hi matt i suffer with spinal pain evey day for the last 19 yrs due to scaffolding fallong on my back. 18 operations later and i still suffer day to day. just waiting on a operation for another operation. my point is after watching many of your video's and i do find your channel extremely helpful to learn how to sharpen my razor but the slodes you show are jist outstanding. so ive ordered a microscope cant wait to try it. and you shouldnt have to explain yourself to anyone specially n the profession your in. considering how lomg it must take you to make the video upload it and all the slides you show us . and no doubt all the time and effort you do for us newbies whos getting into strait razors.. i really do appreciate yoir time and effort your truly are a great guy to do this for us. specially knowing your doing this in your spare time thanks buddy hope your keeping well.

I can't thank Dr.Matt for the great job he did on my razor. I was able to completely shave for the very first time with a straight razor and it was really awesome. I kept the spine close to my face and away I went. Still learning how to to it, including making the funny looking shaving faces, but extremely happy that I sent my razor to the good doctor. Thanks again Dr.Matt.

I think that most beginner sharpeners make most, if not all the mistakes you have indicated in your very good video - inclusive of myself! You have provided a very informative insight here. Thank you very much. :)

Since watching this video, I got a microbrite plus pocket microscope, and now I'm getting the best and smoothest shaves ever! Takes some of the guess work out of it! Thanks again!

Keep up the great work, I customize straight razors for a hobby and have used many of your suggestion to trouble shoot problems I've had with getting that ultimate edge, thanks.

Doctor Matt is the real deal! If he can make a Gold Dollar shave like a dream, then he can sharpen just about anything. I sharpen most of my own razors but when I get stuck, I go to the Doc...he made a 10mm Kamisori trimmer shave like Tosuke intended...also an old TI. I tried sharpening a Gold Dollar and took it down to an 800 grit then up to 12000 before I was able to cut hair...probably won't use it until the Doc gets his hands on it. He is the "go to" for sharpening.

I've watched 3 of your video's. This one being the last. I did several hours of RU-vid research before attempting to hone my first straight razor. You have certainly given us all a mark to shoot for. Thank you.

I'm the Australian, that improvised your nano cloth. If you can recall 2 months ago, I sent you an email after your opinion. Just to let your followers know, Matts nanocloth is ACE. I have my adaptation and 100 strokes it's gleaming. I don't want to publicly tell my adaptation, as Dr Matt & Ken Schwartz deserve their brilliant edge improver.

Your video is really helpful , especially the interpretation of the edge photos . I wonder of a concave bevel is better ?

Dr. Matt Nailed it. If the supposed professionals refused to look at microscope pictures is comparable to a Doctor refusing to look at the microscope blood analysis of a sick patient!

Very interesting video thanks. May I ask what causes rat bites. I found small ones appearing as I was sharpening. Was I pressing to hard or would it be micro corrosion being revealed, as it is an old razor? Thanks

Good question James. I made this video several years ago and since then, I sharpened quite a bit more razors and knives and have a high resolution wicked powerful microscope and... I still don’t know exactly why it happens. I think it can be many things and a couple you have stated and that is technique, the other being crummy steel be it corroded or just poor metallurgy(think some of the modern German steel razors) or just a bad stone.

Dr. Matt is correct. If your bevel is all scratch in different directions, you will never get a good edge. If you get a nice pattern you have a much better possibility of good edge. He points out the reason why you cannot get a sharp edge, the stone surface, angle of sharpening, etc. Guys his diamond spray makes miracles in the edge!

Dr. Matt, is there any chance you could make a video where you demonstrate sharpening a razor?

I generally go a while between lapping my stones. I know they get dished out but I've been trained to lift up just ever so slightly till the very edge is being ground how i like. It works well for me and keeps me sharpening more often than planing my stones. however I do more knives than razors and i would probably plane my stones more often if i sharpened more of them.

Nice video. One one blade you mentioned something that you called "a rat bite". What exactly do you do to get that out? Do you take the whole edge down? Thanks.
