Small correction. Olimar DOES mention that the dolpin probably could launch without all 30 parts when collecting certain parts or during certain end of day texts. He never says witch ones though (outside of him remarking one of the ones you just picked up is optional) so its still not super usefull but its something

The thing about the mediocre ending is that if you think about it, it also screwed up the life of Olimar. In Pikmin 2 we follow the story after the perfect ending where the S.S. Dolphin was entirely repaired and due to this Olimar casually grabbed a crown cap as a souvenir for his son. Once he arrived, well, you know how it goes. But then, without the perfect ending; Olimar never picked up the crown cap, the Hocotate ship never picked it up and thus the President never realized that there were treasures on that planet to pay off the debt. In short; Hocotate Freight went bankrupt, the Hocotate ship was probably sold or scrapped, the President was probably caught and killed by the loan sharks, Olimar lost his ship and together with Louie, their job.

I feel like pikmin 4 was given a little bit of a disservice here as there are quite a lot of secrets in that game not many know about 1. Like in Pikmin 2 and 3 pikmin will sing a song at random, this starts with just being the Pikmin theme from Pikmin 2, garden of hope from Pikmin 3, awakening wood and the Pikmin 4 marketing song (which was an unknown song until the trailer released) but, as you beat the engulfed castle and leafy olimar, their themes become unlocked and can be sung at random too 2.Dweevils can pick up any carryable item in the game, this isn’t really a helpful or harmful feature but it is pretty funny to see one carrying something like a scrummy bone, oatchi seems to have a unique interaction when he bites the bone causing it to break immediately. They can also carry firestarters which can go on to burn Pikmin in the rare case of the giants hearth 3. The “olfactory sculpture” (scented candle) treasure actually has a fire element hitbox on the candle light itself, it’s hard to see since the treasure is quite tall but it can be easier to hit in the cave itself because of the wacky terrain of 4’s metal caves. 4. It’s well known that the groovy long legs plays different songs depending on what it’s doing, but it also has a special track for the instance of being frozen. This isn’t really seen in the game since ice Pikmin kinda suck against the boss, but you can see it in the piklopedia. The boss also has a variation for the pause screen. 5. When collecting castaways, they play a very fast jingle that sounds like it might be the same each time, but if you listen closely depending on the castaway a different theme will play, for example the leafling castaways play the leafling leitmotif, the koppaite castaways play the koppai anthem and olimar and Louie both play the classic leitmotif associated with hocotate and the rescue corps. 6. The castaways actually have even more hidden dialog than mentioned in the video. They also react to more specific things like whether oatchi has his leaf tail or how accurate the player is to looking like them (with a second set of dialog for when the player has the wrong colours but the other features are accurate) castaways in general make a lot of sneaky Easter eggs and references to other games and the pikmin world if you dig around enough but there’s too many to list. 6. In olimars shipwreck tale, if you wait until the very last day the main area’s day theme will play at an increased tempo, then slow down during the evening theme. Most players will beat or restart the side story by then so a lot of people might not have picked up on it. 7. Although not used very much intentionally in the game, there are pretty humerous element based interactions with the new ice and fire mechanics. For example, a frosty bulborb can freeze nearby creatures and a fiery bulblax can reset the timer on a fire starter. 8. If you choose to play as one of the other playable speaking characters in the version of dandori battle selected from the title screen, such as non- leafified olimar or shepherd, they actually have entirely unique sets of dialog not seen in the main story, replacing what Collin typically gives you. 9. If you fail to complete olimars shipwreck tale, you will receive the “I am so very tired” captains log, this is actually a reference to an entirely unused captains log from Pikmin 1 with the same text. You also unlock it automatically when 100 percenting the game, but many players may not have seen this. 10. As an enemy in the hero’s hideaway, moss has a unique interaction with pikpik carrots where she will simply stand in front of it and bark for a few seconds until it despawns, this doesn’t buy you enough time to really do much but it is pretty funny. As it’s a pretty big game there’s probably more I missed, this is just stuff I found from experimenting myself on playthroughs, if anyone else found anything it’d be awesome to hear those too

The middling ending for Pikmin 1 _is_ hinted at in game, in a roundabout way. Olimar sometimes mentions during his post-day Journal Log things that he "thinks he may not need to collect every ship part to lift off." However, despite this text being highlighted to tell you it's important, Olimar immediately shakes it off as crazy talk.

I've heard people wonder why exactly the world of pikmin 2 has so many secret enemies that only appear far into the days, long after most players would have already finished. I'll tell you why- for players like kid me. You see, kid me was terrified of letting pikmin die. Kid me would go around punching every enemy to death. Kid me would finish entire caves and then just never fight the boss because I was afraid of them. Kid me would run caves again, and again, and again, often picking up little to no treasure along the way. Kid me went through the ENTIRE final cave 5 or 6 times before finally fighting the boss, instead of just looking at what he could do and getting spooked away. Kid me spent MANY entire days collecting berries for sprays. Some people might find that boring or even baffling, but kid me was having an absolute blast the entire time. And I did eventually 100% the game. I saw every single end of day letter until they ran out. I saw those little spray-giving mites multiple times. I saw the secret beady long legs in the perplexing pool multiple times. I fought the little bulbears as they appeared, and eventually the big one too. I got horrible mites surprise dropped on my pikmin. Most players will never see most of these events, but for kid me they made the game feel truly alive. No matter how long I played, there was no telling what I'd find on my next visit to an area.

Great video, lots of things I didn't know about! Also, I like to think that more enemys appearing the longer you stay in a area is both a punishment and immersion, the enemys recognize there has been a large concentration of pikmin in one area so they move there to feed.

Slight correction The optional parts are vaguely hinted in Pikmin in at 1 description of the parts once you’ve bought them back to the ship, I know the UV Lamp says something about it serving little purpose and maybe there are other parts like this, I think another mandatory says something to the effect maybe not all parts are required also towards the final days some of olimars diary entries hint towards it it straight up tells you that there are or which ones they are but it is indirectly told to yoy

I think the "mediocre" ending of Pikmin 1 is most likely to happen if you reach the Final Trial, but are having issues with the Emperor Bulblax before Day 30 and can still technically "end" the game that way.

2:30 Well, some kids weren't very good at pikmin and didn't get all the parts before day 30. Even if it ISNT that hard. And that's the point. You'd never go out of your to get it because it's basically the default ending unless you're either REALLY bad or good enough to beat the Emperor.

I have NEVER heard any of the alternate Pikmin noises as far as I’m aware, but I have heard the WEOLP noise, or “weird burp/bulburp” as I call it

The Pikmin 2 Bulbear + Beady in the perplexing pool was something that, as a child, I experienced. And now, I only recently got back into Pikmin, and upon reaching perplexing pool once again, all I could remember is the shock and fright of wth a beady longlegs is, with it suddenly landing right above me

I wish Pikmin games had more optional bosses. It's really cool that you can go out of your way to fight the Goolix, Mamuta, and Smoky Progg in Pikmin 1. Because they're shown in the Enemy Reel regardless of if you ever met them, many people find out about these enemies this way, and it makes a great incentive to replay the game. While every future Pikmin installment technically has optional bosses, you're going to have to fight them if you want to collect All Treasures/Fruit. Like yeah, I don't *have* to fight the Armored Mawdad, Calcified Crushblat, or Ancient Sirehound to *beat* the game, but I do have to if I want to *complete* the game.

I've always found the 5 optional space parts odd. Aside from the Secret Safe, most of these parts aren't difficult to collect nor are they out of your way. The Massage Machine and UV lamp are honestly the two easiest parts to get in the Distant Spring, and taking care of the Breadbug in the Forest Naval saves a lot of future headaches. From a gameplay perspective, it would have made more sense to make the optional parts especially difficult. This way, the player would be rewarded for going the extra mile and get the best ending. The only reason I can see for these parts being optional is that they're clearly unimportant based on their names and suggested purposes. It wouldn't make any sense for Olimar to fail because he didn't collect the massage machine.

8:09 I've actually seen both of these before back in the day. I remember being so confused when my pikmin numbers started dropping out of nowhere. Made it back to base only to see the bulbear decimating the pikmin that had brought stuff back. I also saw the beady long legs at some later point and was surprised when it dropped down. Glad to finally know what the trigger for them spawning is, because I never saw them again afterwards and most people I told about it happening were skeptical.

I remember getting absolutely terrified of the bulbear coming after me in pikmin 2 because I used to be bad and waste too many days. Then when the beady long legs came after I wasted even more days I literally was too scared to even go back to the perplexing pool as a kid.

the mediocre ending being 'out of the way' is... well... when i was younger, i wasnt very good at games, and i was also REALLY bad at knowing you could just... start over? i had 2 pikmin 1 files that had the 25 required parts, with no way of getting the rest. one was just me stuck at distant spring without enough skills to collect everything on day 30, and the other was stuck at the final trial on day 30 with... one of each pikmin and nothing else. other than that, i had at least a few files where i just straight up failed to collect enough parts by day 30. so i saw the bad ending and mediocre ending multiple times, before YEARS later i finally went back and beat it. so i dont personally think the middle ending is out of the way.

Unlike the first 3 Pikmin games which has a battle jingle based on the area, Pikmin 4 also differentiates based on enemy. Technically the mini bosses and bosses have their own jingles too, but those may as well be entire songs.

1:52 The game does tell you about the unnecessary ship parts. Hell when getting the UV Lamp it explicitly says in bright yellow letters that it doesn't affect olimars escape. Also there's end of day dialogue that also says this "There are now only _ parts that I still need to retrieve. Will I be able to recover the remaining parts in _ more days? Surely there are some parts that are not absolutely necessary. If my ship is not complete by day 30, the only way I will find out is to try to lift off."

Just to go further on the Pikmin 1 bosses thing, the game files actually consider Candypop Buds, Flint beetles and geysers to be bosses, so Mamuta may as well get to be one too.

am i the only one who thinks its sorta heartbreaking that Nintendo didn't relicense the pikmin songs for the switch port?

I would contest the idea that most people would be finished Pikmin 1 by day 15, when I was a kid I never beat the game before day 17 and my first playthough took me to day 25 and I didn't reach the distant spring till after day 15. I'd wager the same is true for a lot of kids that played it.

I have a friend that, while she knows what Pikmin is, she isn't really a fan of the series, and every time I mention something Pikmin-related she gets jokingly annoyed. One day we were playing on my Wii, wondering what game to choose, and I told her we would play Kirby, but I put Pikmin without her noticing and activated the Home Menu as fast as I could. My intention was to give her the controller, make her close the menu and then get jumpscared by the Pikmin sound when the Nintendo logo appeared. Well, when she closed the menu, the "hmm" Pikmin sound played instead, which she did not recognize, and then it went to the title screen. She said to me "erm, this is not Kirby" and I was staring blankly into the void as my joke just failed. I swear, while I know about those different sounds, I have never had one play in my game while playing on my own. And then there of all times it did, my joke had a 1.563% chance of failing and it failed. I wanted to troll my friend but I got trolled by the game instead.

When I was kid I wasn't skilled enough to most of the items. So I kept trying until I had like 27 parts, wound up with the medeocre ending, and called it good enough. For like a year until my general proficiency went up and I was able to actually beat Babi's first RTS.

Fun Fact:The Baldy Long Legs Appearing Out Of Nowhere In Pikmin 4 Could Be A Reference To Pikmin 2 Where A Beady Long Legs Appears Out Of Nowhere. There's Also A Ton Of Boss Fight References Of Pikmin 4 And I Believe There Are 6 References To Boss Types In The Previous Games But 8 If You Count Some From The Spinoff Game Types Of Pikmin Bosses: Groups Big Jumpscaring "Gifting A Treasure" Appearing In A Fake Cave So Look For Each References From Pikmin 4 And I'll Give The Second One So The 3 Burrowing Snargrets In Cavern For A King Is A Reference To The 3 Burrowing Snagrets From Pikmin 1 And Thats It Have To Say

There are actually hints that you dont need all parts i think. If i remember correctly, Olimar mentions in some of his logs, that there should be some parts that he wont need to repair the dolphin

I thought they added Winged Pikmin being faster if you have 60 Pikmin for the Hard Mode, since that one has a Pikmin cap of 60. But they only added that in the Deluxe port, so that makes no sense unless they had planned to add it for the original, but didn't.

9:53 according to @SilokHawk video on 2-player battle, in the Wii and Gamecube version Dim Labyrinth always used a randomly generated layout and Brawlyard had a chance to use one as well.

I didn't know the mediocre ending was considered obscure? If you fail to complete everything by 30 days, but you got Most Things, that's what you get. For instance, if you just can't seem to beat the Emperor Bulblax. Final optional part not gotten, hence the medium success ending. This is mirrored in Pikmin 3, where if you win without getting most of the fruit, our adventurers aren't sure they got enough to feed anyone and don't feel like they learned a lesson about team work so they're not bringing that back, either.

One little known fact you missed was that snitchbugs only spawn after day 4 in the distant spring. This means it is possible to do the distant spring without snitchbugs if you are fast enough. Kinda cool how the devs reward people able to complete the first 2 areas in one day.

I wonder if the Pikmin 2 areas getting more enemies as the days go further is to try and prevent people from just sitting and farming berries for days
