Join John from Backcountry Angling Ontario (Check his channel out here) / @lostlakes
and myself as we set out on the search for adventure!
We paddle in to an unknown lake, have to cut our path through the woods to find an unhospitable lake to try and camp on.
I have a very up close encounter with a wild animal that was a little too close for comfort.
This is episode 1 of a small series.
Hope you all enjoy!!

Loved watching your version. "One of the most grueling portages I've ever done." One of those days where no footage could capture how difficult that was. Between the two of us, we've seen hundreds of ports and that was one of the worst I recall. Also cannot believe how well your bug system worked for black flies. I'm taking notes on that one. Also can't believe the fishing on camp #1 wasn't off the hook... Just can't. Badly wish you had got eyes on that animal. I have to think it was a bear, but like the fish that got away, I'll always wonder.

When you said the camp was full of "shrubbery" this came to mind. “First you must find... another shrubbery! Then, when you have found the shrubbery, you must place it here, beside this shrubbery, only slightly higher so you get a two layer effect with a little path running down the middle. ("A path! A path!") Then, you must cut down the mightiest tree in the forest... with... a herring!”

I had a black bear stand me off at 30 yards and that humfing noise is the same that he made along with some jaw snapping. That was one persistent animal. Lucky you just didn't have the body fat index he was looking for. I would have been dead. I have now been packing a 6 oz air horn duct taped on my pepper spray and have had success with 2 different mama bears and cub combos using that horn. Thanks for another great video. Heh, yeah me too. I always marvel at how skinny he is despite eating pretty good portions. I didn't hear much beyond bear breathing noises - do they have Grizzlies in Ontario? Higher pitched purring noises could have been cubs.
@Objective-Observer
@Objective-Observer 3 года назад
Thank you for clarifying the Odd Noise as humfing. I heard chest beating, or heavy breathing while manipulating some object, like a badger or wolverine digging. The jaw snapping also helps, because there was a hollow nature to the humfing, plus the stacatto snap at the end... like a jaw clamping shut. Then there was the 'moan.' I've heard farm animals and dogs make a similar noise more from Curiosity, instead of aggression. Why could we not see that Bear? See, that's where all the Sasquatch Conspiracy will come from: we cannot see that animal, despite all indications it is large. I ask to learn. We don't have bears in most of Texas, maybe in the far east in the Piney Woods, and maybe in Big Bend National Park... but I never hear of their stories. We do have mountain lions/pumas, but they won't make a sound when sneaking up on you.

I just love the sound of the wild, and the running water. When I returned from Ohio after 8 years,I couldn’t wait to get my 18’ ft boat tided up and put back on my mooring on Loch Lomond, where I fished for Atlantic Salmon and Sea Trout. I’m in my 60’s and watch every episode you share with us on you tube with total enjoyment. Thanks Joe. PS where’s and how is Tripper.?

Oh my God Joe I have been watching you a long time and never been as scared as I was at the end of this episode. When you got stranded in the forest fire that was scary too but this is a whole different type of scary. Wearing headphones did NOT help by the way -i t felt like I was there and when the huffing and puffing got really loud I about crapped myself lol!

18 years and no issue in Northern Ontario. Then about 7 years ago we had a bear in camp when we came off the lake. Lucky for us it was the first year we actually camped on an old logging road instead of a portage or remote lake. It came after us and we got in the truck. After running it out of camp 5-6 times and it coming beck we just pulled camp and left. If we had been on portage or remote lake camp it may have gotten ugly. Ever since we carry a can of bear spray when in the boat and set an electric fence around the camp. The fence actually kept a bear out of our gas cans one night a couple of years ago. Folks that laugh a bear off don't understand encountering a bear in the actual wilderness.

Those damn things are huge to be honest and cubs are abound right now so you have to be super careful. I always carry, figure the loud bang would be enough to scare them away more then me trying to get close enough with bear spray.

Pretty sure that forest beast was waiting for Joe to finish the egg muffin before he pounced on that two-for-one meal. ; ) Nice one Joe! Can't wait for Ep. 2

I've heard that sound before. When I did , I looked up and realized I was smack in between a mama bear and her Cubs. I don't think you were in the same predicament but I think you were pretty close to her cubs and she was getting a little concerned. I could be totally wrong. I guess maybe we will see in the next video.

I love how rugged this adventure is! You're making your own path in a very isolated, beautiful lake. It's the kind of thing that an outdoorsman dreams of. Cheers!
