Corfe Castle is one of the most important and beautiful castles in the whole of England. However what people may not know is that there are the ruins of a second castle very close to the amazing stone fortress. Situated less than a mile away are The Rings, a series of earthworks that remain from the period known as The Anarchy.
At this period, England was plunged into a deep succession crisis. The rightful heir to Henry I's throne, William Adelin had died at sea and there were two claimants, Empress Matilda and Stephen. Stephen would assume the throne, but this would cause chaos with a civil war breaking out in England. Following Matilda's supporters successfully taking Corfe Castle, Stephen would build a new castle nearby, a wooden Motte and Bailey to fire siege weapons and catapults onto Matilda's supporters in the nearby castle.
Today, The Rings are easily to miss. However join us today as we look at the remarkable story behind, 'Corfe Castle's Lost Second Castle.'
