In an old video, this channel said N. Korea was permanently out of the Olympics because the IOC had a new rule where all athletes had to be available 24/7 for testing along with their exact locations. Did the DPRK make a deal with the IOC for an exception? If so, good. The Olympics is not the same without North Korean athletes. 🤔
@@SupremeMaster-he4rc North Korea are not allowed to compete at this Olympic Games because they were not exposed to the same length of drug testing as the other eligible athletes.
No offense but your wife also isn’t an Olympic athlete. These women train stupid hard every day. On top of that they have really good genetics for strength. Almost no one who isn’t an Olympic level athlete is going to be able to match their lifts.
the end with the story with one of the NK lifters watching WH videos was neat to hear about and also sad. I can not imagine living in the state that they do and being sheltered from the rest of the world.
There are a few things those people of DPRK would be better off not knowing. We are living in such absurd times right now in USA. Life may be very hard for those in North Korea, but at least times are simpler.
I’ve had basically zero interest in the sport (until now) but I find the international aspect incredibly engrossing. Powerlifting and geopolitics. What a world
The push press variation is kinda genius. Gives you a little bit more practice generating power with your body but has more of an eccentric and concentric portion to the lift compared to a standard push press. Bit of hip movement also allows more weight to be used. I'd say probably better at building muscle than a normal push press. Maybe worth a try?
@@RxBriggs Rippetoe didn't invent anything and most of the time speaks total BS so nobody should credit him for that. That lift must have been around since barbells exist.
But they get tested, and so even if they're taking gear, it's controlled and they can't just juice to the high-heavens like north Korea clearly have been.
Ok so this ohp variation is now my favorite. Feels awesome. I can move more weight than my strict press, but not as much of a cheat as a push press. Shoulders feel roasted afterwards, in a good way. This will be my preferred ohp variation going forward
It's been popularized by starting strength, you can look for videos of press 2.0 for tutorials. In itself it's a (stricter) derivative of what the old clean and press de-evolved into.
I guess the music is a bit loud in retrospect, but I have headphones on, so I didn't really notice. Just wanted to say I don't know what people are on about, it was a great and informative video. I'm not really into weightlifting but it's fascinating
No words or reaction from the North Korean athlete speaks volumes. To me I feel like they are aware that they live a different life than everyone outside of the DPRK, but they are quickly realizing how big of a gap it is. That interaction with you was a window to how life could be on the outside. At the end of the bus ride, it's back to his world and back to what he came here to do.
North Korea like many countries are collecting strong athletic kids like rare Pokémons. Then weed out the runts. So... there is your answer. Collect strong kids and make them lift weights.
A professional Sports trainer told all of them use stuff ...all but it's an absolutely admirable sport.i would love to see any of the Olympic lifters compete in wsm and vice versz
A russian lifter Mikhael Koklyaev competed in both oly weighlifting and strongman quite often in like the 2000s/2010s I believe, he was a big boi. Mark Henry the pro wrestler also competed in both. Some strongmen like eddie hall and mitchell hooper have dabbled with oly lifting in yt vids
I saw a video of Om Yun Chol pressing like that, and started pressing that way. I like it. It's probably not worth much, but years ago Kirksman Teo on his old site said basically North Koreans train similarly to the Chinese, but have much more emphasis on speed compared to the Chinese. Kirksman also said more Russian influence, too, which, who knows. I kinda personally see perhaps some Japanese influence in their training, with many of them using a close stance/frog start, and the fact that Japanese were very into pressing and pulls years ago, too. Even now with pressing you can see Mikiko Andoh pressing 65kg for reps pretty easily BTN, and other Japanese female lifters pressing 60-70kg pretty easily.
I would completely buy this. Charniga has said something similar. Kirksman and Charniga are both pretty reliable sources, even if they both have some very particular views.
I obviously can’t say for certain but here are a couple things I think should get mentioned for their success. 1) Obviously juicing. Yes, everybody is juicing, but when you get tested significantly less that extra time you have makes a big difference. 2) The sheer weight they carry on their shoulders is more motivation than most other athletes have. For them, this is their entire life, from dusk to dawn and probably get started at a younger age than most if they show any potential. That mixed with everything they have to lose if they don’t perform is more motivation than ever. You either get to continue living like a celebrity there or bring shame upon your family, possibly get outcasted, and have to endure the life that most NK’s have to face. That would for sure make me be my absolute best day in and day out.
Lots of comparison to Bulgaria. Except the truth that came out of Bulgaria. Which is enough Dianabol to kill a horse and a very real existential threat to the athletes if they fail or can’t lift. Would you (and your family) rather get 2500 cals a day of food or work in the mines?
Its their only chance to live a decent life and feed their families. Theyll push themselves as much aa it takes. Motivation and even more unfettered steroids than your average lifter are a hell of a drug cocktail.
@@barath4545 Well from one of the earlier videos I knew that they are using asics, but I did not notice nike hahae. I just think it's cool the are using those classy shoes hahae.
Seb, many people (including myself) are saying the music is too loud and distracting as hell from your commentary. Please consider turning it down or off altogether.
Let's be honest here. They blast massive amounts of gear. Am i saying other countries aren't taking PED's? Definitely not. Everyone knows China, Russia, Bulgaria, Turkye, Romania and the usual suspects are taking stuff but North Koreans are almost untestable considering how hard it is to just enter the country. Don't get me wrong, Weightlifting is a juiced sport which doesn't bother me personally and the North Koreans just train ridiculously hard which i absolutely respect irrelevant if they take something or not but let's stop pretending that we don't know how they are so dominant when in fact every moron with the slightest amount of brain capacity knows what's going on. I still love watching them lift and i like their team a lot because they brought back some energy and atmosphere which was lacking previously for a long period of time. That's why i also look forward to Russia finally executing Putin and returning back to competition so competition get's more interesting again because China, NK, Russia, Bulgaria and the other juice kings can battle it out again. Anyways thank you Seb and the whole team of weightlifting house for creating such great content on a regular basis. Weightlifting journalism grew massively because of your work and dedication! Thank you!
