Getting plenty of sleep each night is important to maintaining a healthy and productive life. But how much sleep do you actually need?
Joe Avella and Jessica Orwig tackle this question on the Facebook series "Science the $#!* out of it."
For the average adult, the National Sleep Foundation recommends 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night.
Today, however, many Americans are sleep-deprived, which can have significant adverse effects on physical and cognitive functions.
The reason why some people don’t get enough sleep can be accredited to busy modern lifestyles. But there are other reasons too.
It turns out habits such as using electronic devices or drinking alcohol right before bedtime can be detrimental to getting a good night’s sleep.

Depends what high school you go to. I go to a specialized high school, I have a 3-4 hour commute and 4 hours of homework. In order for me to maintain school and life, I get 5 hours of sleep. If I was going to a regular high school, I could finish my homework in 20 minutes and get A's without even trying.

Or just activate the bluelight filter from your smartphone and everything is fine 😃 Edit 2 years later: No, it's not fine. Please don't spend too much time on the phone before going to sleep, even with a blue light filter it still emits lots of light directly into your eyes.

What about listening to music while you sleep? I sometimes put headphones in with some music on and wake up in the middle of the night (usualy around 2 AM)and just take them out. My music is always on the lowest volume and my ears dont ring or hurt when I wake up.

Odd thing i do when im tired but cant seem to drift off to sleep. I roll my ankle back and forth from side to side, usually my right foot for some reason, stretch your big toe to the left, your pinky toe to the right, or even make a tapping action with your foot, make the heel stretch back inverting your achilles then relax (should feel like your tapping your sole on something thats not there. This might sound stupid and may or may not work, but its something i do and seems to work, everyones different though.

If you go to your settings of your phone there is an option called night shift which that blue screen you said gets removed and adjusted so you can still go to sleep

I've always refused to keep my phone put away for the last hour or so of my night--luckily there are red filters you can get that block out the blue light. Good for sleep! They should have mentioned this. 😋

The lighting is yellow. A balanced-temperature bulb should solve it. That's better than try to fix it in post production.

There's something wrong with all these studies and suggestions because I used to fall asleep with all the lights on , the tv on and the family on talking, and sometimes the family made fun of me while I fell asleep while they are still awake, but as I am growing older my sleep time is going less and less now I am barely sleeping like 3-5 hours per night and with struggling sleeping

The best way to live - intermittent fasting. You shouldn't eat or drink anything but water at least 4 hours before bed. That way your body doesn't have to work during sleep. And you wake up like a champion

4 is enough, just need to be sure to eat and stay hydrated. Learned that from tweakin but 48 hrs hits the breaking point for most peeps. I find at the 24hr mark is when involuntary twitching starts.

mm... I need 9 to 10 hours of sleep a day. Falling asleep is easiest at 9 to 12 pm and without an alarm I'll wake up at 9 to 10 am (with alarm at 6 to 7 am). I haven't found any correlation between blue light and sleep even though I'm often on computer before sleep. On the other hand, what matters is having a quiet, dark and slightly cool room when trying to sleep. Having a regular sleeping pattern is important along with good bed hygiene. After adapting to waking up at 6 am I used to wake up that time without alarm, too. Any kind of pain will make it impossible to sleep as well as having too much energy (eat a lot and exercise right before 'sleep') or stress and so on... How to fall asleep - don't do anything and forget you even exist. It didn't work? Make sure things are fine and try again. Maybe listen to something slow but enjoyable. Keeping eyes closed and not moving if not necessary...

I'm suffering from hypersonia or over sleeping. I sleep so much that I can't study. My daily routine is messed up badly. Even when I'm awake, I'm drowsing. I searched in the internet, but couldn't find anything helpful. I listen to heavy metal music, drink 2/3 cups of coffee at a time and also cycled everyday for about 40 mins but nothing worked. Somebody, plz help me..........

I can function without issue on six hours of sleep, but most days will get seven preferably. However as often as not, that extra hour comes from a nap in the middle of the day. I am usually asleep within a minute of putting my head down. Part of the trick is to allow myself to enter a dream state in which I do not fixate on any given thought or specifically think about anything in particular. I let my mind float. In a very real sense, I stop caring about anything, I do not anchor in any one thought, just let it all go. You can care again in the morning. A note about computer screens, there are screens where you can control the blue light coming from the screen. I have my own set to almost exclude blue entirely. Not only does the screen not interfere with my sleep, it does not generate any eye strain whatsoever even if I spend all day in front of it.

Lack of sleep can cause serious issues. One definitely needs 8-9 hours of sleep, exceptions apart. Else can cause many health problems including premature greying, acidity, reduced productivity, affect on memory, irritation, accelerated ageing etc.
