Fun Fact: The Graphics of Monkey Island was originaly created on Amiga using Deluxe Paint and the name of main character is based on simple name "guy" and extension of files in Deluxe Paint "brush" - guy.brush - Guybrush.

@Streets! The official story as remembered by Ron Gilbert himself is this : one day Tim Schaffer asked "How do we call this Guybrush?" and Steve Purcell "Why not Guybrush?"
@heidirichter
@heidirichter 3 года назад
This is correct. on the Amiga, filename extensions are not limited to 3 characters, and when brushes are saved they default to having a .brush extension. The reason it was guy.brush is because originally you were going to be able to play as a male or a female - so a guy or a gal. So the original filename for guybrush was guy.brush and this is covered in detail in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xgqEneDNQto.html
@heidirichter
@heidirichter 3 года назад
@Streets! on the Amiga, you're not limited to 3 letters for extensions, so no, it's not bullshit. The Amiga versions of Deluxe Paint default to a .brush extension when you save a brush. You just showed everyone that you never used the Amiga version and made a foolish claim my friend. I can prove this in a video if you need proof my friend.

@@heidirichter The Amiga is not a PC! PC DOS suffered of a 3-character limitation. Only the Amiga was a computer with more than that. Please turn on Amiga or emulator and try Deluxe Paint. Or try renaming the file .

As somebody who grew up playing the EGA version with PC speakers what I'd love to see is a "The Secret of Monkey Island: Ultimate Edition" which includes all these versions with the possibility to switch from one to the other like you can in the Special Edition but also to switch between the various sound versions independently. I'd also include a new "Ultimate Edition" look that improves on the designs from the Special Edition, maybe getting even more crazy with the backgrounds (like I'd redesign the exterior of the Voodoo House to resemble the one from Escape, I'd give the Scumm Bar a new piratey sign and so forth) but bringing the look of the characters a bit closer to the original, because honestly the Special Edition look is hideous. Oh and there'd HAVE to be the sunset at the beginning, that was so unique I'm kinda mad they removed it in the VGA version. I'd also add new easter eggs, and the possibility to play the original "demo version" as well in all the graphic and sound styles.

Erm... Are you so sure about that? So, a CGA DOS PC (which are generally older/lower end PCs) is more powerful than the FM Towns (which is said to be similar to DOS CD)? I mean, the only other one without the pirate spinning was the SEGA CD version (at least from what I saw)... which probably is weaker than the old DOS PC, but that leaves us with a 50% accuracy in a sample size of 2. Not exactly an ideal way to tell if a machine is weaker or not...

i also dont like the style of the special edition. guybrush looks not good, the bridge scene at the beginning is overload with ships whyever (by the way, if you are in the kitchen of the scum bar, you should see the ships - but you dont). the darker and quiet atmosphere from the original got completely lost with that big moon.... to be fair, the special edition from monkey island 2 is better than the original.
@Jayce_Alexander
@Jayce_Alexander 3 года назад
Considering the Special Edition contains the classic version, accessible at the push of a button, I think calling it a disgrace is a massive exaggeration. Also the voice acting is top notch.
@alex.r.g
@alex.r.g 3 года назад
@@Jayce_Alexander the problem is: there is no voice over while playing the original version. and this is again a disgrace because the voice acting adds a lot to the game. good news is there is a mod for playing the original graphics with the new voice over. ( gratissaugen.de/ultimatetalkies/monkey1.html ) wish they had included that in the SE right away.

Why is the Sega CD version so dark? Is it just the way it's captured (maybe cause from a CRT?) or something inherent to the machine? Anyway, very cool video. PC Dos version the overall king, but all looked pretty good in their own way (except CGA, though they did well with the limitations, and the Mac, which looks like it has similar graphics filters as you can turn on in ScummVM, turned way up the so game is all distractingly splodgy).

I’ve played all versions. I replayed Monkey Island and transferred my saved game up to the upgrades: from CGA to VGA, from PC buzzer to Adlib to MT32, up to the remastered and speech version. Monkey Island is an icon of gaming, a true masterpiece. A bizarre gem that was made possible at a time where creativity was the priority. I encourage you to read the book about the creation of this game, when Lucasfilm Games was created. I can’t wait to play Return to Monkey Island ❤️

Do you still have the VGA upgrade pamphlet ?? Many stores wouldn't stock a VGA only game at this time, so some games came with a VGA upgrade option (this one included) that cost additional $.

I'm pretty sure the CGA version was designed to be used with a composite cable. CGA cards were able to take advantage of color fringing in composite signals to turn dithering patterns into brand new colors, similar to how the Apple II was able to get its four colors despite being monochrome. 8 Bit Guy has a video explaining it, and he specifically uses _Maniac Mansion_ as an example.
@vovkasolovev
@vovkasolovev 2 года назад
I think that initially the authors made the EGA version, then ported this graphics to CGA, Amiga, Atari, Sega. Then the EGA version was colored for VGA, which can be seen by the matching contours, while differences in the type of pattern in gradients. And distributed the VGA version to other devices. As for the Special Edition: I feel that people who are prone to drawing in the anime style worked. This did not benefit visualization. Thus, the whole game has already been drawn 3 times.

Music on DOS version are Varies since some people would still use PC Speaker, Some would be able to afford Adlib/Sound Blaster, Rarely some would use Roland MT-32 because of big price or some would rather spend on a CD drive and get a CD version which mean CD Quality music.

Since I was born in the year 2000 I never played the original versions of monkey Island before, I did eventually play through around half of the special edition on my 360 sometime back in 2016 iirc, although I didn't finish the game because somehow my save file got wiped. And I was at the point where you solved the one puzzle just to get to monkey Island, I haven't picked the game up since. I know I should pick it back up and play through it again at some point because the ride was enjoyable anyway so I wouldn't mind it, honestly though it's just gone into my backlog and has been sitting there for years, same goes with the sequel which I also want to play through at some point

I’ve played the amiga and dos version many times. I was surprised it exists an special edition. Besides the comments on how different the graphics and voice acting and all that, it stays some what true to the original. The background animations on the fireplace, water and so on. The dithering is there but on acid. In the kitchen, the lamp is not even animated. I prefer the no voice versions, on any platform, any time. When I will find Roland mt-32 you bet your ass I’m gonna replay this chunk strong grog on max volume!
