To determine the size of a cone blank, you need to measure the desired final cone's base diameter and height, then use the Pythagorean theorem to calculate the slant height which is crucial for determining the size of the cone blank; you can then use the slant height and base circumference to calculate the sector angle needed to create the cone pattern on a flat sheet material. Key steps: Measure the desired cone dimensions: Base diameter (D): The diameter of the cone's base circle. Height (H): The vertical distance from the cone's apex to the center of its base. Calculate the base radius (r): r = D / 2 Calculate the slant height (L): Use the Pythagorean theorem: `L = √(r² + H²) ` Calculate the circumference of the base circle: Circumference = 2πr Determine the sector angle for the cone pattern: Sector angle (θ) = (Circumference / L) * 360° To create the cone blank pattern: Draw a circle with radius equal to the slant height (L) on your material. Mark off the sector angle (θ) on the circle. Cut out the sector to create your cone blank. Important considerations: Material allowance: Depending on the material and construction method, you might need to add seam allowances to your cone blank calculations. Precision: Accurate measurements are crucial for a well-fitting cone.

I’m new to rolling so, I’ve been trying to roll Inconel 625 19” long by .080 thick, big side is 11” od small side is 3.5” od. We have tried everything and can’t get a good part. Is it even possible?

Hey @timescott5647, that is going to be hard to do but I think would be possible depending on what roll you have. I would be happy to discuss it with you on a phone call and I can even get an engineer on the line if need be. You can give me a call at (606) 787-8474

So I looked into this a little more. The spring back is an issue. So in other words if you wrap the minor diameter right around the top roll how much is it going to open up once you take the pressure off. It looks like your material might be in the 90ksi yield strength range I'm not exactly sure. I would figure that would spring open to 1.5 - 2 X the diameter of the top roll meaning to get a minor diameter of 3.5" you will need like a 2" diameter top roll. But in order to roll cones you can only grip the outside diameter of the material therefore limiting the torque and so you can figure when rolling cones you can only roll about half the capacity that you could roll a cylinder shape. All that to say I really doubt your roll has the capacity to roll that cone and that you will need a designated cone roll with tapered rolls in order to achieve a good part. I would still be available to chat about it if you want.
