The Lord gives a great spindle combination regarding revelation to Oliver Cowdery in D&C. The "mind" and the "heart". ❤ But I loved that you connected it to the lines of personal revelation and prophetic revelation. It may also be connected to the law of witnesses which could be thought of as the ancient form of a fault tolerant system that you describe. Thanks for your thoughts Autumn.

I love this concept. Thank you. It is easy to be deceived by just following our spindle. Truth is when our spindle lines up with priesthood spindle. Maybe that is why the Lord chooses 15 prophets, seers and revelators. The chance of 15 being deceived is very small.

Don Bradley explains it in his book about the lost 116 pages.

This doesn't work. The person who actually saw the Liahona work said that just one spindle pointed the way. "And within the ball were two spindles; and the ONE pointed the way whither we should go into the wilderness." The other spindle must have had a purpose but it is not written out what it was.

The liahona also had messages

There are 5 times in the scriptures where +look and +live are combined together. Alma and Helaman use that language when speaking of "looking to Christ" to live, and they give the Brass Serpent as a Type for that (Alma 33:19; Helaman 8:15). Alma goes further and likens the Brass Serpent to the Brass Liahona and says that the Liahona is also a Type where one can "look and live". And then finally, Jesus Himself says that we should look to Him and live (3 Nephi 15:9). That's very exclusive company. So maybe the Liahona is not so much a Type of the Holy Ghost, but of Jesus Christ Himself. I think it is very well established that the Brass Serpent is a Type of Christ. Alma makes this pretty clear: "Behold, he was spoken of by Moses; yea, and behold a type was raised up in the wilderness, that whosoever would look upon it might live. And many did look and live... then cast about your eyes and begin to believe in the Son of God, that he will come to redeem his people" (Alma 33:19-22) And Helaman just comes right out and says it: "And as many as should look upon that serpent should live, even so as many as should look upon the Son of God with faith, having a contrite spirit, might live, even unto that life which is eternal." (Helaman 8:15) And then Alma takes this comparison of the Brass Serpent and Jesus Christ and adds in the Liahona: "Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will DIRECT thee for good; yea, when thou liest down at night lie down unto the Lord, that he may watch over you in your sleep; and when thou risest in the morning let thy heart be full of thanks unto God; and if ye do these things, ye shall be LIFTED UP at the last day. And now, my son, I have somewhat to say concerning the thing which our fathers call a ball, or DIRECTOR-or our fathers called it Liahona" (Alma 37:37-38) "And now I say, is there not a type in this thing? For just as surely as this DIRECTOR did bring our fathers, by following its course, to the promised land, shall the words of Christ, if we follow their course, carry us beyond this vale of sorrow into a far better land of promise. O my son, do not let us be slothful because of the easiness of the way; for so was it with our fathers; for so was it prepared for them, that if they would LOOK they might LIVE; even so it is with us. The way is prepared, and if we will LOOK we may LIVE forever. And now, my son, see that ye take care of these sacred things, yea, see that ye LOOK to GOD and LIVE. Go unto this people and declare the word, and be sober. My son, farewell." (Alma 37: 45-47) I highlighted a few words here... The Lord will direct us for good, the Liahona was a director. Look to the Liahona and live, look to God and live., etc. Alma also uses the words "lifted up", which is terminology used with both the Brass Serpent and the Lord Himself. If the Liahona were a Type for the Holy Ghost, I think this showcases our own failings with the Gift of the Holy Ghost in our lives. Like Lehi’s family with the Liahona, how often do we forget about the Holy Ghost in our lives? How often do we wander around needlessly when we could have very simply paid attention to the Holy Ghost? How easy would it have been for Lehi or others to simply make the effort to look at the Liahona every morning, or throughout the day, to find their course? And yet, they did not. But I think that the Liahona is a Type of Christ. How easy is it for us to consult with the Lord every morning, or throughout the day, to find our course? And yet, we do not. It really is a type and a shadow of our relationship with Jesus Christ. We often read the Book of Mormon and wish that we had a Liahona in our own lives. We do. Are we looking to Christ so that we may live?

I have understood that one of the spindles pointed a direction and the other spindle indicated what they would find - such as water, game, shelter, etc. I apologize I don't know where I got that information. Not that it changes that it helped them know if the Liahona was working . . . do you have the link to the article you read?
