There is another link to Nimbral, Leira and Spelljamming. The moon of Toril, Selune, is actually called Leira by those that live on it. Their lands are protected by a powerful illusion that makes Selune look like a barren moon to observors on Toril. The people that live there are also paranoid, fearing that the people of Toril will want to come and take their paradise away should they learn about it. They have a large spelljammer port city and foriegners aren't allowed to leave the city to visit the rest of the moon. Nimbral is the only place on Toril that they trade or interact with. This stuff is also detailed in the Realmspace supplement you mentioned.

The old DC Forgotten Realms comics (which had cross overs with both the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons comics and the Spelljammer comics) touched on Nimbral. The comic was about the crew of a ship called the Realms Master, led by a mage named Omen from Halruaa, who was on a mission to track down dangerous artifacts and contain them in a pocket dimension where they couldn't cause any harm. The Realms Master wasn't a regular ship or a spelljammer, though: it was powered by an artifact called the astrolabe of Nimbral, which allowed the ship to teleport across the realms. There was an issue where there was a flashback to when Omen stole the astrolabe from Nimbral, and while it didn't show much, it did depict Nimbral as being a highly magical place, with guards wearing armour made from glassteel, guardian constructs, and so on. The adventuring companions who went with Omen to steal the astrolabe didn't exactly survive the magical guardian protecting it... Omen managed to place the soul of one of them in a deactivated iron golem, though, which is why the Realms Master had a golem for a first mate!

The Nimbral Illusionist kit was one of my favorite classes to play back in 2e. They had magic quicksilver eyes that gave you infravision (that edition's version of darkvision), detect magic and see invisible that were all always on and they got bonus spells based on their intelligence. The downside was that they were incredibly squishy so they were super hard to play at low levels. They had d3 hit dice and received no bonus to HP from constitution. They also could never take any sort of weapon proficiency and their magical eyesight could be dispelled to temporarily blind them. They were presented in the "Wizards and Rogues of the Realms" sourcebook for 2e if you want to look them up. Not that they have anything to do with Spelljammer in that book though, just some interesting background info.

So I remember reading a more recent Greenwood novel, I think it was Masks of Waterdeep (the one where Acq Inc's Omin Dran is made canon) and they talk about flying ships landing in the port of Waterdeep...but I wonder if those are Airships from Lantan? And I just realized that this might qualify as the most nerdy comment I've ever made in the history of YT. ;)

In second edition, Nimbral was my favorite origin for a wizard. They only had 1d3 hp with no con bonus. Wizards and Rogues of the Realms introduced “kits” to jazz up second edition classes.

Zakhara does have spelljammer ports though. They're mentioned in the Complete Spacefarer's Handbook. Qudra and Huzuz both have docks, but they don't have much in the way of trade goods that jammers might want so they aren't super popular.
@andrewshandle
@andrewshandle 2 года назад
I read though the adventure on DnDB and I must say, I don't really like how they just sort of gloss over why your 1st level character would be there. The "Adventure Hooks" section basically says "yeah, your character volunteered for some reason, so here you are no matter where you came from on the entire planet". Given that it's a digital release, having a much better intro to how Spelljamming is viewed in the FR would be nice and wouldn't take up space like it might in a printed adventure. This isn't like Lost Mines where you take a job as a guard for 10g to get you into the adventure since that makes complete sense within the world the game is set in. Your first level character being on a boat that departed from Waterdeep weeks ago and showing up at a mystical, hidden island that is a port for spaceships that 99.999% of the population doesn't know exist is a bit different. I think they really dropped the ball on the intro.

@GameSetPatch
@GameSetPatch 2 года назад
@@thebaron2277 have your players ever played the Candle Keep module? If so, you could start Spell Jammer by saying that the players were first year acolytes who accidentally got blasted into orbit when the "surprise" is revealed about that one tower. Then have them be left onboard after a band of heroes teleport away taking their only means of escape with them. Now you have low level players trying to workout arcane gadgets, managing to accidentally signal a passing spell jammer, who can then rescue them and take them to the secret island. Or you could just play a modified version of Candle Keep, and then lead into the Spelljammer setting when the players inevitably do something to trap themselves in space.

I'm new to 5e DMing, but I kind of liked the idea of telling my players to prepare characters essentially willing to sign their lives away without really knowing what they're getting into, and seeing what sorts of fish out of water were going to be learning How To Space. I think it worked out pretty well, overall.

Maybe there is navigations rules and as a spelljamer captain you have to learn and be aware of the place's rules where you intend to navigate to? Or maybe in addition to that there is control tower ( or magical tower ) controlling the traffic and telling to the captains where they can land to approach the city. All this like in real life aviation? My guess only.

3:33 This kinda discrimination against Spelljammer captains only works on a small scale. It would be a lot more trouble to cover up if an entire fleet of spell jammer ships showed up. And it's likely that your innocent average spell jammer captain WOULDN'T know this law. Imagine an entire caravan of ships coming through advertising a circus over the equivalent of loud speakers to the entire population.

The good news is that Faerun is an absolute backwater where Spelljammer is concerned. It, Oerth, and Krynn (ESPECIALLY krynn) are like the trailer parks of the multiverse. Sure, there are people who live there, and sure you MIGHT have reason to visit, but mostly it's like... Why bother? Even in hteir own Spheres there are more interesting and more welcoming worlds.

I house ruled that spelljammers could only land in certain places on planets and larger bodies. Sort of the equivalent of needing a deep enough harbor to dock without running aground in traditional sailing. This explained why ships have to land a certain distance from some cities and why the presence of spelljamming technology wouldn’t utterly transform planetary life, commerce, or warfare.
