It was 1999...i was 12. I rented RE2 for the N64. Played 10 minutes and was traumatized and am only recently conquering the resident evil games in my late 30's.
Though i am not a fan of the RE games, the way you shed light on the thought process of the developers, the steady evolution of the games, and the overall formula that kept them THE standard in genre was quite refreshing. Makes me really appreciate the games though i have never really played them myself. Good job! Keep em coming!
You were five years old, alone at night, playing a zombie game, with tank controls, on your own? And you had an adolescent brain? Are you mixing memories or just fudging dates? I have two kids, one is currently five and one was five four years ago, I really just can't imagine a universe where you were playing RE2 on your own, alone at night, at five (and adolescent means teenaged). Both of my kids srarted playing 2D games and less complex 3D games around 2, and by five were still just barely wrapping their heads around 3D movement. Great video otherwise, but that part is kinda nonsense.
Haha I appreciate it brother! I definitely fudged the dates. It was actually a burned copy of RE2 that belonged to my mom's friend. I remember being scared she would catch me playing it, so I was still much too young 😅
resident evil is really an experience . the setting is so immersive the amount of details for every room and corridor and alley and desk is impressive despite the scales being small these small map felt more alive and packed with details than big budget high graphics modern titles . rather than having only the visuals do the talking the devs combined the gameplay with the horror by having you worry about future encounters.the slow movement and the disempowering nature combined with the scarce resources completed the experience . this game reflected that era when creative freedom is given to real artists and their vision as they were were allowed to flourish even the controls of each game felt unique resi had that '' semi anime '' artstyle that blurred the line between reality and imagination everything was made with effort to make from the custom soundtracks to the menus and eastereggs i just wished the city was more explorable and there was more interactibility with the objects around in puzzling your way out of trouble.. and that was what i was actually hoping for future installments sadly after resi4 it turned into a soulles cinematic shooter .. resi7 went back to the root a bit but it had too many cutscenes and quicktime events and felt like those early youtube jumpscare videos ut was overall good despite the tone being off a bit

I haven't followed RE as much but over the spam of 30 years RE has always been there at some point, my introduction was also RE 2 when I was around 11, me and a friend played for days trying to survive the police station, I'll never forget when he fell off his chair scared after the licker jump scare inside the interrogation room! Years later I managed to play RE 1 and RE 4, amazing games in their own right, never got to play RE 3 or the spin offs due to never owning a console past the N64 but now days I have fond memories of playing RE 5 and 6, yes those two, for different reasons though, those two games make for an amazing co op experience with a friend, story takes a backseat and the name of the game is just having a good time. I've yet to play 7 and 8 but I'm glad RE is popular again, just wish the timeline didn't jump so far...
You definitely gotta play either the original RE3 or remake asap! My personal favorite on the classic console, but unfortunately the remake is missing a lot of content from the original. Still a very fun game though!

My 1st encounter with RE was the demo for RE2 when i was 8. Like you it left me feeling something id never felt with a game before. I went and got the 1st game while waiting for 2 to come out and I've been in love with the series since. I miss the days of fixed cameras
Demos were so amazing back in those days. I remember playing the demo over and over as well 😅 But hopefully they will pay homage to the fixed cameras in some of the new releases!
RE7 got me into the series, and I’ve beaten Village and the remakes of 1, 2, and 3. Right now I’m on the original RE4, which I think might be my favorite!

You and I both started with RE2. You were younger than me because I was 8 in 1997, and I had a half brother who I barely knew to introduce me to it. People can't see it with the same eyes we saw it with back then. It was amazing looking at that time. RE4 was great, but it was a heavy departure. I enjoyed it, but it didn't feel like 1-3 at all and it lost it's true horror feel. At the time of RE4 I hadn't played Code Veronica, but now I can see that was the first true departure in many ways. Many people hate RE-0, and the leech character is a bit much. But overall RE-0 feels like 1-3.
I have to agree! It definitely was the innovator of horror at the time, and RE0 is personally one of my faves. Not sure why so many people hate on it 😅
@@Vynsent I think the implementation of the 2 character mechanic, and the removal of the item box is the biggest issue. Especially the item box aspect which was removed to add a dynamic to the dual character model. Leaving the items on the floor becomes challenging when you need to pick them back up.
Haha u guys are brave. I was 11 in 97 and scared outta my mind haha. I played resident evil directors cuz around that time. Must’ve been 97 cuz I remember playing ff7 around the same time. That was a magical year. Star Wars special edition was in theaters that year too.
@@sirownzalotgaming3025 I saw that in theaters too. I think I lied about not getting detention to be able to go, and got caught later. Worth it obviously. But yeah RE & FF7, and Parasite Eve. Played all of those around 98 99 when I was 9/10. As a kid the puzzles were also difficult to complete. It took me a few years to finish FF7 & RE. Oh Silent Hill was another big title.
