Yep! In fact, you specifically don't want these to release under tension: they are often used to attach halyards to sails and thus it's only when the sail is down and there is no tension on the halyard that it is opened.

We use the Peck & Hale Quick Release Hooks for large animal technical rescue. One string rigged to two hooks can release a panicked horse. They are pricey, but less expensive than a sweeney and has a real load rating unlike the pelican or snap hook styles. It can be pulled from the side or from below. Looks like Grand Tour used one--but yes--you need to use a very static pull cord. You don't need to pull that hard but you do need to give it a good crack, and a spongey or springy rope won't do.

The Frog you’re holding is used as a quickdraw when sport climbing. In use it would have another non-locking carabiner on the side opposite the frog connector to go to your rope. They’re novel but not used super often because they’re pretty picky about how they’ll attach to hangers which is not ideal.

1:53 that is the real reason of why I do so many things. When people ask why I did something, I usually reply, because I can. Which is true, so not a lie. But the deeper reason is probably to get the idea out of my head. Lol I'm just realizing that as I'm watching your video. Thank you for the clarity. Now back to the video...

i wish i had this video when i was in school!!! back then we didn't even have youtube or mythbusters lol. i eventually found a panic snap at a tractor supply store, but it was a LOT of searching to find something that even remotely worked for a quick release. before that, i used a nail going through two eyelets as a "release" and that method really sucks under load and often will jam during release

The kong frog is used a lot in the offshore industry for when they need to board a windmill at sea, there is a guy on the front of the boat who pushed the frog against an anchor point mounted on the base of the mill. That way the boat gets aa quick connection to the pylon and you dont need to try and clip a carabiner in a hook while the boat is going up and down on the waves. Also, they use it in sports climbing to quickly and easily attach to the bolt in hard or difficult moves in a sports climbing route. ;)

I think it was meant to go sideways like it did, the 'control' is to make it do the right thing, not continue to drive straight

Those cheap release hooks are pretty common in everything that has to do with kiting (mostly buggies). I have wrestled the traditional kitebuggy setup but also the kitesurfing system (with the steering bar). I can tell ya: pulling the pin under full load is difficult at best to near impossible when you get thrown out of the buggy and tumbling on the beach or the field. Ask me how I know... 😁😁 And btw: a 10 m² snowkite in 6-7 bft winds is able to lift a guy weighing 100 kg easily 3 meters up - and then continues to smash that said guy into the ground and drag him 50 meters over the field before he finally can reach the safety hook. That said guy was totally not me. 😜😜

@Levi_Allen

We used something very similar to the kong for rigging a slackline between two hot air balloons. So if there was an emergency, we could disconnect quickly. And also disconnect before landing. So much rad innovation comes from the sailing/nautical world
