Ahh, yes Sears. Such a great name. Kenmore, Diehard, Craftsman. They were the anchor store of my local mall. I remember the catalog as a young kid. Going through it and circling exactly what I wanted for Christmas. I am pretty sure my first bike came from Sears. It was a banana seat space invaders bike. I really loved that Bike.
My entire childhood wardrobe came from there! 😂 In Canada we were a little luckier as the catalog kept going while it had stopped in the US but it got smaller and smaller eventually. I heard they had started it up again but it will never be the same.
Oh yeah! My brother just noted to me today that Consumers Distributing was really the beginning of Amazon and in fact was but without the online ordering. Remember the line ups around the holidays? Loved that catalog as well. We can relive them over and over in our heads and hearts, that's what counts.
Hi! Yes me too! Sadly also my aunt had a bunch a couple years ago but they all got completely destroyed. But I was able to save some of the old stuff, even a brand new Sears sandwich maker from the 80s. Thanks for watching!
The Argos catalogue was the nearest I ever came to anything like that. Argos was an English line of "warehouse" stores that had a few branches in Ireland too. The thing with Argos was (and still is) that it was not a regular type of store. You choose what you wanted from the catalog at home, then went to Argos filled in a slip with the info about what you wanted, cat. number description, quantity etc. and took the slip to the counter. Then you paid for your items, got a number and waited for the things you had bought to be brought out front. It worked really well most of the time. Problem was that around Christmas (when it was really busy) after paying you could be waiting up to 2 hours for your items to be brought to you. It was great going through the catalog though (even before the stores came to Ireland) just looking at the toys in the thing was almost as good as playing with them.
Ha! We had the exact same thing called "Consumers Distributing" and was exactly as you described. My brother told me yesterday that he remembered the same thing and noted these stores were the real start of things like Amazon. They had it all including the "shoulder and face massager" for women! 😂
