Yeah, it’s a horror story. But they keep sanitizing it because they don’t know how the real people felt (and I’m sure they don’t want to insult the culture). So, there’s a lot of comforting distance between their narrative and the true reality. It allows them to embellish things. What irritated me was when one of the speakers said they would have material comforts and the prospects of being the sultan’s main consort.
