I have honed my own razors and I've had them professionally honed but I was never happy with the results. Then I sent three of my razors to Dr Matt and I must say he does incredible work. He put the nano edge on my TI Spartacus and the razor glided over my face like a butter knife in a way that made me think "is this thing cutting at all?" and then I looked down at the blade and saw that it had mowed down 2 days of beard growth like it was nothing!!! Its a moment that makes you do a double take because your mind can't believe something this smooth could be so sharp. Dr Matt is the real thing, believe it!

Terrific information! I bought a Gold Dollar from DrMatt...sharpened, stropped and ready to go. I used it tonight for my first straight razor shave. Previously, I'd only used DE razors and shavettes. This one gave me a BBS shave, with only one small nick. The nick was my fault...not paying close attention. I have less irritation than with the shavettes and a very, VERY close shave. Thank you, DrMatt! Great guy to do business with. Very helpful and terrific about communication.

I had Dr. Matt sharpen 2 of my razors and was amazed at the difference. The shave was so comfortable, no pulling. Just sliding the blade down my face and it cut all the hairs. The nano sharpening was a great investment.

Hello Dr Matt, I just received back my Dovo razor that I had sent to you for sharpening. It is outstanding! It is uncompromisingly sharp and shaves close and smooth with a light touch. I have also initiated the use of your maintenance kit and it is simple and straight forward. From now on, anything relating to straight razor sharpening, you will be the one I come too. Thanks again.

Guys, Dr. Matt is the absolute best at getting the best edge my razor has ever had. I was finally able to completely shave my face for the first time ever with a straight razor. It's just a bit long for my tastes, but once you got to the microscope shots you pulled it together at least for me. I tend to dislike videos that have a long explanation before finally getting into the meat of the topic. I can appreciate your enthusiasm for sharpening. A nice mirrored edge is a beautiful thing to behold, and your edge was just about perfect.

Just had three razors done by Dr. Matt and he knows his stuff! All of the blades perform better than my previous best. His technique really works! Very stand-up guy, too, so do not hesitate to deal with him! Now I know what a great edge feels like, and I can correlate the feeling to what the edge actually looks like, which is great! Thanks again!

Thanks for the comments. The blade does degrade from this pristine condition with every shave, but not very much. After 3 shaves, you probably still wouldn't see much difference. After 10-12 you would which is another video idea I have and that is "Maintaining the Perfect Straight Razor Edge". Ideally, after stropping, there would be no difference but if the strop is old and dried and/or has contamination, you'll see small perpendicular lines to the edge.

Repeatable, great observation! I made this video over a year ago and ironically, instead of further refining the method, I've been playing with coticules. It's like going from an F1 car with fuel injection to a carburated Ford Pinto, and I say that lovingly. It's really a challenge and rewarding to take a rock from the earth and rub a piece of steel on it and get it to shave. I have some ideas for a video on how to obtain great repeatable edges on a coti tho...

Had my dovo la forme razor professionally sharpened twice. Shaved like a butter knife. No matter how I stropped, diamond sprayed, chromium oxided, it would not get sharp. Sent that and one other razor to dr. Matt and requested the nano finish. Matt found that the blade was twisted, and put a new edge on it. He then proceeded to put the nano finish on it. Wow! It is insanely sharp! That and I got his kit as well. Send your razors! You won't be disappointed!

The CBN in pretty much inert. Because it's in aqueous solution, it doesn't become airborn like a dry powder. Even on the nano cloth, I spritz the plate with water to get a better finished product but this also would minimize any dusting effect.

Very true sir. On this video, I was very careful to maintain these variables as fixed. The scope, the light intensity, angle of scope, angle of blade and the blade itself were all constant. I would suggest you do a search for Clay Allison from Wicked edge. He uses this technology on knives and has posted near SEM quality pictures showing the total lack of stria at the edge from the CBN on Nano. Truly remarkable.

Thanks Hector. Technically it's not diamond but CBN or cubic boron nitride. Just a touch less hard than diamond but softer edges to the particles therefore leaving a smoother, more comfortable razor edge. Diamond edges have a reputation for being harsh.

Hey Dr. Matt Cool video, being a bit of an edge nut myself, I find this very interesting, but I also have a few questions: About how long does it take to get from the CO (chromium oxide) to the .050 micron edge? How noticeable when shaving was the difference in comfort/ease of shaving between the CO and the .050 poly? And Finally how much did the nano-cloth progression set cost in the end? I am curious, because I'm considering purchasing the nano-cloth/glass/spray to perform the honing/polishing myself, and I'm sure some other viewers are curious as well. I appreciate your thoroughness, and dedication to "the perfect edge", as well as your time spent reading this if you so choose!
@drmatt357
@drmatt357 10 лет назад
It takes about 10 minutes to do all 3 nano cloth steps. The difference between CROX and the CBN/Poly is significant provided the razor is of good quality steel to hold such a fine edge and of course it was honed properly to that point. The cost I believe is around $60 per level. There is a Part 2 to this video where I go through the process.
@drmatt357
@drmatt357 12 лет назад
The sprays are around $30 for an ounce. One ounce should last you a long,long time. The plates I had are 3X11 and cost $40 each but that was kind of special order. His usual size is 3X8 which are $30. He also mounts the Nano to 1X6 aluminum (I don't know what those cost). I prefer the larger size just because it makes it faster with all that real estate.

cont...... I found that as I altered the light source and angle, the resulting striations came and went due to a cross-lighting effect. This is more pronounced with shallow lighting angles. What I have learnt to do is use a ring light (mainly used in microscopy), with low power setting, and I use this as a standard for all honing comparisons. My results.....well, there is progression, but even when using CBN 0.05, I cannot get a truly mirror finish like the one you show. Foof for thought perhaps
@gregory747

This is really great, very nice edge. Your enthusiasm for that mirror edge is really what kept me watching, like a science of microscopic feathering of metal. Would like to see the edge of double edge blades from a new package under magnification. I'm using a magnifying glass when I sharpen my razor and if it shines back at me I think it looks correct.

DON'T GIVE UP! First, tape the base to the table. Tighten the wing nut as much as you can. Also, don't forget the phillip screw that holds the forked piece that holds the scope (remove the scope to get to it). The end of the scope has to be nearly in contact with the blade. You'll get it! It is a little bit junky but it can work. Trust me, you'll get such better edges if you can see what it looks like.

Matt, I found your video interesting, and would like to inform you of a couple of findings of my own when using a microscope to examine the edge. Firstly, I use a pathologists microscope, with x10, x50, x100, x200, x500 magnifications. I find that the x100 allows sufficient clarity to really compare the results. I honed my first test razor on 1k / 3k / 8k / 20+k, then chromium oxide paddle on glass. I could see a nice progression through the run, however, I then changed the lighting angle......

Great video. I wonder at what point a super fine smooth polished edge becomes a negative. I can only imagine the stickyness and drag... so to speak between two so different surfursess . I remember the days in the car seen a port and polished heads, but these days it is known such a smooth polished chamber head created more disruptions with air flow from such a smooth surface.. probably like underbelly of a dolphin or a whale through water, makes it all easier to cut through surface differentials .. I hope you understanding my point... 😇 Im not say this is end point of course for an edge, but im sure there would be one. Wish you did a hanging hair test with that 0.005 edge, that or a shave in vid would of been awesome! Thanks for great video ...
@drmatt357
@drmatt357 5 лет назад
Thanks Gazz. The edge would destroy an HHT! But honestly, it's already probably too far for a razor's edge. It's at or approaching a DE blade which are sharp but a bit too sharp as they can leave a funny feeling on the skin. This was my first video I did a long time ago. At this point, I use mostly natural stone edges as they don't look as pretty under magnification but they feel better on my skin.
@drmatt357

They’re pretty close but the ILR is natural and gives a bit more comfort to the edge IMO. Half the price too.

When you say "top" I gather you're talking about the toe or most distal end of the razor. My question is, how did just that end get dull. This could be caused from a few things but one could be the bevel was never set correctly. If that's the case, it needs to go to a set of stones to start from the beginning. Have you tried stropping it more aggressively on just the part that's dull?

YO! guys. If you're watching this video, chances are you're into wet shaving. And, if you're into wet shaving you'll be looking for the best tools and techniques you can find for that great shave. Sorry, I can't help you with technique, but I can tell you Dr. Matt has the ability to make your straight razor the best it can be. We all search for GOOD tools. The sharper the razor the less pressure needed to cut your whiskers and less pressure equals closer shave with less razor burn and more comfort. Another great tool is "Doc's" maintenance kit which makes it easy to keep that edge indefinitely. Check it out. Great Shaving, Larry

Not aggressive sharpness is a good thing to me. I don't like the feel of a shavette. You should be stropping before every shave any way. Sounds like you're right where you should be. If you want more keeness to your blade, you need to go one more step on the stones, Norton 8k is just OK. I'd suggest a Naniwa 12k Super Stone. Check out Chef Knives To Go.

Amazing result, I think I ve done simmilar with watchmaker’s aluminium oxide but won’t this edge be spoiled after first shave?

It certainly won't look as pretty after a single use but functionally, it lasts a while.

Hey, Dr. Matt RU-vid is showing that this is a 12 year old video… Do you still use the nano cloth and recommend it..?? Because personally, I like a nice keen edge !!

LOL! It actually is 12 years old. Yes, I still use my nanocloth but I only use 0.50 micron or half micron. Can't buy the nano anymore but on my Chef Knives To Go web page use their Roo strop kit: www.chefknivestogo.com/3x8stropset4pc.html It comes with 1 micron diamond spray but ask if you can exchange that for the half micron CBN (tell him I said you could do it). There may be a slight upcharge.
