@@povotaknight2063 I would say no, because it’s an elevator, not a vault door. In fact, the institute doesn’t even have a real door, let alone a gear shaped one.
@@TheNinthGeneration1 What's the difference between a vault door and a teleporter? Both serve the same function, both serve as the sole exit point to an underground complex, and both cannot be used freely (unless the Overseer/Director says so). I agree with @Meh. The institute is basically a Vault that wasn't built by VaultTec.
@@asherandai2633 well first off, the vault door is a door that breaks the seal on the shelter, allowing not only people but also air and light to pass in an out of the vault, while a teleported is a lot more selective. There’s also the fact a vault door is shaped like a gear and they use that design to help open the door. There’s also the fact that a teleported can activate anywhere, meaning that technically the door is everywhere, it’s just that the other side always leads to the same spot. We exploit that fact when we build our own entrance. The Institute is a bunker, a Vault is a subset of a bunker, just as a Ferrari is a kind of car.
1:38:30 Nate: "I hate to break it to you, but your Courser wasn't all that tough." Justin Ayo: "Then it's likely the unit was defective." The random Courser that was until now sitting right here between them: "Aight... I'mma just head out now."

Little noticed fact, Alan Binet, the scientist who is arguing that synths are dreaming and must be sentient, his voice actor is none other than Robert Picardo, he's been a major stage actor for decades but his most famous role was actually playing the Holographic Doctor on Star Trek Voyager, a character who's entire arc over the 7 seasons was grappling with becoming sentient and then in the later seasons, ACTUALLY fighting for his rights as a sentient being so that his rights could be respected. Its a very fitting cameo for Picardo to play a scientist who was all in on the synth project but has developed misgivings now that hes observing synths experience things that not only were they not designed to experience, but are really only shared by sentient beings who can dream
Holy crap thats so cool! Can't believe I didn't know that- voyager was a childhood favorite of mine and I was just thinking about the similarities between the star trek theme and institute theme the other day when watching the clip of him and 7 singing Darling Clementine
that's very interesting, i thought that might be the same voice actor, but i also thought it was Robert who played Nazeen in skyrim as their voices sound very similar lol. but the story of Alan Binet is dumb, think about this for a second, his argument for synths dreaming somehow proved by every standard they can measure that synths have souls, that came directly from Alen Binet's character lol. bethesda bethesda bethesda.... always writing story arch's that make no logical sense lol. like for the whole railroad story i get their reasons for putting this silly notion in the story, but it's still very silly none the less and makes the head of robotics sound like a total moron lol, so it makes you think maybe this is the reason why these synths have this "flawed thought process of free will", and it's so odd nobody else within the institute questions this as this guy Alan has for himself a sex bot synth for himself, it's admitted that this is weird, but nobody questions why he's in the role in the first place and just for some odd reason keeps him there lol. i'm surprised the SRB have no clue why their synths want to escape, of course they will say "synths aren't people" and also say "synths don't want anything" they also never connect the dots with Alan benet's delusional opinions and perhaps find some way to replace him with someone who doesn't have these delusions, it's just never a single thought in the story, there is a story to find out about the missing synths and it involving Alan but ultimately involving his son who's been letting them go free and even after his son is banished from the institute, he's still in that role in robotics, one would think he would remove himself, because after all, he was the one who influenced his son to this kind of delusional thinking, but nope, they keep him in that role no matter what. just such stupid writing.
One thing I never really appreciated was how nice the colors of the different lab department coats look together until they were lined up for the thumbnail!
To the vats issue. Ox forgot the fact we can use vats in the beginning well before even picking up the pipboy. Doesnt point to the fact we might be synths but most likely a dev error.
We are not synths, the vats thing is a Bethesda goof. What would the Institute benefit by making a synth that eventually turned and destroyed them, and in that mission, if we were a synth, why wouldn't Shaun or any other Institute scientist use your recall code to save themselves? Lmao....stupid fan theory
The players being able to use VATS in the starting vault prior to picking up the pip boy was likely just a development choice to save time as disabling a mainline feature wouldn't have added anything substantial. The terminal entry was likely added in during the later stages of the development cycle or maybe even with one of the early patch notes when developers realised the implication of their decision on the overall story. Now looking at things from an in-universe view, if we were a synth we likely weren't recalled as doing so would have been entirely pointless. Recal codes just shut down the synth and if the battle for bunker hill mission is an indicator only allow for the issue of basic commands such as 'stay' or 'follow me' with more advanced commands likely being programmed in after reclamation. Finally, if the player was a synth what would the point in their existence, assuming there is one, be? Personally it's my head cannon that initially Shaun made our character in an attempt to develop a new recal subroutine that could be triggered remotely should a synth escape. Having some sort of backup personality trigger within the synth that would compel them to seek out and enter the institute could be a more efficient way of reclaiming escaped synths. As the story unfolds however Shaun comes to the realization that synths are humans and stricken with shame or guilt over his own wrongdoings reprograms his younger synth self to believe that they're your kid in an under baked attempt to do something good for once. Off course this is just my attempt at understanding a poorly written plot line that likely prioritized length and action rather than narrative sense.
@@MasterGamerT13 to reiterate my point of vats without the pipboy being a Bethesda goof, they also goofed with Nora's dialog when she said she was a former soldier instead of saying former lawyer.
Bethesda has mentioned that being able to use VATS before getting the Pip-Boy is, indeed, a goof up on the devs part not a hint to SS's humanity. I've heard Ox mention this on livestreams so he's aware of it, but may have just neglected to add it to the video.
@@jvazacas it’s not just ridiculous. it’s also completely convoluted the more you think about it. If Sean really made a synth version of Nate, then why didn’t he do the same thing with Nora? Plus it feels like it’s a waste of time & resources to go through all that trouble just to put a copy of Nate back in the cryo pod. There’s just way too many plot holes in this fan theory.
Pretty sure the im no stranger to combat line with nora is saying everything youve done up to that point in game which atleast includes killing kellog, a corser, a gang just based of story based quest up to that point and with just recruiting some of the companions like fighting super mutants, raiders, and a deathclaw
also people sitting in a courtroom deal with scary criminals often. Sometimes criminals are stupid enough to get violent in those settings and nora would likely know something about throwing hands if she's supposed to be adjacent to these sorts of situations.
I agree with this. The Sole Survivor doesn't say military combat experience, just combat experience. Cait has years of combat experience from the Combat Zone, but obviously never served in the military. Ox likely assumed it meant military experience due to Nate's background.
My guess on Dr. Zimmer is that he possibly passed from old age while looking for the Synth in the Capital Wasteland. He was pretty old in Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 takes place 10 years later, it's possible he died from old age.
I do appreciate the calling out of the dialogue when Norah shares Nates responses in claiming to have been a soldier, when she was actually a lawyer. Also pointing out the misspellings of notes on terminals, though to give some level of credit, it's possible the errors were on purpose. Even in academics or bureaucracies, grammatical errors can occur in official documents.
I prefer Nora over Nate but yeah I don't know why Bethesda said she was a lawyer, it doesn't the world of fallout or Nora's proficiency with weapons. If Nate was a soldier, then why not say Nora was a police officer? Nick is a detective, so Nora being a officer would still be different from him. Hell she could of been a security guard, ranger, anything that works with weapons that would of fit the world of Fallout better then a lawyer.
@@justinlynch3 Only reason I can think of for the lawyer backstory is to help Nora as the leader of a faction in being in charge of re-establishing laws to form a new governmental body to get infrastructure going again and coordinate rebuilding society. But, to get to that point, ya pretty much need combat skills to clean out the raiders & other threats.
@@justinlynch3, in our reality, the use of firearms by American civilians is legal and even widely encouraged by the state. So I don't see why it would be any different in the Fallout timeline. Thus, you can become an expert in this field without a job that requires the use of firearms.
I feel like the Doctor is definitely a railroad agent distributing their message. An Institute scientist would NEVER discard enemy propaganda so carelessly. Who are the ones that actually take out the trash? The forced labor. What happens when the forced labor is given hope? A revolution. (I'm only 30 minutes in so sorry if I had this realization for no reason lol)
I always thought it seemed obvious that Nora had been in the military before getting her law degree. Or even had been a lawyer in the military. Probably where she and Nate met.
@@Markus117d that's a reach. More likely it's canon that Nate survived and she did not. I would think a child would be more comfortable with the parent he spent more time with so it would make sense that Sean went into the cryo tube with her.
@@jvazacas its not a reach. By reaching this point, the sole survivor has been in multiple fights with different creatures. Whether its nora or nate, they Do have combat experience in the wasteland. The statement is vague enough to be implied reference to either nates previous military combat experience or combat in the wastes in Nora's case.
@@ShoppingAttic it really is. Combat experience in the wasteland doesn't make you a former soldier. That being said, Nora would've been killed in Concord as she lacked combat experience to survive against so many
35:55 I like that you said what each genus mentioned in the first Bioscience terminal is. Fun fact, the Carcharhinus genus is one of twelve genera in the requiem shark family Charcharhinidae but contains around half (over 30-ish) of the species in the requiem shark family. Species like the blacktip reef shark and oceanic whitetip shark are in this genus.

Also I want to say that I love your intro for the institute. It has that spooky calm music. Well done 😎👍🏼. I’m excited to see what you have for the brotherhood, Minutemen and the railroad.
I love how the institute is somehow surprised their miraculous, near-perfect, sentient-level-AI-having synthetic humans would get tired of being bossed around and go AWOL... For a bunch of scientists, they are kinda dumb for missing what is pretty obvious to anybody who has ever been within 100 yards of literally any sci-fi literature/media ever.
Over 2 and a half hours long! I'd personally like to thank you Ox for all the hard work you've put in to getting this done, especially during the holidays. ❤ I hope you have an amazing and happy new year!
The best evidence that the sole survivor is a synth is that everyone else in the vault had cryo pod malfunctions killing everyone, meaning the sole survivor would have died as well. The Sole survivor that wakes up is all part of Shauns experiment that involved the development of the child synth and revenge on Kellogg. The memories from nate or nora could have been planted using the memory den technology.
Also seemed like Shauns plan to create a scenario where he can spend some time with one of his parents before he died. As well as secretly leave the institute in the hands of his "children", by convincing the directors the sole survivor was his actual parent. Why it would make sense that Shaun was not too concerned about them possibly being killed by synths in the field since he needed to keep it all secret and it wasn't his actual parent at risk.
If you actually watch Kelloggs memories he explains that they shut off everyone's pods except nates cos they needed a back up. You find several references to the sole survivor being alive pre war as well so...sorry. no. Hes not a synth
I'll note about your refering to the theory about the Sole Survivor being a Synth with the Institute's tests with, well, VATS basically without the PipBoy. At the very beginning of the game, once you are able to acquire a gun, and are given a hallway full of Radroaches to use it on, you are given the tutorial for how to use VATS. However, you only acquire your PipBoy at the Vault 111 exit, to open the door. So, the Sole Survivor apparently had the ability to use VATS before being given a PipBoy, which is the only distinction between the Sole Survivor's usage of VATS and the Courier's and Lone Wanderer's usage of VATS, both of which are given PipBoys and then have access to it. I should say I think that it was merely a design mistake when making the introduction to Fallout 4, and that they Sole Survivor is not a Synth and that it was just a mistake, largely due to in the Institute gameplay, the SS becomes the head of the Institute, which I do not think Father would do, nor do I think others in the Institute would go along with. A follow-up piece of evidence is in the Brotherhood's path, they get a load of Institute data, including the DNA codes of escaped Synths, which leads to finding out someone who is unaware they are a Synth. It's not a stretch of thought that the data would also include the DNA codes of other Gen 3 Synths, which would have outed the SS as a Synth if they were one. It is a theory that has some merit, but lacks a lasting foundation to stand on imo, which is why I do not believe it is true.
Sorry, but why wouldn't the Institute scientists or Shaun himself use your recall code when you go to destroy it? No, not a synth, Bethesda goof. Nate or Nora being a synth is a stupid fan theory, nothing more
I’m pretty sure that gen 3 synths, aka the ones that look human are more organic and less machine like so they’re injury’s are wounded instead of damage like a machine.
@@Captain_JC487it's more a callback to the origins of the terms Robot and Android. Think Blade Runner more than nuts and bolts when it comes to Gen 3 Synths and Coursers. Mixture of genetic engineering and biotechnology construction to make an organic machine. Gen 3s are basically Blade Runner Replicants.
The institute was always a part that i skip in my playthroughs because I always got lost, I never fully explored it but wow the amount of insight of this faction I’m this two and a half hour video has blown my mind, it’s very interesting to get to know the institute
I wonder if he chose gorilla's because of our similarities and only having been successful so far of making human synths? 🤔 Thank you, as always and Happy New Year everyone!
Technically they already made bird synths too and we’re planning on sea creatures like dolphins after the gorillas 🦍. So I don’t think it was limited understanding that was an issue. Probably other variables at work. Never know, though. Could’ve been a comfortability factor in there to stick close to what they know. 🤷♀️
@@Its_Me_Romano yes but all great apes and chimps are so very close to us in DNA that they probably could have their pick and still be keeping it close to home. They wouldn’t have to be restricted to “the closest” since they already made birds. So, perhaps there were other reasons for choosing gorillas over other closely related apes.
Harambe was a synth. He died because he deviated from standard protocols but because he was in a public position they couldn't use a recall code or teleport in without being noticed.
I don't know why I stopped watching your videos for a while but I am super happy to come back to a loads of content. And you haven't lost your charm or style at all keep up the great work
I don't know if this is an Easter egg or not but Clayton was the antagonist in the Disney's Tarzan movie and considering there's gorillas in the same room as a person named Clayton I think it is an Easter egg
I love the soundtrack you hear when you wonder around the Institute. It's so chill, and has a subtle futuristic vibe. A pretty big departure from the usual ost you hear around the wasteland. Still fits the game well though, cause the Institute is supposed to have that impact when we visit it for the first time. Like it's so new, clean, almost alien-looking, nothing like what we've seen in the wasteland before.
Wow!!! Yes I see by the length of this video that there was a lot of footage to capture! Thank you for all the hard work and thank you for not rushing this masterpiece! ❤
but you can use VATS before you get your pip boy in Fallout 4, go on and start a new game and as soon as you are attacked by a bug you can use VATS right then you don't get the pip boy tell your just about out of the vault I am thinking this was a mistake by the game makers however
I kinda hated the institute by the time I got to it. Never really investigated this area as well as I should have. Having never done an institute game, I had no idea there were so many good things here. Wow, I am gonna have to do an institute run now. Thanks Oxhorn. I liked this video a lot.
I still say Nate/Nora is probably a Synth. Remember, they're able to use Vats in the vault before they get a pipboy. Not to mention, when you listen to Tinker Tom as he hacks the Corsair chip, you see your normal hacking terminal. But he's describing his view as something completely different. Also, it would explain the players' unnatural building abilities
Nope. Nate is referenced in multiple pre war sources as a decorated veteran and Kelloggs memories State he was kept alive as a human DNA sample back up. Also, if he was a synth the brotherhood would have found out at the same time they did about danse.
Late to the party, but the Nora combat dialog has to do with cut content. The character the player chooses would be the veteran while the spouse was the lawyer. This was cut for the most part, but things like that might be missed when this was changed.
The institute is by far the best ending possible. You are the leader of the institute in the end, therefor are able to dictate what goes on. You can stop the kidnappings and eventually build up trust with the outside world by making progress and restoring humanity.
I can tell by the length of this video and the detail you went into just how much insane amount of work went into this. Thanks for doing it, Ox. Love this content!
2077 is in about 53 years. It sounds long but that will be here before we know it. Hopefully the future won't be so bleak. I'll be 94 if I live that long so I might get to see what happens.
The very first time I did a playthrough of Fallout 4 I ended up siding with the Institute. I don't quite remember what my thought process was to side with them but it might have been something along the lines of "man this places looks really clean and pretty, I wanna stay here" or "well he's my son so I'll trust him". Yeah I'm pretty simple-minded sometimes... Now that I've had time to watch more of your videos, Ox, and listening to you explain why the Institute is bad in general, I do understand why, but I still feel kinda torn for some reason. On one hand I still think that the Institute itself is a beautiful place with brilliant minds that should remain alive, and I like to think that when we become the leader we can change it to actually help the Commonwealth. But on the other, I understand these scientists can be seen as delusional, thinking only for themselves and what they want instead of wanting to help others. As the player, I always want to feel like I've done something good, not evil. I honestly have a hard time painting the Institute as purely evil and needs to be purged. I know the sides you can take in Fallout New Vegas are a lot more grey and none are wholly good either. It's difficult to explain... In my current playthrough I haven't fully taken a side yet, wanting to explore all options in a single playthrough as much as possible. But I think I might end up either siding with the Institute again because I still find them fascinating, or with the Railroad for the first time because you can do so much with them and get to blow up the Brotherhood of Steel spectacularly, while still also siding with the Minutemen to protect the Commonwealth.
I feel like the best outcome would be if all 3rd Gens were released to the RR. Then the 2nd gens were used to assist the MM to clear out location of Feral Ghouls and Super Mutants that Boston would be a thriving city again.,
I read this console but it contradicts the people taken. Every person replaced was bad people. Preston was a scam artist. The father south of atom cats was abusive. The other person whom we know was replaced was in diamond city but we don't know if he was a bad person before or not
2:23:43 I just want to add to this part, the sole survivor does use vats before actually getting the pipboy in the vault. I don’t believe he is a synth either but if vats is directly relating to actually having and being proficient with a pipboy, why can you use vats before getting a pipboy?
Thank you for making this video. I am always looking for more videos on the Institute. I've never been as fascinated by a faction in a video game as I have been with the Institute. I'll bet this was a LOT of work to make.
I propose that the request to improve on the teleporter system is because of the power usage of the system. If it's crippling to use it as much as you are, do you want to add a field of study that would lead to using it even more?
So crazy how much you’ve grown from when I found you. From before 76 opened to now you’ve done nothing but keep blowing me away. And consistent too! Hope all is well old friend, I need to make another live stream again soon!
2:24:00 I’m sure this has been brought up already, but you are able to use VATS in vault 111 before you pick up the pip-boy. The games tells you how to use VATS on the radroaches as you exit the overseer’s office.
I feel like the addiction to fancy lads, the knowledge of baseball, and all the other idiosyncrasies gen 3 synth have all have to so with the SS and their spouse. Shaun being taken so young would likely mean he wasn't exposed to such things given he was raised by robots and nerds.
I love this deep dive. I prefer to go with the Institute where possible, I am a very tech-savvy person and love seeing a faction creating new post-war content. Thanks for this deep dive.
Think of it from a developer pov, do you really want to code in a check every time you hit VATS just for the very beginning of the game that will never be used again?
@@TheNinthGeneration1 True, but details like this have been debated by the community at length for quite some time. Dev work and Lore don't always mesh.

I'm thinking Sean thought it might be a really cool idea for whichever surviving parent walked out of that vault to have a chance to raise him even though he's already over 60 years old when you go to get your child back you expect to get a child back and not an old man
Happy New Year Oxhorn to you and your family. A fantastic video and worth the wait. I played several play through of Fallout 4 and yet, you still taught me new things. Did mot realize how much more the Institute had to offer.I already logged in to see it for myself, LOL.

I honestly wonder what future utility those gorillas and the whole SZI could have (in-lore or otherwise). While I hope they don’t intend on replacing existing wildlife, seeing the introduction of new wildlife, or synthetic replicas of old species, could potentially shape the wasteland ecosystems for the better.
That's a little bit of an error on their part because there's people in the Institute and the other vaults and in Diamond City that haven't been exposed to the radiation. They could have used their DNA instead.
I think the background radiation affects everyone except people in the deepest vaults, and of all the vaults the only one with vault members was 81 and they were trading with the surface meaning they could have been exposed.
Hey Ox, I just wanted to let you know that I'm sorry you're not getting as many likes as you used to but I still enjoy your content as much as ever and want you to know that your content has quite literally saved my life multiple times
See I know a lot of people figure Nora wasn't in the military. But I always thought (In part due to lines like that in the Institute) that she was in fact a veteran. Perhaps one of many Americans who signed up for a GI Bill to get through school. Not too unusual. And it suddenly explains a looooot of stuff people call out as "plot holes" like... how she knows how to handle a gun. Or power armor for that matter. It seems to me the intent probably was that Nora was a former soldier. And because the Quest Writers at Bethesda kind of just get a free reign to do whatever they feel like? The USS Constitution quest just didn't mention it. Because either the lore was changed after writing that quest or they didn't care for it or whatever.
The reason people say the Sole Survivor IS a Synth is because you can use VATS System BEFORE you pick up the PipBoy in Vault 111. The FEV Lab video is going to be Immaculate.
He wouldn't be the SOLE SURVIVOR if he was a synth. VATS is a game mechanic they can't turn off and the SOLE SURVIVOR is the only human character in any game we can control and go into combat with before having a pipboy. The only character.
Developers said synth theory isn't true, vats was an oversight, and the institute terminal says gen 3 synths are immune to radiation, Nate/Nora are not

That chair in the room with the tubes looks like some sort of spinal tap, extracting the memories of a human to transfer to a synth. The process looks fatal. Also, it looks similar to the early Matrix taps the Machines used to harvest energy from humans.
its always bothered me that madison lee didnt immediately replicate the work her and james created with the water purifier. the importance of clean water cannot be overstated and youd think it would be a top priority.

Fact it is actually possible to turn lead in to gold it’s just more expensive to make in the reactor they can do it in the the amount of gold they get from it.
