yo do I need it if I have a permanent retainer because I've been told there's a high chance of relaps and will need to wear both for the rest of my life
Hmm, mine's gone xD I just have half of the upper teeth held together by a metal string... The other parts fell off like 4 years ago xD Just forgot to go back and get it fixed, and my teeth look relatively fine I'd say.
I'm 30 and I've been wearing my retainers almost every night for the last 15 years. It's definitely the longest running commitment I've ever had and I get compliments on my smile all the time. Wear 'em, peeps!
It hurts like a bitch though. Damn dentists can't get it right, mine fits half of my teeth too tightly, while the other side is so loose I can move it with my tongue. Do you still wear yours? If so, kudos to you, that's longer than most adult relationships 🙇♀️
@oddball1336 Yes, I still wear mine almost every night. Mine are so old i have the metal retainers which i dont think they make anymore. Sounds like your dentist or orthodontist needs to adjust your retainer or make another one entirely.
@@RainbowSprinkles123 I've only worn them about 6 times and I've had my retainers for a year, but the dentist told me I don't have to wear them anymore.. ironic 😂
@oddball1336 he's either got some real confidence in your teeth not moving, or he's setting you up so they do move and you'll have to get braces again 😂
Am I missing something? I only used my retainer for maybe a year after getting my braces off and my teeth haven't become crooked in the 20+ years since. -I had braces for 7 years as a kid though (I know that's unusually long).
I had that two the poor staff threw it away because i folded it in a napkin... The guy who was working literally dug through the trash to find it back and FOUND IT. Yes we gave him money ( i live in a country were tipping is nice and good but its nit necessary)
Wait, 4 years of braces hell.. 15 YEARS of retainer hell? Absolutely NO ONE.. not one soul who WORKS in orthodontics EVER says the retainer is a long term deal. They make it seem like a one night stand.. no.. that thing is more like a serious relationship.
@@tealablu3759 it's true! 😂"Make sure you wear your retainer" is not the same as the term goal you set with your braces: "x amount of procedures for x amount of time". No, if I had known I was supposed to wear it that long.. I would have. Bentist does a great job about saying WHY something needs to be done, not just that it needs to be done.
Same!! Nobody in my life said i had to wear them long term, and my parents who had braces don’t wear their retainers. And then my retainers broke and i don’t know where they are to start wearing them again now that i get it 😅 no fun
I’m an assistant and I tell people to wear them for as long as they want their teeth straight. But honestly none of my trainers have really given me a straight answer to this question so this video really cleared it up lol
after more than 3 years in braces and and having to recover from complex upper jaw reconstructive surgery, there’s no WAY i will ever even THINK about not wearing my retainers 😭 i am NOT about to do all that for a second time lol
@dwiti sinha oh no Hey, if you follow your orthodontist's instructions on what foods you should avoid and to wear rubber bands if you get given them you can get braces off after 18 months like i did
@@lcfcsince2016 Yeah lol, I haven't had ANYTHING crunchy since I got my braces on. Luckily I don't need to wear rubberbands Thanks for the tips though 😀
fun story, i dropped my pre-braces retainers in the trash can at school lunch in 3rd grade on accident, and that trash can was NASTY but then my absolute favorite teacher went ARMS DEEP in the NASTY trash can and fished out MY RETAINERS. i have never forgotten this. thank you ms. ellis it’s been almost 7 years now and i’m still grateful.
similar story, wrapped my retainer in a napkin at a restaurant while I was eating because I didn't have the case on me, forgot about it, we left, about an hour later I realize my mistake, we drove back, had the manager empty the trash can into a bin and we had to dig around until we found both halves. of course I don't wear my retainer anymore. I couldn't tell you why but they just don't move anymore. I never wore them much. I guess my bungee cords were just weaker.
So you're telling me... that after I've already gone through the torture, that is braces. I'm stuck with a retainer for the rest of my life, that if I do t wear, then I'll have to have braces again 😭
no, if they are removable then, as it says in the video, after a certain number of years you probably won't have to use them again, if they are permanent they usually work fine too and you don't need to change them most of the time
Dude, I got my braces off in high school. At 27, I regularly pass out without my bottom retainer and night guard (yay clenching 😂😂). My teeth don’t move much You’ll live. Tough it out for 10 years. I promise it’s not that bad. JUST DONT DROP THEM!!!
Dude, i had braces for 3 years, then retainers for like 6 months and then my teeth were all set for life and the doctor told me that I don't need to wear it anymore. So after 7 years my teeth are in good shape, there is no change but i have a question do you all really have to wear retainers for like 10 years.
I had braces for the longest time and I was SO excited to get them off, imagine my excitement when I was told I’d need to wear retainers for pretty much the rest of my life. I was not happy. Long story short I had a friend who basically had the same orthodontist treatment that I had and she DIDNT wear her retainers but I did. Guess which one of us has a straight smile to this day 😁
Man I hated my retainer so much. I just got a bonded one. And yes it breaks every couple years but this is way easier than dealing with a retainer for years
Please learn from my mistake - I was having a late night snack and took my retainer out in the kitchen. Put it in a tissue because, obviously. Finished eating and went to bed, knowing my retainer was still there in the kitchen wrapped in tissue. Next morning someone threw out the 'dirty tissue' and my PERFECT teeth had already moved by the time I rushed to the orthodontist to get another retainer made. I had zero idea they broke the mould to make retainers so the best they could do was make a fresh mould but from my already moved teeth. Had I known this I would've absolutely gone through the rubbish bins. I lost my perfect teeth forever. I guess to be fair once that rev. O retainer got worn and got a hairline crack, my teeth would've started moving anyways, they didn't give you a back-up, just the one. So each subsequent iteration of retainer would've been less perfect than the last anyways.
My dad actually had his braces done when he was in his 20's. I popped out in his 30's and I have never seen him wear his retainer ever and his smile is still perfect.
Super wish the army hadn’t thrown mine out during basic training in-processing. Apparently they were considered contraband and they tossed all contraband instead of locking it in our suitcases with our clothes and stuff couldn’t wear either on basic. Teeth sure did shift back quickly on bottom.
Bentist, I've had my retainers for 6 years now and my teeth start moving after an hour of taking them off. What's up with that? I even wore them 24/7 for a month straight. That only made them start moving after like 2 hours. What's up with that?
I've had my retainer for almost a year, and I wore it everyday for six months all day long. My Ortho told me to move to wearing it at night, and only after two hours without it, when I put my retainer in, it's super tight and hurts. Also my teeth have shifted a lot and I wear it as much as I can.
I'm somewhere in the 5-10 years (I think it's like 7? 8?) range of being released from braces prison and 2-3 times a week works fine for me. After the first few years, I started wearing it every other night, and it's a blessing!
y’all i have a retainer on the back of my teeth and let me tell you it’s the best thing i could have ever freaking asked for i can barely tell it’s there and i get soooo many compliments on my straight teeth
Bentist… You scared me back into wearing my retainer. Didn’t wear it for almost a year and it really hurt at first when I wore it but now it doesn’t hurt at all. Thanks!
I had Invisalign for 2 years, never really took them off unless i was eating but i put them immediately after brushing my teeth. After getting the retainer, i wear them 80% of the day, they've become an accessory, i feel naked without them in, still brushing my teeth after every meal too.
Once my plastic retainer no longer fit, my overbite returned and my teeth gradually started to revert to their original places. Since my family wouldn't help me replace the retainer shortly after it had given in, I'll have to have a dentist evaluate whether I need orthodontics again or a new retainer. The metal Hawley option appeals to me because it doesn't have a layer interfering with the bite unlike the plastic type.
I've been wearing my retainers every night for nearly 10 years. If I forget to put them in, I have to get out of bed to wear them because if feels weird without it lol
Ugh I stopped wearing it nightly after like 4 years. Then I started doing it randomly- I should have just done it every night. I got my braces off almost 10 years ago now, I could be at that 2-3x week stage if I just wore them!! But I can’t fit my retainers anymore. My teeth aren’t bad, but there are two teeth that bother me a lot…
I had braces for 5 years and wore my retainer for 2. Got told I would need to keep using the retainer but stopped and haven't had a problem since. That was 15 years ago.
In my area golds r popular u can get nice ones for like 400 bucks and most dentist's will help make it happen so that's an option for those concerned w looks or image just don't think ull be having dimonds
Ha! It's been nearly 20 years since I got my braces off & I still wear that darn retainer almost every night. I only needed to get a new 1 2years ago & if I miss 3 nights it hurts putting the plate back in. I'm definitely wearing a retainer for life
Im seeing an insane amount of conflicting information from a bunch of different orthodontic clinic websites all ive seen thats definite is theres always a risk
I haven't worn the plastic retainers in years. Had permanent ones. My bottom permanent retainer broke off about 5 years ago. Part of my top permanent retainer broke last week. Got my braces off 15ish years ago and my bottom teeth have shifted very minimally without any retainer. So, I'm hoping I can get my top retainer removed and not have my teeth shift much.
Took out my retainer for a day for a date. All my teeth moved. Keeping it in hurt waaaayy too much to do anything productive. Sad that my teeth don’t look as nice as they did when I first got the braces off, but they still look far better than they did before.
I stopped wearing mine when i was like 15 and my bottom teeth are now crocked again and i’m 26. Yes wear them you will regret it. I certainly do! I’m in the process now of getting them fixed again.
35yr old former braces patient👋 from someone that went thru multiple plastic ones.. didn't wear em properly so then had to get metal ones to help em shift bk.. then those get stepped on and broken & Mom says no more you pay for new ones I'm done! My teeth do not even remotely look the same unfortunately 😔 so yessssss *WEAR YOUR RETAINERS!!!!* Exactly the way you are told to!!!
Yeaaa I'm glad that when I was twelve and I was asked by my dentist whether I want to get my front gap closed and my teeth straightend I said no. I really love my individual smile and I don't regret one second of it especially when I see how much commitment it would need. (Different ofc if your teeth NEED to be fixed because they hinder you in your daily life and also it's an individual choice)
Had braces twice when I was a kid, because they put them on the first time before I lost my baby teeth. I still have the permanent metal retainers on the back of my top and bottom front teeth. I think I stopped wearing my clean retainers about 6 or so years after getting my braces off for the second time. I havent seen those things in YEARS! 😂
I didn't wear my retainer so long tbh...maybe a bit over a year? They still fit if i try them on so i think having braces for 3 years + 1 year of retainers did enough for my teeth to stay in place😅 After a year I slowly used them less and less. Now I don't use them anymore.
My retainers were a bit different also. Not those plastic ones. It has a one metal wire that holds teeth in place, crown like things that goes on my back teeth and a plastic replica of the roof of my mouth so it fits nicely in my mouth.
It's kind of sad how much money some people have to use on teeth. I got them fixed free cause i was under 18y old. My dentist also said if my retainer breaks in use, i get new one for free. My braces also never broke even if i ate things that wasn't so safe. My dentists did a great job and im forever thankfull for them.
honestly in love with my retainers. they're more like Invisalign instead of the metal ones so they protect my teeth from the insane grinding I do in my sleep lol
Unfortunately mine got eaten by my dog when I was 16, my mom refused to get a replacement. Now 11+ years later only my bottom teeth has moved a bit, but I really wish I still had a retainer.
I never got retainers, it's been 10 years. For me being poor kinda helped me 😂, my braces stayed on for 3+ years compared to the 22 months doc suggested (cause we didn't have money to pay for monthly followup and installment). Maybe that's why I never needed the retainers.
I use this toothpaste with extra fluoride and my dentist actually prefers I wear my retainer every night even without the desire for straight teeth because it keeps the toothpaste on them overnight to help seal the little enamel damage from my braces
My orthodontist told me to start wearing my retainer less and less after about a year of wearing it (when I started I wore it 24/7 only took it of for cleaning and eating, The process ended 3 years ago, since then I haven't worn my retainer once and I haven't noticed any shift in my teeth. Moral of the story is, get a good orthodontist, and let them tell you what is the right thing to do for your case, my teeth weren't that crooked to begin with, that's probably why I could stop wearing my retainer so soon.
I have permanent retainers because that’s a lot more common in my country (all the people I know have permanent ones) But when my retainer broke, after 6 years I got it replaced like 2 months after that and it didn’t move at all. So yeah. I can’t really take em out but I probably get them removed once I have them in like 15 years more. You don’t really notice em tbf
The thing is my orthodontist never told me at the beginning id have to wear rubber bands or retainers so I wasn’t prepared and didn’t wear them. This is mainly because i started not trusting them if they where lying cuz they never told be in the first place, I have trust issues
I'm ashamed to say at least ten years ago, I spit my retainers (top and bottom, clear plastic) out in my sleep. My dog then chewed them to hell, and I couldn't affors new ones. Only one bottom tooth has shifted, but I still think about it all the time.
I only wore mine a couple months after braces. Not sure if it's related, but 6 years later started having extreme jaw problems. Wear my tmj orthotics every day and every night.
I got my braces off ~4 years ago and wear my retainer every night if possible. On the occasional night I don’t, it doesn’t matter as much. I can remember a year or two ago when I’d miss a night and putting on my retainer was like getting my braces tightened. Man.
I got my braces removed about a week ago and I got this retainers with a pretty colour. My dentist told me I have to wear it everyday for the first 5 weeks since that's the most important time Even tho it doesn't have to be on 24/7. One thing I learned is that it's pretty difficult to not slur my words with it on 😭
I got braces at age 9 and had them taken off at age 11. Now I'm 17 and have worn my retainer almost every night since. I get complimented on my smile each time I go to the dentist. In conclusion, WEAR YOUR RETAINER! It's not a 1-year deal. It's a lifetime commitment
Kids have the clear aligner retainers now so I feel like there's not many excuses to not wear them consistently at night. But back in my day, the retainers were made of metal and plastic. Covering my entire palate was a thick piece of hard plastic that would affect how I swallowed and my speech pattern. My tongue is thick and wide and I have a small dental arch. So there would be times I would be woken up by the discomfort and end up taking the retainer out. I was meant to wear my retainers 24/7 in the first year and then at night for 15 years. I lasted around 5 years before giving up. Yes my teeth have moved. Wear your clear retainers kids, no excuses for you luckier ones
I wear my retainer every night though a few years ago I went to Hawaii and I forgot it at one of the hotels I was staying at. Not to mention it was the beginning of the trip. Poor orthodontist was disappointed with me.
I've had my braces off for almost 4 years and I try not to miss more than 2-3 nights a month. When I got my wisdom teeth out I didn't wear my retainer for like a week but luckily it still fit when I started wearing it again.
I wear mine every single night even with the bonded retainer. Since I have clenched and grinded I went through about 3-4 pairs of the plastic retainers each costing 300 a pair. The pair I have now is thicker material and lasted years. It protects from grinding so that’s nice since the one night I forgot I chipped a tooth.
I used to grind my teeth in my sleep due to stress and I chewed through my plastic retainer and it split and was uncomfortable not to mention not really doing it’s job. I don’t think we could afford another one so I just had to deal. My over bite is still fixed and my front teeth are straight but my bottom ones definitely are not but that’s better than nothing I guess
After like 2 years of braces, I had finally gotten a retainer, but I was at the age where all my teeth decided to start coming out. I had a relatively loose tooth at the time when they took the mold, so when I got it, I was only able to wear it for a bit before the tooth came out. (By the way, I asked them to pull it and they said they didn't pull teeth.) The tooth that came out, a canine, was one of the few that kind of held it tightly in place, so the bottom retainer stopped fitting. Eventually, the new tooth came in and when we asked the dentist to make a new retainer, they said it cost something pretty pricey, and we had already spent $4,000 on braces. Basically, I just had some crappy dentists that were overly expensive. Now, my procedures are done at much better offices and I'm happy with my teeth!
