Just to add more information on your presentation, which I enjoyed. The down side platform buildings at Burwood are not oroginal. When the line was being duplicated in the late 50's requiring that a new structure be provide4d for the Up side, the builders, using the former Down side building as a works storage building for tools and the likes, left something on one night that caused the buildings to catch fire which totally destroyed them. The VR in their habit of re-using things, replaced the buildings with dis-used structures from Baylea & Catani from the former Strezleki line. The current station building on the Down platform a Burwood is a combination of these 2 buldings, now joined by a verandah. As for Hartwell, The safeworking arrangements there, was the first attemptnat automatic point operation bt the VR. It consisted of a set of CCW points operated weighted points and a rotary detector, with just a single home arrival signal in eaxh direction. Very simple but effective, and quite a brilliant design. I have had many a run on the Alamein line as a Fireman & Driver on steam, diesel electric & suburban trains. heres another memory for you passing through to Riversdale you had to cross the tram lines a pretty rough crossing at that the train had to go slow because the carrages used to bounce up and down you had to hang on . the same happened with those rattly old series 25 trams crossing the rail line i used to stand on Riversdale station and watch the fun..i got to know the guy who worked on the level crossing . sometimes he was asleep and you could hear the train whistle blareing outside the box . he would run out and move the gates thought you would like this cheers buddy

thanks buddy I lived on that line for over 40 years my street was Ambon street just up the hill about 100 meters from Alamein station i came ther in 1949 i do miss this line a lot great memories mate cheers

Hi there mate I just come across your RU-vid channel I grew up in and around deepens Kew Camberwell and Baldwin I remember a disused railway line from east Camberwell that passed under Canterbury road then under several other roads I believe that old line is now called anniversary trail I don't know if you know of it or weather it's worth looking at but I thought I'd mention it to you I love your video's great work 👍

It's a great little line that one. Nice and peaceful. I visited Walhalla only a couple of months ago and discovered that little secret about Hartwell station while I was there. So I went to Hartwell to go check it out, and also discovered an excellent little milk bar converted to a cafe called Fordham's. Just an excellent little hidden gem! I also rode the Anniversary trail from Clifton Hill across to Kew, and then all the way to Oakleigh. Great bike trail if you're into that.

Riversdale signal box is still operational. The normal route setting is for the trams. When the bell annunciator rings for an UP or DN train the signal controller reverses the tram signals and derails, reverses the lever control for the tilt boom barriers and reverses the signal control lever for an UP or DN train. The next operation is to supply the correct current to the overhead. The overhead is an isolated square and by means of a control lever rail voltage, 1500 DC is applied to the square or tramway voltage, 600 DC. I have simplified the operation but it is a very interesting procedure non the less. All rail and tram crossings operate on the same principle.

I heard that the Willison station buildings on both sides came from Orbost. When I visited Orbost in the ‘80s riding in the guard’s van, it only had the goods shed, oddly decorated with Mildura posters. The buildings were probably relocated in the ‘50s

If you are working on the Belgrave/Lilydale lines, one thing to consider. Belgrave station is the highest in the Melbourne train network, approximately 234 metres above sea level.

So Alamein is named after the sight from WW2. I always used to think of this Alamein when Ted Bullpitt mentioned it in Kingswood Country. Great video too.

Chadstone Shopping centre would love to have an underground station but the Alamein line would need to be extended with a tunnel from somewhere between Burwood and Ashburton stations so that there can be duplication between Ashburton and Alamein and those two stations going underground to protect the heritage listing of the corridor, but before such project should be allowed, I would want to see the level crossings at Riversdale and Prospect Hill Roads (the only two crossings remaining) removed first because there will be so much demand for any service that goes to Chadstone Shopping centre that services will need to increase frequency in order to prevent exceeding full capacity, and therefore the two level crossings will become traffic nightmares

Weird/sad fact: every time I go on the Alamein Line, someone dies...actually, it is every time someone dies on the Glen Waverley Line, I go on the Alamein Line. Btw, its a good cycle path beside this line, and some great street art on the Toorak Rd bridge between Burwood & Hartwell stations.
