There's a period in Scottish history that had a profound effect, not only on Scotland but on the whole world!
This period is called the Scottish Enlightenment, and it really was Scotland’s ‘Golden Era’.
The Scottish Enlightenment ran for about 100 years from the mid 1700s through to the middle/end of the 1800s.
Personally, I feel it is the most important period in Scotland’s long history, and has defined, for many people, what Scotland and ‘Scottishness’ truly means.
Watch this video and learn how Scotland helped invent our modern world!

These videos are really helpful, and I thank you for providing them (: If I may ask, what were the Scottish enlightenment thinkers' attitudes towards emotionality? A large portion of books I've read assume SE was marked by absolute empiricism and importance of reason, yet the more I learn about the thinkers the more I feel this is not true.

Well, there's an awful lot in your question, and I'm probably not qualified enough to supply a proper answer! In my own way, I would say that whilst Scottish Enlightenment thinkers valued reason above all, the importance of human emotion is hugely important. Frances Hutcheson, who many consider one of the founding fathers of the Scottish Enlightenment, talks a lot about emotions especially in the desire for freedom which he felt was inherent in all humans. Adam Smith, who I feel has wrongly been pilloried as being 'right wing', highlighted that the emotions of the baker wishing to protect and care for his family, took precedence over any altruistic feelings of caring for the community. You should perhaps do some research of your own on this subject - I'm sure it could be fascinating! So glad you enjoyed the videos. Kind regards, Gordon

The Scots were often trusted to oversee and Run the British Empire. Many were the Empires officer class .

Indeed they were, Michael. It’s a subject that I would like to do a video on in the future. By and large, Scots ran the British Empire! Kind regards, Gordon
