The "Scorpion" with which René Higuita amazed Wembley
On September 6, 1995, one of the most unforgettable plays in the history of football took place. The Colombian goalkeeper René Higuita starred in an action never seen before on a playing field and that left the fans who attended Wembley to watch the friendly match between the English team and the Colombian team astonished.
The play occurred in the 21st minute of the first half, when an England attack ended in a bad cross from Jamie Redknapp. The English footballer hit badly and the ball headed towards the goal with a slow, pumping parabola.
Under those circumstances, any goalkeeper would have caught the ball without any difficulty, but Higuita was not a conventional goalkeeper. René preferred not to keep the ball, and preferred to push himself towards the grass to clear the ball with his studs.
The fans who went to the stadium applauded the goalkeeper's recklessness, although in truth the play would have been invalidated due to offside. The final result was 0-0 but the score ended up being inconsequential. René demonstrated his elasticity to the entire world and the "scorpion" remained in the memories of all football fans.
