Some animals of our forests are familiar to us, others not quite as much. There is one inhabitant everyone thinks they know - but hardly anyone ever gets to see: The badger. This film follows a female badger and her two youngsters. The large martens are late developers, unsure and on shaky legs. One of them ventures out of the burrow and in doing so is in grave danger...

Badgers are carnivorans that belong to the family Melidae, they are native to Eurasia, Africa, and North America, there are over fifteen extant species within seven genera and four subfamilies Taxonomy: • Family: Melidae (Badgers) •• Subfamily: Mellivorinae (Short-Faced Badgers) ••• Genus: Mellivora (Honey Badger Lineage) •••• Species: Mellivora capensis (Honey Badger) •• Subfamily: Helictidinae (Ferret Badgers) ••• Genus: Melogale (Northern Ferret Badgers) •••• Species: Melogale moschata (Chinese Ferret Badger) •••• Species: Melogale subaurantiaca (Formosan Ferret Badger) ••• Genus: Helictis (Indochinese Ferret Badgers) •••• Species: Helictis personata (Burmese Ferret Badger) •••• Species: Helictis cucphuongensis (Vietnamese Ferret Badger) ••• Genus: Bassaritaxus (Indonesian Ferret Badgers) •••• Species: Bassaritaxus orientalis (Javan Ferret Badger) •••• Species: Bassaritaxus everetti (Bornean Ferret Badger) •• Subfamily: Melinae (Old World Badgers) ••• Genus: Arctonyx (Hog Badgers) •••• Species: Arctonyx collaris (Greater Hog Badger) •••• Species: Arctonyx albogularis (Northern Hog Badger) •••• Species: Arctonyx hoevenii (Sumatran Hog Badger) ••• Genus: Meles (Eurasian Badgers) •••• Species: Meles meles (European Badger) •••• Species: Meles canescens (Caucasian Badger) •••• Species: Meles leucurus (Asiatic Badger) •••• Species: Meles anakuma (Japanese Badger) •• Subfamily: Taxideinae (New World Badgers) ••• Genus: Taxidea (American Badger Lineage) •••• Species: Taxidea taxus (American Badger)

Badgers are actually in the family Mustelidae
@indyreno2933
@indyreno2933 6 месяцев назад
@gwentomologist, not anymore, Mustelidae is now restricted only to the weasels, ferrets, and minks, therefore the family no longer includes the skunks, stink badgers, otters, zorillas, muishund, shulang, huro, grisons, wolverine, tayra, and martens, which are all now moved to four different families, the skunks and stink badgers both now belong to the family Mephitidae, the fifteen extant species of badger are now lumped together into the family Melidae, the otters are now evaluated into the family Lutridae, and the zorillas, muishund, shulang, huro, grisons, wolverine, tayra, and martens are all now lumped together into the family Ictonychidae, similarly, Viverridae is now restricted only to the civets, while the feripaka, linsangs, oyans, genets, mongooses, falanoucs, fossa, fanaloka, and vontsiras are all no longer part of Viverridae, the feripaka is considered the only living member of the family Nandiniidae, the linsangs are now considered the only living genus of the family Prionodontidae, the oyans are now considered the only living genus of the family Poianidae, the genets are now considered the only living genus of the family Genettidae, the mongooses are now evaluated into the family Herpestidae, and the falanoucs, fossa, fanaloka, and vontsiras, which all live only in Madagascar are now lumped together into the family Eupleridae, this makes Mustelidae and Viverridae equally the most heavily reduced families of extant carnivorans.

Culling is required for many species since our ancestors killed out most of the natural predators. Why do you think the government gives deer tags and tags for killing badger? Because that's the estimated amount that would have been killed by their natural predators if they still existed.

Curious as to the temperament of Europepean badgers, compared to US wolverines; which I thought were same thing?
@calibadgerdude6082
@calibadgerdude6082 Год назад
Very different creatures. Even American Badgers are quite different than European badgers. Euros are far more social and primarily omnivorous, whereas AB and wolverine are more solitary hunters and primarily carnivorous. As a result, AB and Wolverines are much more aggressive. Euros can be aggressive, but usually it’s a defensive reaction when they’re surprised or startled, they typically won’t go after or approach other animals if they can avoid them. The others will poach prey from other animals and aggressively chase off intruders into their territory. That being said, all badgers and their wolverine kin are very strong, fearsome fighters and are typically very high on nature’s “don’t mess with” list.
