Something of a rite of passage for me. In 1958 I was four years old, and my parents would take me to the drive-in movies which I usually enjoyed. When this movie came out, there was an ad in the local paper that showed the Skull, and it scared the sh** out of me. I was also scared by the wicked witch of Oz, but was told that she wasn't real; that made me feel better. So I asked my dad, are skulls real? Yes they are real, and you have one inside your head! That weirded me out for quite a while. When we finally got to the drive in, I mostly hid in the back seat; didn't want to look at the skull. A few years later, the movie came on late night TV. I had to sneak out of bed to watch it. Barely managed to stay awake through most of it. Was still a little scary, but mostly I got over my skull frights..

This movie came out in ‘58, making me 10 or 11 at the time. I always wanted to see it but somehow that never happened. Now, a few days before turning 73, I got my chance. Somehow, over a little more than 60 years, my taste in cinema must have changed. I will say that a 5 to 7 year old seeing this in a theater might have been forever changed. The 10 to 12 year old crowd would have eaten it up. Not exactly on my bucket list, I do feel this is a goal that has been met. Now on to better things, like The Bride of Frankenstein.

You guys should know that when this film, William Castle rigged the theaters with floating ghosts, put skulls under seats and all that. He offered life insurance for the film goers as they went into the theaters. When he made The Tingler with Vincent Price, he rigged the seats to vibrate like they were getting electrical shocks. He was the gimmick master of his movies.

Yes, a takeoff of Gaslight, for sure. Many ppl pan this movie outright, i dont think it was that bad...you could do a lot worse, for sure. It had something to hold ny interest, even tho the end was ridiculous. Peggy Webber did as good a job as she could with the material she was given. Some of her scenes were very risque for the time, too. Other parts she took on as her carreer progressed showed her acting versatility. Luv the old b&w horror films! :)
