I would dip the shoes 👞 and boots 👢upside down so the soles don't get dyed. You can also spray a waterproof shoe protector on the part of the shoes you dont want to dye since Vaseline is so greasy. Spray the inside of the fabric with dye sealer as well to prevent it from rubbing off on socks and skin. Use the right fabric dye and follow directions. They now have fabric dye pens and brushes, so you can just color by hand.
Awesome job with this, Yoda. I couldn't help but giggle at the fabulous foot model poses at the end because I just rewatched the episode of The Nanny where there's an end credit scene of Fran foot modeling. This is in my how-to playlist now. 👍
I really like that tip about bleaching some old converse. I think I'm gonna have to do that so i can practice dying before I'd dye the brand new white converse I just bought
I hope this works for me, Vaseline and drying them upside down we’re some things that saved me from ruining my sneakers… I have some vans I’ll test out with first but I had some diesel Canvas sneakers that I messed up while cleaning the bottoms with soft scrub lmao and it left it an un even acid wash, I suppose I should bleach it all first to get it even or maybe going dark black will work too … tis why I’m going to try with old vans 🤣
I tried you method with stained, white canvas keds. Wanted them dyed black. The shoes turned out a sort of faded dark denim which looks kind of good. Also, the sides of the soles stained. However, I think your method is good for brand new white keds. Although I thoroughly washed and let the shoes dry, I think they had something oily on them that would never washout. Canvas is such a tight weave, that they are nearly impossible to get thoroughly cleaned, grease free. The oil is going to resist the dye. Also, you dipped your shoes canvas side down so the Vaseline was not submerged in the soap long enough to wash off. Vaseline will eventually wash off with any soapy water and to get a nice, deep color you have to soak the shoes submerged in the dye for 10-20 minutes. Lastly, I will NEVER buy white canvas shoes again!
thanks for the tip, I need one after my skechers shoes got a few tiny hole due to a welding slug and there are black marks which i cant remove even after scrubbing it. Dying it black my seems the only logical solution left.
Your video is soo easy to follow. I ran into a problem after dying my converse navy. The canvas came out perfect but the rubber was dyed blue in spot and I've tried everything to get it off. Can I paint on the rubber with Angelus Paint or should I use Pasco Paint Marker? Any suggestions?? Thx
Thank you for this video, it was by far the most helpful Rit shoe dyeing video on here. Really concise and detailed. The only problem I had that was that the Vaseline on the soles came off in the dye bath and my soles got stained anyway 😭 Maybe because the dye bath was soapy and it washed off (or because I left my shoes soaking for way longer than you did in the video). I'm gonna try the Magic Eraser + acetone trick and see if it helps, but either way, great video!
Thanks!! That’s really weird that the Vaseline came off. I had to wipe mine down really well to clean it off after they were done. Hopefully it didn’t stain too bad.
@@dohdfkwudbxkiw Unfortunately it didn't! It kinda comes off if you scrub super hard but I think it would take me literally hours to scrub away all of it. I'm thinking about throwing them in the washing machine and seeing if it helps because the dye came out a bit darker than I wanted anyway,
If you don’t cover the sole with Vaseline, will it adequately pick up the dye to look uniform with the canvas? Or will it be patchy etc? I’m thinking of dying white shoes black and will want the sole black too
I tried with vaseline but the heat of the dye bath melted it off and the soles got dyed. I had way better luck using liquid latex. It’s takes some drying time but it protects the sole way better.
I just tried this per your recommendation, however I still had some issues with the liquid latex peeling off in the hot dye bath. But I guess there’s always a magic eraser and acetone. Hope they aren’t ruined.
You probably lost a lot of color when you soaked them. Rinse with cold water gradually up to hot water then when the water runs clear, then wash them with soap.
@@TheL0ngGeorge yes you need to start rinsing with cold water then when the water starts to run clear each time gradually go up to warm water then hot water and then finish off with a cold rinse before washing them.
Nice job. Could you please tell me which volume measurement you are using? The British or the USA? And in metric terms, how many liters should I use to achieve the same good result? Thanks.
Hi I have a pink nike running shoes in pink. I would love to dye it black so it has more diversity... My country only has Canvas Black Dye. WIll that work? Also will it fade when washed or rained on? Thank you!!
"You don't know what the salt is used for"? It serves more than one purpose but mainly it's an abrasive and helps to remove any residue it's attached to the stainless steel of your sink.
Using soap and hot water as well would wash off the Vaseline layer or at least degrade it enough. Probably have to use a thermometer to get the right temperature for the the dye to be effective but not too hot to affect the Vaseline.
I think it would be a similar process but you’d have to know if the fabric is synthetic because that uses a different type of dye. Not sure what it would do to the letters though.
I have a wide foot and normally wear a men's size 10.5 but haven't been able to find any men's all black Keds in my size used or new old stock and I think I'm going to settle for women's Champions but not sure of sizing difference. Anybody got info?
These are size 11 and they shrunk a bit when they dried, so they're a bit tight on me. They'd probably stretch back out over time but I ended up getting some black Vans in the meantime. If you wanna buy these off me, you totally can. Could always dye em black.
If there's parts of the canvas I don't want dyed, will putting Vaseline on canvas work to prevent from dying? I don't want to dye the 3 stripes on my canvas Adidas.
I tried some electrical tape on the soles of some espadrilles....it did not work very well. Funny, I was going to try Vaseline. I wish I would have seen this video first. Boy is this video thorough.
I wouldn’t think so, but I can’t say for sure. It doesn’t dye the thread because it’s synthetic fiber, so I assume plastic wouldn’t dye at all. No guarantee though!
They definitely do shrink initially. Hey should eventually stretch back out though. Tbh I never ended up wearing these much but a friend tells me they stretch back out. Keep it in mind though for sure.
Buff sand the rubber with fine grit; then spray with an adhesion promoter (Krylon/Bullseye) THEN paint.. then clear coat with Krylon flat acrylic spray. Maybe that'll work. Maybe.
I only tried it once and I just dumped a ton of bleach in a tub of water and left it over night outside. I think I used the same tub that’s in the video and used like half the jug of bleach. I don’t know if it was right but it worked. Haha
Did not work for me. The rubber around is all messed up with dye even with the vasoline. I tried pain thinner then bleach pen. Nothing removed the dye on the white rubber :-(((((
@@altoidyoda Yes Vaseline. I did fix the mess with 3 coats of Sharpie metallic silver permanent ink marker, which looks very nice with the navy blue. Not sure how long it will last but I'll just keep reapplying if needed. Thanks.
So.... I tried this and my shoes are pretty much ruined. Idk where I went wrong. I have a pair of all white vans, around the ankle they turned yellow after washing and tried the paper towel trick, still were yellow. I saw this video and said what the heck, right? I used the equate Vaseline (probably should have used the original) and the soles got dyed. I used black rit dye btw.... since the, they have dried and the soles are an ugly purple-ish color and the black canvas just looks faded and ugly and honestly they just look old asf! I honestly don't know what I did wrong. But I bought some leather shoe paint (black). Gonna try and fix the soles with that. Hopefully, they'll look somewhat decent, and I guess I'll just wear them to work 🤷♀️ (my shoes get ruined there, so wth 🙃).
Okay I guess I thought about it some more in my sleep and woke up to say that you missed a huge comedic opportunity by not replacing your end music with Sarah McLachlan's "Angel" and taking a hard turn with the tone right at the end. Okkaayyybbyyyeeee
@@justagirlsd3000 oh. I I've seen some ppl just use hot water, salt and dye the and leave it for a bit. Would that be ok? I'm asking because I can't seem to find the other product used in this video.
@@lilmario0 I have never used Rit to dye anything. I use procion dyes and soak everything in soda ash before dying to set the dye. My friend asked me to dye some shoes but I’ve never done any before. These turned out nice.
I used the jelly before on my vans and it didn’t work, is it because I put them in there for to long? And it just melted the jelly all off and my rubber part was stained
Hmmm... I'm not sure, tbh. It seems like it would be hard for the oily vaseline to go away unless it's wiped with something. It doesn't really dissolve in water. Was it the wrong kind or something? You can use a Mr. Clean magic eraser to get as much of the staining off as possible.
@@altoidyoda They turned out pretty good, they are a dark gray and I followed your video and the Vaseline worked a lot better this time and the magic eraser worked so well!! Thank you again and this video helped a lot!
Why do people use RIT dye. Stop it! Do yourselves a favor and buy procion powder dye. It's not even a debate, procion dye is far superior. It's cheaper, less environmentaly harmful, way more vibrant, comes in more colors, is more customizable, and the dye actually bonds with the fiber.
