2:35 Touching again on the pure spectacle that is Gael, I find it so poetic that your first confrontation in DS1 is a Hollow with a broken sword, just for the final boss of the series to be a Hollow with a broken sword.
@poofle999 true, but this specific laser attack looks very similar to the design of Godzilla's atomic breath in Shin Godzilla from 2016. From how it begins as fire, but then condenses into a laser beam, and how the laser burns out and Midir collapses, it all feels similar :)
I remember back when the DLC was released, Midir was considered the probably hardest boss fight so far features in a Souls-like. The first attempts are incredibly difficult and crushing, especially when you're unaware, that you're supposed to focus on his head. But looking back I feel like all that difficulty was somewhat overblown. He is one of the hardest bosses to face at your first try, but he is incredibly telegraphed, perfectly consistent with his hit boxes and he still gives you room to breathe inbetween combos. One of my favorite fights in any Soulslike til this day, and by far the best dragon. Love him.
Honestly a big factor in Souls fights was intimidation. They were so hard until you beat them the first time, and all of a sudden you knew you could take them down.
@@alexandremontesinos7876 never played any souls game using magic making the game so trivial and boring i only play deprived from the beginning and just go from there using melee only
Demon princes was one of my favorite bosses of all time. I got myself summoned to help dozens of people through that fight. I probably fought them a triple digit number of times.
Darkeater Midir is also the first dragon boss that I know of to use an attack that is a laser fire breath that explodes after it hits, something that Capcom has used a lot since.
Gogmazios actually featured a sort of beam like breath that results in explosions afterwards, and a few others have beam breaths prior to MHW, though the only thing that comes to mind prior to Midir's breath attacks where it starts as flame before focusing is definitely Godzilla movies, So Gog Was before Midir
midir is my favorite dragon fight there is. his lore is amazing and tragic too his entire race murdered but he was saved and raised by the gods while he was a infant and after the war Gwyn built the ringed city for the pygmy as a reward and gave Midir the task to defend it and owing to his immortality as a archdragon to eternally fight against the dark. but the city is just a fake its not a reward its a prison for the pygmy that fought in the war but was not given any thanks or recognition for doing so. and with Midir defending the city by swallowing and eating the abyss corrupting him and turning him mad continuing his duty long after the gods had perished/left
Alas as much as midir was held to the highest regard when it comes to dragon bosses, it now comes to none other than "BAYLE THE DREAD" who's boss fight has now solidified himself as my personal greatest dragon boss in gaming
Midir felt like the first time we actually got to fight one of the " Ancient Dragons" that existed in the time of Gwyn. Though corrupted by Dark, his strength never faded.
awesome video, midir has always been one of the coolest and most visually pleasing bosses and you did him mad justice in this. the hype his phase transition alone had, I thought it would be hard to top it. And like 3 weeks ago I'd of said no elden ring dragon could hold a candle, but now I think Bayle might finally gave midir some competition for the top.
@@dracopo8862 Yeah but Placidusax is terribly injured when we fight him. His movements are like an old man's and he has 3 missing heads. Maybe Shadow of the Erdtree will give us the best Elden Ring dragon fight.
@@samk4065 myazaki was shocked that someone beat dark souls 3 no hit shortly after it was released. he underestimated his player base. it is not to a huge degree but they do to an extent.
I'd also like to point out, in almost every area in the Ringed City you can find Midir just, stalking you at a distance. He's also THE last dragon. After killing him, his kind is gone forever. Makes killing him all the more sad.
Shoutout to Gael, Friede, Nameless and Dragonslayer armor(and Pontiff)(and Twin princes), but Midir is still my favorite DS3 boss (also Demon prince) (DS3 has too many good bosses)
It was Midir to me. But now he is second to Placidusax. That emp nuke slow-‘mom animation blew my fucking mind. I mean that’s not even mentioning him teleporting all over the fucking place and being beaten to the brink by Bayle
Midir still is, to this day, the boss that took me the longest to beat in any Souls game. It must've took me a whole week of playing a couple hours daily to beat him, but also no other boss has ever felt as rewarding to beat, I was literally shaking when I finally got that last hit on him. With that said: Do I think it's the hardest boss in the series? Not at all. Once you actually learn him, he's not that hard. There are many other bosses that feel and are actually harder, but even then, none of them took me as long to beat as Midir, so he'll always have a special place in my heart. Kalameet itself feels harder than him, not to mention some of Sekiro's and Elden Ring bosses (I'm still going through the DLC tho lol).
I summoned some random dude with Ledo’s hammer and a loin cloth. I spent the entire fight healing and running. he did all the work. That was the best boss experience I have ever participated in
I never did beat Darkeater Midir in my Dark Souls 3 playthrough. Given that I finally beat the Shadow of the Erdtree's final boss yesterday and that really stretched the limit for the amount of difficulty I could handle, maybe I should give Midir another try.
I get why people think he's hard but I don't really think I struggled with him at all. It's to the point now where I can consistently no-hit Midir. His attacks are really telegraphed and you can most definitely go underneath him. But never go for his legs. When he stands up to do his fire attack downwards, walk to his tail. The fire doesn't reach you and it's just a bunch of free hits on his tail. The only attacks that are kinda intimidating are his lasers but unless you stand directly in the path of it, they're pretty easy to avoid.
I remember first facing him and was scared shitless when he was charging at me. But after fighting him countless times I got his every moveset down and was able to beat him on my 25th try. It was one epic as hell boss fight and then helped others out to fight him. Maaaaan were those the glory days.
I’ve always thought of Midir as an amalgamation of all of the tragic bosses and NPCs we encounter throughout the series, and his theme song as the forlorn elegy of all of them. He is Sif 2.0, he is Manus, Father of the Abyss, and he is a hollow- every mad hollow we ever met, and everyone who ever succumbed to the curse and lost themselves. He is Gwyn, and he is Old Hero; a “great soul” that still gleams with sedimented vestiges of strength and finesse accrued throughout a valiant and steadfast bygone legacy in pursuit of a grand ideal, subordinated now to a blind will that strives on emptily, irrespective of the degradation and ultimate loss of purpose and meaning, and drives the husk that it still commands to flail on senselessly and defiantly until finally put to rest by the player. When I drop down that baleful chute and the song starts up, it always kinda feels like this is From saying, “This is it; this is Dark Souls.” It’s your whole journey, embodied in one being and synthesized into a single conflict. That’s why he has such a deep well of attacks and fights so madly. That’s why he has so much HP.
Walking out of Midirs and Nameless Kings fight gave me the exact same rush of accomplishment that I recieved after defeating Fatalis in MHWIB solo. Its such a nice feeling and such a rush to learn all the mechanics in the fight and just WAIL on the opponent trying to take your life. Im so sad to have never played a souls earlier in my life, these games are incredible.
Funny how this was released a few weeks before the dlc, which now imo hosts my fav. boss fight of all time. Bayle. The midir fight I was hoping to see in Elden Ring finally happened
Midr was truly terrifying, not just because it was difficult, but also because of the pure spectacle of the fight. There are a few similar fights in Monster Hunter, but nothing has that kind of atmosphere, except for maybe Shara Ishvalda, as that was absolutely nuts, or even Fatalis.
I remember giving up on Midir my first time, but after I watched some videos about him and his story, my heart sunk, he's the loyal protector of this city, raised by the gods to battle the abyss, and yet he's still corrupted by it, who knows for how long has he been suffering? I always kill him nowadays, his poor soul needs resting
I never found him that hard, but you will die a few times while you learn his pattern. Baiting his comboes while hugging his face feels very threatening before you realize it's the safest place to be. He is a blast to face regardless.
Appreciation for Midir's fight, despite design decisions that some would proudly declare to be shortcomings, is in my opinion parallel to a child's love for dinosaurs. You have to be in awe of the Dragon. The very idea of a Dragon. To love Midir's encounter. This is because he is the essence of a real and brutal struggle against a mythical monster that is as much a force of nature as it is a ferocious beast. No dragon in all of Souls delivers that feeling as well as Midir. Drakes, Wyverns, Dragons on bridges, decaying dragons, wounded dragons, hollow wyverns, Wyverns that die from one clean hit to head, stationary dragons with predictable attacks, dragons locked in a cage. None of them deliver on the feeling of REALLY FIGHTING a dragon one on one (or one on two, but that hardly matters). Even Sihn and Kalameet suffer from design limitations that may make them more tolerable fights as a whole, but detract from the allure of a true dragon. You might as well be fighting giant birds. Midir is simply *built* *different* And he's built RIGHT
half disappointed that in the Elden Ring DLC instead of putting a dragon in "that place" again we got a weird looking knight on a horse in a place that looks EXTREMELY similar to Midir's arena
First playthrough I did of ring city I somehow beat Midir on my first try. I was running a strength/faith build. Second run through running a dex build I took forever to beat him.
I personally think that if we got a Prime Placidusax with a 2nd phase, he would be my favorite dragon fight. I like Midir and Sinh a lot more in terms of lore, fun and fight.
This was such a fight . Single-handedly the boss that had me actually rage in DS3. I almost quit the game during this fight and this was after I beat everyone else 😭 but I was too stubborn to let anything in this game live
Even if I know for being a novice at FromSoft games, I still want to actually sit and enjoy Dark Souls III for the fact the atmosphere of that game for me is what I’m into.
I spent so much time on the PS4 version of DS3 fighting Midir. Not sure if I was on NG1 or +2. I even had to respec and change my build because Magic spells or moonlight greatsword was not cutting it. Had to use the washing pole katana with lightning damage to have a better chance of winning. The fight took me 7 minutes. Not gonna lie, the boss was a test of skill and patience. Glad I got to experience Midir. I’m not fighting him again.
Midir is about the only dragon fight in any action game that's actually interesting. Like the set pieces where you have to run across bridges and it's tense and actioney are good but the actual fights are just stationary dragons that don't move much are pretty lame. Midir is so good because he uses his body and actually fights you
Looking back, the only thing underwhelming about the Midir fight is the arena, is really has no personality and could have looked more abyss-like by being surrounded by darkness, souls and abysses and mystic otherworldly stuff.
Midir is scary, as big things with lots of teeth are. Counterintuitively, the safest place to be is directly in front of those teeth, as the attacks he uses while you're directly in front of him are the easiest to avoid and punish.
Post ER DLC comment here. Bayle was great, I have been a “Let me solo him” sign many times… but Midir is better. Both are great and Igon shall forever be remembered man… but Midir is a secret best boss in the series contender.
did not realize what the channel name was when i clicked the video and got jump scared by his voice. Did not know Evan ventured into dark souls content.
Midir is literally a Monster Hunter boss. He even have the same problem of being so hard to attack if he has the aggro on someone else because he moves so much. But if YOU have the aggro then it's easy to hit him il the head
Midir I think is probably one of the best dragon boss fights in gaming and can only be rivaled by Monster Hunter World's Safi'jiiva and Fatalis. What sets him apart from the other two is there's no special mechanics that forces you to play in a specific way just to win (like walls, raid boss rules, etc). Its just you(with optional and limited companions) and a big ass dragon in the arena with no escape.
Midir is just a running healthbar and half the time he plays like the Ancient Dragon from DS2. He spits fire below himself u run away just to run back and hit his had and that over and over again. Sometimes he flies away like Elden Beast so u cant deal any damage so much fun wow.
A joke boss for Casters, a IMMOVABLE MOUNTAIN for melee players....but man, this Dragon commands respect!!! Hard or not.....the story of Midir is one fine story.....it was an honor to take him out of his missery...
Midir is such a cool boss, the first time I fought with was with some Randoms I met online n we formed an rpg esk party to beat him. One was a heavy tank one was a mage a d one was a ranger
Midir is an amazing boss fights, and one of the most impressive in all the souls games. Funnily enough, the first time that I encountered him I defeated him second try and underleveled. I went once alone against him and only managed to do like 20% of his life before dying, then the next try I saw the summoning of the NPC and I thought let's try that. The NPC got obliterated in 15 seconds, and I in those 15 seconds I had only dealt 8& of Midir's life at most, like barely noticeable. Obviously I thought I was done for, since we you summon bosses health increases accordingly. But since playing souls games require you to have one simple mindset: "learn while you fail", I did just that. I managed to defeat the boss in that one try. Like I was honestly impressed and my original thought at that time was that the boss is actually really easy, it's simply visually stunning and impressive but one of the easiests fights in the DLC. Subsequent walkthrough of the game have proven that I must had activated ultra instinct or something, because it's a boss that I still struggle by this day when I reach him. I don't struggle that much, but it does give me a hard time.
When you said "who's the best ending boss, Gale or Elden Beast" I actually laughed out loud. People out there don't actually think Elden Beast is a better boss fight than Gale do they?
DS3 is great, and I very much enjoyed all the bosses in the Ringed City. Midir obviously holds a special place in my heart, as my favorite from any of the Dark Souls bosses... But! (Bear with me...) Fatalis in MHW Iceborne definitely takes my #1 spot for incredible "Dragon" fights. Yes, I know, not the topic at hand. But man, that fight is easily my favorite game fight ever.
