The Secret Ingredient to EV Production?

Unlike gas cars, we need a very healthy supply of battery materials to keep EV production lines running. But what if I told you nearly 100% of our battery-grade graphite comes from China? Unlike gas cars, China is actually building and exporting Electric Vehicles, which means they very well could shift from exporting graphite to keeping it for their own production. There is a reason Elon Musk and Tesla want a North American Supply Chain, and when it comes to Graphite, there's ONE company making this dream a reality. This is the Story of Nouveau Monde Graphite, the premiere new graphite mine in Quebec Canada. They plan on being an alternative to China when it comes to building electric vehicles. They also plan on setting the standard for modern, clean, and sustainable mining. SO what exactly is graphite, and how does it factor into EVs? Why am I so excited about Nouveau Monde Graphite? This is the story of Graphite, the unsung hero in Battery Anodes, and why a shortage of this battery material would kill EVs, and it deserves a deeper dive this week on Two Bit da Vinci.

The mine owners wouldn't have to do so much environmental pre-planning before starting to dig if they did things the way they do in the U.S. That process is hugely expensive. To save those costs all they'd need to do is grease republican politicians who would let them poison the environment, leave the area as a Superfund site then claim bankruptcy and disappear with their billions before being held responsible and forced to clean it up. Sheesh, these people need to take a lesson from Exxon.

Thanks for taking this field trip to Quebec for us. It was a long video, but I learned a lot about how graphite is processed. I am really impressed with how they are trying to mine graphite without disturbing the environment. I hope that more North American businesses take advantage of this growing need for graphite so we are less reliant on China.

I have to be honest. I started skeptic and only watched it in small window. Then I had to rewind it and watch again fullscreen. Really interesting - I wonder why such environmentally friendly mining is only being pioneered. Happy to see it started, I hope the market will take a note and copy it.
@junkerzn7312

Well, I'm still a skeptic but I will note that mining lighter elements can conceivably be far-better optimized for environmental impact than mining heavier elements. There are just more options available to us when it comes to refining the lighter elements. -Matt

Very informative and extremely interesting. One problem I see is the environmental restrictions and regulations, whilst laudable, will put far higher costs on them over what it costs to produce in China. Cars built in China could have a significant advantage. Indeed, apart from the Chinese manufacturers starting to export cars to Europe now most Tesla's sold in Europe now are actually built in China. I read somewhere that electrification is likely to lead to a 1000% increase in mining operations, the worry is large portions of that will be in Africa and South America where environmental protections may not be as strict. Great video, as usual.
@TwoBitDaVinci

You make great points... I asked about this, but the belief is that eventually the value proposition will win out. Especially as regulations and protections increase in China.
@CSHarvey
@CSHarvey 2 года назад
Once demand exceeds the supply China is willing to export, the choice will become paying more or not making EV batteries. Given the massive expansion of BEVs coming this decade, and China prioritizing domestic supplies for domestic production, NA battery producers will NEED graphite from NMG.

Thanks for going to visit them. I have been entertained by Nouveau Monde with the video shorts they do and the calls for Elon to buy their graphite. I'm hesitant to invest in mining generally as I don't get the economics of the industry well enough. Also, having people see mining, like having kids see a cow or a pig (maybe not at an industrial farm...) is healthy for people. Learning about mining and living around it in northern Minnesota as a kid has made me more conservative in the things I buy and in my attempts to recycle what I do buy.

When questioning the environmental aspects of mining an important consideration is that once the materials are on the surface of the earth they can be repeatedly recycled. When the transportation network is electrified mining will be minimalized to make up for the small loses occurred in recycling. We cannot say the same for oil. Redwood recycling and Tesla are working on this now

Excellent process for mining, glad to see. There isn't the guarantee that the final processes are finished to restore the area to a more natural state. Most mining companies claim bankruptcy when they are done and once they do there is no way to make them finish taking the area to a natural state, but because of the practices put in place, if this were done in the US, at least the mining area wouldn't become a superfund site and that's a big deal. It would only be about the final clean up but not dealing with the pond that's basically untouchable because of the chemical reactions that are taking place in it and it's a toxic sludge you can't do anything with.

After farming reclaimed ground for years and knowing the ground before it was mined I can tell you it will never be the same as before for many many lifetimes. We call it advanced hydroponics for all the fertilizer we must use to come close to the yields before mining, and forget about the water holding capacity as it is very drought prone. No, forget about what the mining companies try to sell you, it will never be the same. Above ground mining kills the ground.

It's not only graphite but all other RE, metals and minerals. Mining in a 'sustainable way" in N. America, with so much burdensome law and regulation will be very, very expensive. Much better than importing (from China) but EV's and battery storage for renewable energy production will be extremely expensive. Everyone will need to drive much smaller cars and live in much smaller houses.

Put some graphite that you shave from a pencil and put it on the rubber button or try just using the pencil to put graphite on the rubber bump. You may need to redo. If you get it all 9over the circuit board it can make it go crazy so clean it and start over. Or just go buy a universal remote.

the thing about EV tech is that it is scaled up to eventually supplant ICE for all ground transportation is that it brings on a need for sources of raw materials that was never there with ICE technology. Much of the raw materials needed for EV are semi exotic to exotic and all of them require mining and difficult extraction/refining techniques. This is the Achilles Heel of EV tech. It wad okay when was just Tesla making EVs for a paltry of people in significant income brackets. But when EV is scaled out for the whole world, instead of "saving the world", it ends up destroying the environment of the Earth at a scale we've never seen the likes of before. This is why I like carbon-neutral fuels synthesized from atmospheric CO2, coupled to the ICE ground and air transportation (and refueling infrastructure) we already use - we already no we can do that tech stack for the entire world - just need to address the fuel source, which Prometheus Fuels has done. And there's no sulfur or trace heavy elements in this synth fuel so it burns very cleanly compared to petroleum-derived fuels. And very nicely, cheaply, and simply, it solves the intermittency problem of solar and wind energy sources. The synth fuel just accumulates in holding tanks until a tanker truck visits to take it to market (itself using synth fuel). This is a sustainable tech that the whole world can use without destroying the Earth's environment the way EV tech is going to do

Graphite is just carbon And we need to be pulling excess carbon out of the atmosphere So, Is anyone looking into ways to make Graphite from CO2 pulled straight from the air?

woah, that's briliant! it will be expensive to do, like synthetic graphite, but we 100% need to be looking into this!

Best way for now is to keep plants in the ocean alive to absorb it and all farming lands to leave crops and not over till to bring some back down and enriches the soil for the next batch of seed. Win win. However this would be a great idea I hope some scientist is looking into it.

Great video! I’m interested in your thoughts on vein graphite? Companies like Gratomic who are about to produce vein graphite for lithium ion batteries.

I want to know when graphene batteries will be seen in electric cars, and how many kWh per kg will they have?

2,000 tons of product... It sounds like a lot. But a very modest freight train of 20 cars or so is all it would be...

2k tons now for qualifying material to sell and help secure contracts as they reach the milestones... future yearly will be ~40-45k tons flaked, and ~40kTons coated spherical graphite ready for batteries. so ~85k tons with scalability to 200k tons/ year if the demand requires it.
