Conservator Gry Landro talks about what happened to the famous painting after the robbery.
The Scream is Edvard Munch's most famous painting, and at the museums most popular motif. But for two years it was missing, after armed robbers brutally tore it down from the museum wall and threw it into a waiting van. The day the painting was returned to the museum, conservators waited eagerly to investigate the painting's condition. Conservator Gry Landro was at work that day.

Arguably convey a sense of isolation and straitjacketed frustration in the world can relate to. My gaze comes to rest on two small human figures, then the eye moves to the right, led by the lines of the red sky evoking blood and the coastline which snaking around like a living creature, add to the sense of unease, before returning to the human figure in the middle. Now, the world can be a nasty crazy place out there, we need a lot of courage and we need a lot of resilience after that, and we will fall down before we stand up… What really matters is the silence of the night in our conscience, when we are alone. We cannot control what happens but we can use what happens. We have so much reserves of love and support inside us, if we can just remember that in our mind and move on.

Thanks. I think this image will have resonance for many people given the level of uncertainty we now have to live with. The world has changed and it is hard to adjust. I agree with you that we have inner resources (and possibly prayer etc), but we will at times feel the pain. Your analysis is interesting as it is true that an environment can appear threatening. In fact, the Oslo waterfront is stunning and beautiful, which makes this painting especially thought provoking.

I really feel like I saw this exhibited in Madison WI in the early 1980s but maybe I'm imagining that. Tried googling it but found nothing. Hmmm. Also I guess this isn't the one that sold for $107M?
