Hey Peachy, if you want to stop the bleeding through of a colour when masking, just put a layer or the original paint on the edge of the tape and then once its dried then do the new colour. learnt this when decorating the living room
Professional tips for casual painters. Love that comment section is supportive advice as well. Love how Peachy can show techniques that make things pop, but then shows that through happy natural accidents it can still look pro. “Aces”
A good tip to manage mask bleed is to first go along thr edge of your mask with the base colour first. Really handy if you want sharp mask lines with minimal clean up
Like most Peachy videos I kind of knew about 90% of the techniques shown, it’s the 10% of Peachy magic I stay around for. Spare gaming tokens used as circular masks, genius!
I feel like I could pick up a model and do this right now, not one day when I'm a top painter. Thank you for giving me an achievable task! I want to paint along
I've been thinking about doing some Iron Warriors for ages and the thing that's always put me off has been doing the hazard stripes, this has given me the inspiration to try them out now.
I've been using masking tape for years, and sponging to do chipping. I would never have thought to use sponging to do the base colours. Definitely going to try it out next time. You are so right, when I use a brush there is a bit of paint running. Ok you asked for tips, and here's mine (though it is more a general terrain tip than a marking tip): when you have done all your markings and base colours on terrain pieces, give it a wash of sepia and earthshade (3 to 1 ratio), then use a piece of paper towel and blot of the wash on the raised areas, leaving the wash in the recesses. It can also work on normal minis as well. Especially if you are aiming for speed. Hope it helps someone. Thanks Mr Peach. Keep up the good work.
Great video Peachy! Also really love that you talked about bleed. Other RU-vidrs never show that so I’ve always thought that I’m alone in getting that.
Very timely, was just thinking about how to do markings for my Leagues of Votann, I often find using a sponge for weathering and then filling in with a darker colour to be a nice way to get some randomness while still adding some depth
Don't know what it is about them but the Shatterpoint Models are so cool to paint. I've been following your PP guide to paint my boxset and I love them. Now I can try some markings on my troopers. More Shatterpoint guides, please. Loving the new channel Peach❤
Awesome video Peachy. Love the chipping to hide mistakes technique, been using myself for years and it really does help make free handing so much easier and personal I think it makes it look more realistic and awesome.
Peachlings 😊 freehanding details is still a daunting task, I did a little bit when I was painting my ultramarines and a little when I painted runtherd I did the checkers around his waistband and his helmet, I'm painting some Ork Boyz at the moment so I have plenty of practice coming up
For neat chevrons, cover the area in strips of masking tape and then remove alternate strips of tape. Paint the areas black - boom, evenly spaced chevrons.
Great video, I’m not really brave enough to do a lot of fancy stuff but I wanna give it a go. I love the name “peachlings” haha. To avoid bleed I heard you can re-paint the base colour over the top of the tape, it’ll fill in the gap. So paint red, tape, red on the tape edge, it’ll be sealed up and stop bleeding. Not a big issue for small things but might help with large important pieces!
That was great watching you do the free hand chequer markings i was swearing a lot doing my space marines!! Now i don’t feel so bad as you went threw the same process before they came together!! Good video and a lot of great tips 😊
@@PeachyTips thats the problem with a lot of social media the experts just want you to be awestruck rather then showing you that its not easy for them either!! You encouraging and inspiring people to have a go!! That we need more of 😊 But you picked the two most unforgiving colours to do it with tho red and yellow 😂😂😂
Great vid!, to help with bleed on masking stick the tape down and paint a layer of the previous colour in this case red, it will bleed and block the edges of the tape then once dry when you do,the next colour in this one yellow there’s no gap due to the red and bleed will be less, hope this helps
Oh this is perfect. I’m thinking I’ll do a far too intense job on a box of stormcast for the next edition and was thinking about all the checks and markings I could do.
Nice tutorial! To avoid having paint bleeding under the masking tape (any masking tape, even Tamiya) paint/sponge/spray clear coat first, even just painting lahmian medium will help.
Love this! I'm Okay -ish at simpler free hand stuff like a cross or quartered shield design on single characters if I take my time, but I am hoping to do a little medieval warband using Perry's War of the Roses foot knights so these tips are super handy. Whenever I think about doing something tricky like free hand and feel put off I always try to keep in mind "it's just paint - it goes on and it can come off or be covered if need be". Admittedly my freehand attempts aren't always the best - but I get a bit better with every attempt! The clone trooper markings were ace!
I've been doing epic white scar markings like saw tooth and lightning patterns. I've found dot to dot helpful here before sketching the lines - and using features on the vehicle and the previous dots as placement guides to get consistent patterns
I always use my untrustworthy eye for markings, is works surprisingly often. Other than that, using a pencil or similar to lightly sketch out your marking and then paint over it is also a nice trick. Most of us are more comfortable using a pen or pencil than a brush so sketching like that gives me fairly accurate designs since it becomes more "paint within the lines" and less "freehanding and hoping it works." :)
Fun fact: Tamiya sells a masking tape designed to support curves. It's far more flexible than normal tape, making it worse for straight lines, but for, say, a space marine pauldron, or the hood of an armiger, it's pretty great. Good luck with the lamenters' heart though.
Another masking tape bleed fix: paint one color, put your tape down, then paint the edges of the tape line with the original color. This seals up the seam, and allows a crisp second color. I got this tip from my fiancé who watches HGTV shows and it works! Zero bleed.
I don't know about that specific masking tape, but many painters tapes are supposed to be wetted before painting. The water causes the glue to expand and fill in the gaps to prevent the bleed.
Good video, one thing I have tried, to varying success is cutting card logos and then airbrushing the basic shape and tidying up, it would work just as well with a sponge. How hows the Peach Fuzz stand up or the fuzzes?
If you want to avoid bleeding colors underneath the masking tape, put a thin layer of matt medium down first. It will act like a barrier that will block paint from going under the tape!
if you want a nice solid clean like with the masking tape here's the pro tip to avoid bleeding: paint the shield red, apply your tape, paint the edge of the tape the same red, then when its dry paint the yellow and when you peel, it will be a nice solid line with no bleed because the red over the line of tape will bleed and seal it so the yellow doesn't bleed ;)
Lovely video. When doing cheverons then do the full aera with the strips and then take out every other one and you got the same thickness on all the cheverons
I’ve found it easier to apply the light colour first, let it dry, apply masking then put the darker colour over the top. You get less bleeding because you apply less paint.
I was just curious, what do you use for your video set up? Do you have any cameras/lights you'd recommend and what do you use to position your camera? I'd be interested in making some videos and yours look great!
They are, though I suspect it was my thinning down rather than the paints themselves, I’ve used them a little bit now, and I’m finding them to cover well enough….the metallics are great
If anyone remembers the classic Minotaurs colour scheme - this guide would be a godsend, if you had a literal deathwish. Quartered hazard stripes of red and yellow is something I really want to try, but certainly not for a full army! 😂
