What causes Tinnitus? What are the best Tinnitus treatments?
#tinnitus #tinnitustreatments #tinnituscure
WHAT IS TINNITUS?
Tinnitus is the name for when you hear noise in your ears or head, but it doesn't come from an outside sound. It is a very common problem. People with tinnitus usually hear ringing, buzzing, or whistling sounds.
WHY DOES TINNITUS HAPPEN?
Tinnitus is not a disease, but a symptom of a problem with your hearing system. The problem can be anywhere from your ears to your brain. Different people experience tinnitus differently.
TINNITUS CAUSES:
Many things can cause tinnitus, and we don't fully understand them all yet. Causes can include:
* ageing
* loud music or noise
* medications
* ear wax
* infections
* injury
* illnesses such as diabetes or Ménière's disease.
IS TINNITUS SERIOUS?
Tinnitus is not usually serious, but if it's a new symptom, it is sensible to get your GP to check it. This is especially important if your tinnitus is in just one ear, you have sudden hearing loss or you notice it is like your heartbeat/pulse.
INVESTIGATIONS:
Your doctor will look into your ears and will usually suggest a hearing test. Occasionally you may need further tests, such as blood tests or a scan, to find the cause.
TINNITUS TREATMENT:
If your doctor finds a cause such as ear wax or Ménière's disease, it will need treating.
For most people there isn’t an underlying cause to treat.
Most people can learn to cope with their tinnitus using simple self help measures.
If the tinnitus is an ongoing problem options include:
* hearing aids
* sound devices to mask the sound
* counselling for stress.
* An audiologist can help advise on what might suit you.
Self care for tinnitus:
* Reduce your exposure to loud noises.
* Quit smoking.
* In a quiet setting, a fan, soft music or low-volume radio static may help cover up the noise from tinnitus.
* Manage stress, since stress can make tinnitus worse.
* Dietary management of hyperinsulinaemia
OTOTOXIC MEDICATIONS:
Ototoxic means a drug or chemical that can damage the inner ear. Ototoxic medicines include -
* Certain Antibiotics, eg amikacin, gentamycin, kanamycin, neomycin, netilmicin, streptomycin, tobramycin, azithromycin, clarithromycin, erythromycin, vancomycin
* Antimalarials eg chloroquine, mefloquine, quinine
* Chemotherapy medications eg carboplatin, cisplatin, cyclophosphamide
* Diuretics (water tablets) eg bumetanide, ethacrynic acid, furosemide, torasemide
* Non-steroidal analgesics eg acetaminophen (paracetamol), aspirin (high doses), ibuprofen, indomethacin, salicylates

However watching and listening to you was very soothing and your delivery made me quite calm lol. Thank you. Years ago, without warning, I awoke with this constant ringing in both ears. At first I thought it would drive me "nutters" but as time went on, I got used to it. Then, about 3-5 years into the constant ringing, I woke one morning to find absolute silence. No ringing whatsoever. I thought "the silence" would drive me crazy, for sure. As that day went on, there was a slow transition back to the ringing and its not stopped since. Always a constant ring for at least the past 10+ years. Thank you for this information! And yes, your accent is noticed but still easy to understand. I find it lovely. Thank you for not allowing your accent to stop you from making your videos.

Very informative video, thank you! I struggled with tinnitus for about 5 years in my 30s before seeing a specialist. She gave me great advice that the best way to improve my quality of life was to accept the tinnitus and not expect it to go away or to find a miracle cure. This firm advice helped me tune it out. It is always there above everything else but accepting it is the first step to learning to ignore it. It's bloody horrible if you let it get to you.

Well that is a very lame advice! For any medical anomaly or issues from your brain to your heart to your ear, there is/are logical reasons to deal with and hopefully solve the issue. Just because your audiologist or ENT doc is clueless and can not give you the definite reason for your tinnitus, it does not mean it can not be explored and cured.

I have had tinnitus since I was a child. In fsct I thought everyone had it, until I mentioned to my mother that it was strange how the grasshoppers in my ear get louder when it is quiet. Of course I was taken to a doctor who said that there was nothing to be done. I have since been for hearing tests, had a brain scan and the answer is still the same. "Learn to live with it". I am now in my late seventies and hsve discovered that there are far worse things to worry about than the grasshoppers in my head.

I recently came across an article that came from a reputable site, a link to which I can't find at the moment, that suggested that, where the tinnitus arises from hearing damage, the brain, expecting but not receiving stimulation in certain frequencies, "fills in" the loss by self-stimulating, and sometimes the parts of the brain that processes nearby frequencies may expand to use the now under-stimulated parts. This has the effect of other frequencies now overlapping the missing frequencies, causing you to hear sound in those missing frequencies even though there is no actual signal. Imagine if large parts of the blue pixels on your TV started receiving signals from the nearby red pixels. This part at least sounds reasonable, especially since the brain is surprisingly plastic. Then the article went to to mention how this becomes the new normal, a change in memory, and suggested that an additional dose of magnesium could reset this "memory". The article did not make any promises, just that extra magnesium had been known to have a positive effect on memory and, in highly limited circumstances, could lead to an improvement in tinnitus. As the website was not trying to sell supplements, I give it a slight increase in reliability. However, it seems to me that even if that explanation was correct and boosted magnesium could somehow "clear up" that frequency, what would stop those nearby frequency processing areas from moving right back in unless you kept up and even increased the magnesium dosage? So, reasonable explanation for the problem, unlikely effectiveness from a solution. The website certainly described it better than I did.

The basics to help reduce it even heal from it is daily sunlight exposure, cold shower, clean nutrition (he talks about the keto diet), some parasites can even cause this, drinking a lot clean filtered water, stress reduction (mediation or something else), and so much more that you can do to help your body heal!

Have had tinnitus for many years and in the main I’m pretty sure it’s down to my life as a semi professional musician. And also as a retired IT a engineer, working in many noisy environments. I Certainly remember standing by a percussionist at a rehearsal who crashed cymbals very hard and remember at the end of the night my ears ringing. After that event they never have really stopped. And also one time when I went to a rifle range ( inside) and neglected to wear ear defenders; that started things going in my other ear. Mindful though that other medical conditions such as you describe also contribute to hearing issues. Oh and your accent is perfectly lovely.

Thanks for this. I'm prohibited from making any recommendation, but I''m happy to report that what worked for me was dipping a cotton swab in 3% food-grade hydrogen peroxide and then rubbing it gently around in my ear, day after day, for a week or so. The odd sound in my ear went away. I suspect that I had some sort of low-level infection and that the H2O2 oxidized the infection to death, gently. I don't know whether this would work for anybody else, but it worked for me. Forgive me, but for my health, I try to avoid doctors and hospitals, except in emergencies, if I am unconscious and bleeding out. Again, thanks for your presentation and food for thought.

I've had a high pitched continuous tone in my ears since early childhood. I recall mentioning it many times to my mother and she simply said "You are imagining it!". It got louder after I purchased my first Sony Walkman however I thought it was normal till a friend commented how quiet it was during a cave walk. All I could hear was the continuous high pitch and since then I realised other people couldn't hear it. If I focus on it, it seems to become louder and if I don't focus on it it becomes less obtrusive. Thanks Dr Sam for the informative video.

You've got cochlea hair cell damage. You need to inhibit the apparent loudness of the tinnitus by having hearing-aids fitted and they will cause RI Residual Inhibition where the signal to noise ratio is made wider and the tinnitus will seem greatly reduced. This is not masking it's better than that. Hendrix sent you deaf. When you hear less of the real external sounds you hear more of your internal sounds. Same if you wear ear plugs or hearing defenders for hours you'll hear tinnitus when you never heard it before.

I’m 37 and my tinnitus is noise induced from a rock concert I attended without earplugs when I was 20. It sounds like high-pitched hissing/trilling. It became unbearable during a period of high anxiety in my life. I do notice it gets louder and more pulsing when I’m stressed or upset - more blood to the head, maybe? Different foods also affect it. I’m super sensitive to loud noises also and have to wear ear plugs now in places most people wouldn’t. (E.g. at the cinema.) SSRIs treated my anxiety (to a degree), which in turn helped to take focus off my tinnitus. ‘Treatments’ and ‘cures’ are snake oil for the most part. Finding a way to live with it is pretty much all you can do.

14 months ago I had multiple symptoms, one of which was tinnitus. The cause of all my symptoms was functional B12 deficiency caused by genetic mutations of (MTHFR). For those who don't know, you can't utilize methylcobalamin (B12), in the Methionine cycle, without 5-Methylfolate. Once I started 5-methylfolate supplementation, all of my symptoms went away. Now, I'm so much more healthy. So healthy that I began working out in the gym for up to 5 hours per day. I'm 55 years old and have Crohn's disease. I see a hematologist tomorrow because my extreme athletic performance has lead to, what I believe is acute Iron deficiency anemia. Along with several new symptoms, the tinnitus has come back. So, I strongly believe that any form of anemia can cause this. I believe it so strongly, that I believe it's the leading cause.

My mom also had it but 20 yrs apart), ex smoker- chewer- and drinker. Got the tinnitus after catching a bad virus that took months to get over. Since then, when I got a cold or my allergies kicked up I would get hard coughing which would literally make my eyes black out briefly ( not fun when driving). Also have severe sleep apnea and used to get daily migraines. Since going on a bipap machine I only get migraines with bouts of severe coughing or when my neck acts up. So nice to hear someone pronounce the word tinnitus correctly! In the US, most people say tin I tis. An itis is an inflammation and tinnitus is not an inflammation!

Thank you for a frank, honest description of Tinnitus and especially the host of things that don't alleviate or even minimalize it. It can be annoying in a quiet setting but my case is not debilitating. Keep up the great videos-

So very well done! I am going to recommend your videos to other presenters. Whoever taught you how to prepare and deliver a presentation did a wonderful job of it, and you clearly learned well. Perhaps you took a class/course, or merely sought some coaching. Most noticeable, you plan your content clearly, you use your eyes, smile and other facial expressions well (likely from honest compassion), and you do not so much speak to the camera, but through the camera to your viewers. I truly look forward to your coming content, as well. Thank you so much.

I have tinnitus in my right year. Going to rock clubs to watch rock bands & standing in front of amps when I was younger & going to arena concerts added to it. Now whenever I go to concerts, I wear ear plugs.

I used to go to rock concerts myself and stand in the moshpit. Best experience ever. Coupled with a few pints didn't need anything else.. Now in my 3rd month with tinnitus and hating everything about it. I can't play or listen to music the same way. How is going to shows with earplugs, do u still enjoy it, do u wear a special kind so it doesn't block the sound altogether? Also do u drink alcohol?

Thank you for this video,and the information you provided. Take care, and look forward to your next video.
