In this video, I talk about the way Gypsy musicians (Sinti) approach Gypsy Jazz / Jazz Manouche music on the guitar, violin, or any instrument. I have been in close contact with Sinti musicians for almost 20 years. I have worked and performed with artists such as Bireli Lagrene, Angelo Debarre, Stochelo Rosenberg, Tchavolo Schmitt, Dorado Schmitt, etc.

I am proud to say I figured out the gypsy bossa rhythm myself and when I play with folks that can’t do it. Some don’t even hear the difference. I play it strictly the way you showed. I love it.

@@DenisChangMusic It’s interesting they left before Gypsy Jazz became a thing but their music is so similar, they play rhythm the same way and similar leads even though they don’t play “Jazz”. When my grandma first heard Gypsy Jazz she couldn’t believe that people were playing music like her dad used to play. Long before Gypsy Jazz

This is the best video about The Gypsy’s approach to learning music which to me, is like, the most Functional way of learning anything... I haven’t ever had the chance to travel to Europe as I am from South America, but I’d really love to at least visit to Django’s Festival anytime before I die. Thank you Denis because every time I listen to you I feel like I have already been to France Germany, Canada etc. through your videos, you make us all travel to all those places where Gypsy Jazz is the rule and it’s like if I knew all the gypsies you mention... just to let you know that I just spent the whole hour listening to your video... thanks!

Really enjoyable video my friend. Thanks for a prima into the gypsy politics, history and interesting titbits. Your mention of reverse (up) sweeping has really helped me, to break the "rules" :) I can play the hard G arpeggio in Montagne Sainte Genevieve using that technique I like it can great some attack on it if maintain floating hand. Thanks the keeping the knowledge alive, all the best from UK

My first time living amongst flamenco gypsies; gitanos, I learnt all of this very quickly. It all seemed more about love and reward than direct teaching. If a child showed interest then they were given the tools to express themselves. If they didn't they did other things. It was just all about support but in kind of loose way so their was room for them to discover and fund their own sound.

A good vid for appreciating the "intuitive". Whatever words you use to try and describe what Django did to swing must take into account that he did it without having been taught, and mostly lacking a language for what he was doing. How much was taken from others and how much grew out of his "intuition' is only important in the context of historical accuracy. It's a bit like the Wright Bros. going from bicycles to airplanes in a couple years of focused trial and error.

Yes, Gypsy was not popular in the 1990ties. But in 1991 i saw a movie with Steve Martin- he make a bit music by his self i guess, jazzguitar- and he took as film music many original numbers from Django:-D. This was the time i began to love this sound but i had no idea what this type of music was. I mean it was jazz, but ther was no name for it. Then my brother gave me some cd's he recorded for me, because he thought i will like it, and there it was again, this vintage sound...he told me about Django and his playing with only 2 fingers. To buy a gypsy guitar in austria is a nightmare, they are not availible here, only in germany at next option. Thanks for your video, i listening while cleaning up the kitchen:-D

Super denis, j’adore ta manière d’approcher les chose . I believe intuition is stronger than structure but i never believed that extrems are the way , rather 70% / 30% , anyway the important point is good music !! Whatever the way is . But I also think that some are just not made with this rythm and sound fibber no Mather how much they try , it’s like people who just can’t dance or people who just don’t get Mathematics but doesn’t mean they must not do it ! The way is the goal at the end of the day because it’s so much fun and passion drives all of us who try , that’s what’s beautiful !

Like I said, ultimately, I want to be kind and respectful to people, but sometimes the radical “SJWs” sometimes make it really hard.
