Wanted to share here for those who haven't heard yet but on April 1st 2023 Klaus Teuber the founder of Catan has sadly passed away at the age of 70, let Catan live on in his name.
RIP. Just started getting back into Catan in the past couple of months. I love the perfect blend of depth, strategy, & simplicity. Klaus' spirit will live on!
Red lost the social game soooo bad. That first interaction he had where he said that anyone who robs him gets robbed twice just turned the others against him. For blue and black, it 100% wasn't about who won, it was just about red losing.
It wasn’t even just the first interaction. The entire game he was being an jerk lol. Right near the end instead of working with blue and black he started calling them dumbass’s.
Mr. Editor is doing a great job, I've noticed improvements over the past weeks. One thing I'd love to see is increasing the chat box size, maybe overlaying the feed in the top right to make room (I don't think anyone looks at that anyway). Or maybe some other solution so viewers can read the chat. I watch on my TV and the text is way too small to read except when you zoom in for us. Amazing work!
ive said this before in other videos but, the chat box needs to be super imposed and blown up in the bottom left of the screen. its not readable on mobile even in 1080p and its kind of annoying.
Minor point: when you plowed at 13:09, probably should have extended from 8,3,4 instead of from your 9,2,10. A little harder for your opponents to block your connect.
Blue getting 3 roads is more probable than red getting 2 roads because red is not in good terms with the rest of the folks and blue has good road material
The discussion at the end about the 50/50 for 2 players merging into 1 was really interesting. I can’t think of any way to make that deal legally binding in Catan though unfortunately.
Damn...harsh as he was, Red was seriously trying to get the table to understand the situation. He knew how close you were and was actually giving good advice to stave off your win, but no one would listen. Feels bad when someone at the table is trying to get people to work together and no one else is listening. But hey, that's good news for you, lol! GG!
as others have already said: he made the mistake very early in the game, when he said he´d rob black twice for every time he gets robbed by him... we can´t say for sure if he said that thing just out of saltiness, or if he thought this approach somehow actually is good table talk. but anyhow: seeing the way the others reacted, he should have followed up by saying: "guys i´m sorry, it obv. came out wrong. was just trying to make some friendly banter, all good. you actually made the objectively right choice there to rob from me..." or something along those lines he might have been able to turn the social game around and people might have listened to him later
In a way helping red with that settlement and city with trades before you made moves helped you because it painted him as the big villain of the table and ended up getting him robbed more
That beeing said it would prolong the game, black could win before Dylan gets road material. Or they maybe get back army. There can be a lot of stuff happening
I like the shout-out to my Monopoly strategy at the end there. I also use similar strategies in Catan when playing with my Monopoly buddies, just like what you said with trading all the cards away to your opponent based on a dice roll. However, I'll also state that these dice roll deals are NOT binding and you can just straight-up lie and not actually do what you said you would do.
Black was trying to get army before you. He didn't know you had a knight and was hoping he could get one before you. What he did was entirely reasonable from his position.
Been watching a lot of these vids, and one thing I think I havent seen explained is why it seems that it’s always better to play a knight before rolling. I can’t think of why it would be so important…
You only play the "aggressive knight" before rolling if the robber is in one of your tiles. Should that number roll, then you have removed the robber beforehand and get to keep the resources. otherwise, there is no point in playing the knight before rolling
Taking 9 2 10 AND pointing down over talking 9 11 10 doesn't seem to make any sense to me. You basically took 1 more wheat production point over 2 sheep pp which you don't have at all with your choice. That's one thing. The other is the expansion quality. With your setup you go for more ore expansion which you have a lot already. Taking 9 11 10 and pointing left increases wheat production which balances the setup better imo.
the problem with that kind of play is that blue can plow his wheat expansion. i would rather make more expansion spots that cannot be taken easily if i have a low wood and brick production
