“Acrylics are harder than oils”….I hear you! The other thing is I’ve noticed about oils, other than the texture you mentioned, is they seem to have a greater pigment load. They just seem more opaque. Thin layers of acrylic can be streaky but I can often get good coverage with oils in one layer.

Really nice presentation. A wrinkle to try: you can mix acrylic paints and mediums into water-mixable oils as perhaps a third layer lying between straight acrylic and full-on conventional oils. You don't lose the deep ("jewel-like", optically rich) effect of oils. Using acrylic mediums rather than pigmented acrylic paint for this 3rd type of oil & water mix can build physical texture or create interesting glazes. Is the acrylic + water-mixable mélange archival? Dunno. Don't care. I'm 82 and am unlikely to produce any museum or investment pieces.

Very interesting! How long do you wait after applying the acrylic paint before you use the oils? Would you describe your painting as mixed media or simply an oil painting?😅
