You ever think about charging her rent to teach her the responsibility of paying payments but save the money in a savings account until she's 25 and give her the money back for a down payment on land or home

I like the zero grout. Our 40 ish yo daughter lives with us. We are retired and her presence is a blessing. We have health issues.

We did what you guys did with our kids, built a place for our kids until they left the nest, the problem was this, they had a hard time going from something super sweet and new to something not so! Real life as they called it! LOL .... We have land as well and built two homes on it, our son & his family live in one of em, they do pay us rent, help out with snow removal etc, we also own another piece of land about half mile away and our daughter lives on with her RV, it has full hookups, she pay rent as well. The other daughter lives in the city with her family, they own their home .... We have no debt, we got out debt 26 years ago stay out, that has brought a lot peace.

I wouldn’t be surprised if your #1 son ends up building his own tiny home on the land. You have all the tools.

We did some similar but the opposite end of the life cycle. My husband and I bought our property specifically so my 80 year old mother could build her own 1,200 sqft barndominium just behind our house. It perfect for her to age gracefully, independent and is so much better for us to have her close for any of her needs as they arrive in the future. When mom is eventually gone it can serve us as we grow old. She loves having her own home and space but also the peace of mind we are close. What you are doing works for all generations! God Bless!

My mom used to tell us “these are the good ole days” I didn’t understand what she was saying at the time and then she passed and we were talking about all her wonderful sayings and when I got to that one I bawled. She was right and I try to live by that now. ♥️🙏🏼♥️

With the housing issues in the world today, sometimes you just have to do things you wouldn't ordinarily do to protect your families future. So many homeless people and so many young people priced out of buying their own homes (or even renting) dont have the money to provide shelter for themselves. We all need to do what we can to prepare for the families' future while also taking care of our loved ones now. Many of us know "love one another as I have loved you", but there's more: "love your neighbor as yourself". We really are "our brothers' keeper".❤

Such a great plan to do a "soft launch" for your kids. Our four children were encouraged to take their time to move out, and we spent two years helping them find a good starter home that they purchased on their own, renovated, and lived in for several years before selling it for more than double the purchase price. The money they earned has helped them all with their own solo homes. We name our homes, and this one was named "The Snuggery" from a Dickens novel they loved. It was their own version of higher learning and it served them well. Blessings to your family as you move them into the world of adulthood.

In 1970 I graduated from university and moved back home with a local job as a teacher. My parents charged rent and that was fine…but they actually saved it to use for a wedding ….that was a blessing g for us all !!! Love your idea…times are really trying now …great decision on your part!!! You made your big move at the perfect time as things are changing dramatically now!! God bless!!❤

We built on the back of our house but instead of our son living in it my husband and I are as our son and his wife and three children live in our house. They wanted to save up to buy their own home but couldn’t afford to rent and save at the same time. It is getting harder and harder for first home buyers to buy a home here in New Zealand as prices are skyrocketing and rent prices are doing the same. It’s awesome having our family living with us. We get to see our grandchildren growing up.

The concept of the family compound is a good one.There are so many advantages, shared cost, security, child care, elder care. The list could go on and on.

We are a multi-generational family living in a suburban house. My daughter (single mom) and her 14 year old have bedrooms and bath in the front of the house; I have the primary suite at the back of the house; and the 22 year old lives in an apartment above the garage. We've been in this house for 12 years and rented out the garage apartment until the oldest was ready to move up there. It has worked well for us.

Melissa, you are so right about them not staying little forever. I blinked and now I have grandchildren - I blinked again and the oldest graduated high school. Trying hard not to blink again for a long time... As much as wanting to enjoy them and not get any older myself...

And the older you get it seems the years fly by. Enjoy every day, every child and grandchild to come. I pray one or two of your kids decides to build close by. It's wonderful having them near you. My daughter, son in law and their boys have lived just on the other side of the highway from us and we've been able to interact thru the years. What a blessing.

You two did a great job on the tile. I talked to a young man in an area close to your state and he had a rent increase of $500 a month. Your children will be so fortunate to have this apartment. The puppy is growing and so cute!!

We have a triplex, 1bdr/1bath for Gparents, , , 2bdr/1bath for daughter's family, . 3bdr/2bath for son's family. It has worked out fantastically for all. Generational housing is heaven.

I installed the same shelf for my laundry room. They hold a lot more weight though, i made sure that the 2 ends were in the studs and the middle uses a strong anchor. Generational housing is what most rural families have always done.❤

Turned out beautiful!!! You are awesome parents. I have 2 boys and 2 girls. All had jobs at 16. Boys into the Army at 18, my girls continued working and had apartments with significant others til married. I had my first son at 16, my daughter at 19, 2nd daughter at 25 and my 31. My youngest will be 27 on the 24th. Most of the girls I went to a special pregnant with babies school, their kids continued and had kids at 16 or 17. I drummed into my kids the importance of enjoying being young and free. I didn’t have my first grandson til I was 50!! That was from my oldest son. Now I have 3 beautiful grand babies from 3 of my kids (ages 7,2 and 1 on the 27th). Now that I’m retired from dispatching from L.E. I get to spend 3 days a week with my youngest grandson, just like I did with my first even tho I was working 12 hour shifts then. I do it until they reach preschool. I LOVE the bond I have with them. Amazing… when I moved out at 17 I did not get a fork, a glas or plate from my parents… now 50 I managed many storms and am grateful for every single day❤🎉😂

My husband and I did the same thing . We bought land 9 yrs ago to homestead. At that time our two boys were 12/14 as time went by and we were building. We realized it was better to build our place for us , and build them a separate place to live in to have their own space . It was the. EST decision we ever made . Especially with rent and the current economy. We did the same they pay a low rent , to learn responsibility and to help with utilities. It had been a blessing . And they love it. More and more families are doing this . I think it’s great ! And should be the new norm.

I also have a puppy. He is a 7 lbs chihuahua named Alfred. He is around your puppy’s age. He was given a brand new KONG bed. It’s supposed to be indistinguishable. He had it a week and chewed a hole in the corner. It’s been fixed with a canvas patch. He already within 20 minutes had the patch 1/4th of the way off. Puppies are crazy

Helpful hint, think about adding a clear plexi glass splash guard behind stove to catch any splatters from cooking. It has really helped me in keeping my kitchen clean and new looking. Just install with a couple of clips, easy peasy!

Fellow retired LEO here. For your wire shelves in the closet, make sure that the ends of the shelf supports that attach to the shelf are placed between a wire on the lip of the shelf. The ends of the support are designed like a “fork” with a split in the middle to tie into the lip of the shelf. No further “Souza” engineering needed and those shelves will be sturdy. Love your journey!.

I even freeze the leftover leftovers. I don't like waste. At all. Have a wonderful weekend. ❤ My grandmother kept an ice cream bucket in the freezer for all the leftover veg thst isn't enough by itself, even a handfull of peas went in there. Then when she made soup in the winter, she had it without opening up more jarred veg.

You did the closet shelf bracing wrong. The part that hooks around the rod (where you zip tied) should be on the top rod and the 'fork' should straddle the vertical wire. This way, it can't push down because it all sort of interlocks w/ down pressure. It doesn't look it, but they can hold a lot of weight!

The bracket goes to the top rail, positioned so that one of the wires sits in the grove. That way it can’t be pushed up.

We had a chihuahua when we were building our log home. You could no leave anything, tool plumbing parts or anything he could pickup laying around or he would pick it up and go off with them you were having to search all outside to try to find it. Love your little fur man. If I was not old I would have one of those

Here is my solution to cover the stove vent. Make a lightweight frame to go around everything and them use the same tile as the backsplash to cover it. It will look like a chimney.

I think that would be neat if all your kids built a house on your property. Keep the family close and together, help each other out. Plus when the grand children enter the picture they are just a quick walk away.

It all matches so well. My parents took six years to build their home while working full-time jobs and while living in my grandparent's house. It can be done. Growing up, I always watched building shows with my mom. You both are doing a great job.
