The Secret Life of Dunedin's Rare White Peacocks

This charming little neighborhood in Dunedin has a real Florida gem… peacocks!"
"Now, these peacocks aren’t originally from Florida. They actually come from South Asia-places like India and Sri Lanka. They were first brought here in the early 1900s, and now, they’ve got a whole community of their own right here in Dunedin."
"There are three main types of peacocks: the Indian blue, the green, and the white peacock, which is a rare color mutation. The most common ones you’ll see around here are the Indian blue, with their brilliant blue and green feathers. But every once in a while, you might spot a white peacock-talk about rare!"
"They’re more than just eye candy, though. Peacocks are known for their bold personalities. These birds get pretty loud-especially during mating season. Their calls can echo through the neighborhood, and trust me, you’ll hear them before you see them."
"Some of the neighbors absolutely love them. I mean, who wouldn’t want to see these beautiful birds wandering through their yard? It’s like living in a nature reserve. Others, though, aren’t as thrilled. Peacocks can get into gardens, they leave a poopy mess behind, and they’ve been known to leave their mark on a few cars-literally!"
"And they’ve been a part of this Florida neighborhood for decades now.
Every time I come through I’m hoping to catch a glimpse of these birds in the wild. It’s almost like they’ve become the unofficial mascots of this area."
"The real showstopper, though, is when a male peacock fans out his tail feathers. These guys can have up to 150 feathers in that amazing tail display, and they do it to impress the ladies. Peahens, the females, are much more subdued in color, with browns and grays. When it’s time for a male to show off, it’s like nature’s version of fireworks."
"Interestingly, peacocks are pretty adaptable. They’ve learned to live alongside people, even in urban settings. They roost in trees at night to stay safe from predators, but during the day, you’ll see them wandering the streets, totally at ease."
"They’re omnivores, meaning they’ll eat just about anything. From grains to insects, even small reptiles-if it fits in their beak, it’s on the menu. That’s part of why they’ve done so well in places like Dunedin-they’re not picky eaters!"
"So, while they might not be native to Florida, peacocks have definitely made this little corner of Dunedin their home. They bring a unique charm and a bit of wildness to this otherwise quiet neighborhood."
"If you’re ever in Pinellas County, make sure to stop by and check out these colorful characters. You never know-one might just cross your path!"

I was so surprised as well. This flock is super chill walking right down the sidewalks near dogs and they aren’t bothered. Crazy to see

They live pretty harmoniously, I was surprised to see people walking dogs right past them and the peacocks don’t care. 🤷
