needs, I want about 200W in veg and 350W-400W in flower, so I want a driver that is most efficient in that range. IIRC my driver was most efficient between 80% and 100% load, meaning I want to be pulling 380-480W, but since the LEDs are more efficient at lower draws it means my overall system efficiency is somewhat even across the brightness range I run it at. Also since I wanted a 24V system for safety reasons it limits the type of drivers I can pick from. Takeaway- you need to match your driver to your expected load if you want to maximize efficiency, and LEDs in general are going to be individually more efficient at lower current draws. The most efficient way I could build my system would have been a 24V driver with probably max 100W so I could run the driver at max load while driving the LEDs at the bottom of their range, but the problem with that is my max brightness would be very dim. Its a tough balancing act! And if you're building your own it requires some reading and understanding of spec sheets.
@grilljones
@grilljones Год назад
@@kj_H65f thank you. Are you saying thermal efficiency or % of possible par efficiency? I don't think that MJCoco and Migro address the driver portion very much, which I think should be a big topic. It seems like serious growers should be considering choosing their drivers, and I feel the advice seems blind to the driver issue. For example, I think I can run the Qb96 harder than is suggested by the 3-4 led per watt rule of thumb before the driver feels even a little warm.

Do you guys get the same problem? or does perlite mix, fix this and you can water as much as you want and not get any gnats? Any solution?
@bigdfig6083
@bigdfig6083 8 месяцев назад
You will get fungus gnats, regardless, in a grow medium that is always moist. Ranked in descending order from the highest efficacy first, look into a product that goes by the name mosquito dunks or mosquito bites/bits or something similar. They all use bti or Bacillus Thuringiensis Subspecies Isrealensis which is a bacterium specialized for.the purpose of eradicating the larvae of specific pests like gnats. This isn't a once n done magic bullet. This is an ongoing, yet highly effective, treatment to be applied as w irrigation. Next, top dressing the plants with sand, rock and/or other aggregate to at least a 1"/25.4mm layer above the potting mix to inhibit the growth of their larvae. Here, the smaller the particles the better, but not so small it all migrates to the bottom of the pot. Yellow sticky sheets are the least effective, but still decent to keep infestations from occurring, and can be used in combination w one or both of the previous options. All three used together and most likely won't ever see a gnat again.

I'm curious if anyone has tried using a silver wire, instead of a gold wire in the diode. Because not many people know this, but silver conducts electricity better than gold, and produces more power. For example if you had two different top end Competition series car alternators. One was wound with a gold wire core, and the other one wound with a silver wire core. The silver wire core alternator will put out more power at the same rpm level from the engine.
@bigdfig6083
@bigdfig6083 8 месяцев назад
True that. Silver is a slightly better conductor, but gold doesn't oxidize as readily which is the main reason it's chosen in specific applications. Also, it is more malleable, whereas silver is more brittle. So, it can be formed much easier as well as applied in layers an atom thin. No other conductors can and this keeps overall costs competitive w less expensive options.

This is your new flagship Doc, well done! 🙏 Well except for the UV comments of course ha. 20:14 To shut the door on UV and ignore the positive benefits of color and bag appeal is a baffling position. Not to mention the potential plus of a controlled stress response. But hey I get it, you've planted a stiff flag that reads, "I highlight practices and products that show an increase in cannabinoids and yield and ignore ALL others" while all the horticultural companies that use UV and all the UV product manufactures that build it and all the people that visit tanning booths and sunny day beaches... wag their fingers at you. I urge everyone interested in this topic to search "UV Lighting in Horticulture". At least you tell folks that ignore your UV stand to, "be careful", I'll give you that. :)
@DrMJCoco
@DrMJCoco Год назад
The door is not shut, but at this point we do not have good science that supports the benefits that most growers attribute to UV light. I am happy to consider other benefits, but my point remains that there is no good science that supports them. On the contrary the studies that do exist suggest that UV is more often harmful rather than beneficial - particularly shorter wavelength (UVB). Coupled with the fact that UV diodes terrible efficiency, I do not recommend them at all. Happy to agree to disagree ;) Grower Love
