@@grimmdanny Are you stupid by birth or by nature? The Sega Genesis Mini is using AMD Athlon ll that may sound an old processing power, but believe me, it is more than enough to run primitive games. There you go before you start talking nonsense be sure to know what is that you are talking about. 😠
Yes. EC had some weird controls but once you mastered them, finding out the secrets was awesome. I don't think any game after that had special moves as creative.
Mine is on preorder. I like the mini clones, because they are affordable and offer a variety right out of the box. When you did those sound comparisons, I did not hear a difference, except the sound effect for Mickey’s jump. I think the system looks fantastic.
@@GoKenIchiGo listen on a headphone or a good audio system, because there is a LOT of difference between the 2 audio clip... EQ, volume, fuzzyness, gain, reverb... etc
And perhaps best of all- they're legal. It feels good to know the right-holders are getting paid this way. The more retro minis they come out with, the more of them I'll be picking up.
Joe, this is probably the most comprehensive Genesis Mini "impressions" I've seen and I've watched a lot of other RU-vidrs with 20+min videos that weren't half this insightful. Secondly... I compared Thunderforce III's audio as you did against the MisterFPGA (Release 20190712) and Retropie 4.4 and the results were quite similar to the Mini's. Though the Retropie "pop" was more muted than the Mini but was still there. Tests were conducted using the same speakers used to play the video, Mister & Retropie.
@@SicklySeraph I hear this so much as the reason why it never makes it to the re-re-releases but they definitely had Sonic 3 and Sonic 3+K on the Gamecube, Xbox and PS2 Sonic Mega Collection in the early 00s. The Music was intact and not the PC replacement tunes. So I am not understanding how they dont have the rights. By the early 00s it was way past the time of the initial release. Side note, you can get Sonic 3+K on steam right now, was released in 2011. So whats the excuse for that?
@@volo870 Supreme Leader Trump and Kim Jong Un have exchanged blows, but fear not our brave leader has kept the northeast (areas immediately surrounding Trump Tower and Bedminster) safe. The rest of the country has become a nuclear wasteland, but on the plus side I have since grown a sixth and seventh finger on my right hand (which helps with Fortnite) and am currently growing a third eye...I think.
i would say you're looking for reasons not to buy the thing, as if it had to be perfect (id like that too). i think most people wouldnt even notice the lag if joe did not mention it
Yep. Fail after fail after fail. I have 2 Genesis consoles and a few games. I have never felt a need to even see if they work. I have so many systems and games. There's zero nostalgia for Genesis and near zero interest for it. I played one a few times and the games didn't resonate with me at all. Edit...back in the day I play the Genesis. Not the ones I own.
@@gc8972b I would and did from the comparison. It's annoying and being the audio freak I am, would be a deal breaker if I even considered buying it. Just mini consoles in general don't really interest me, but I can see how someone who loves collecting these things being very disappointed in the sound delay.
@@gc8972b that's untrue, I'm very much excited for an accurate representation of a mega drive. That audio delay would bug the hell out of me! I have a few of these games on the original system anyway so I'll just carry on playing them there. It wouldn't bother me on an rpg but with many of the fast paced games it would be awful. Maybe it's because I'm an audio programmer my standards are higher, if it doesn't bother you then it doesn't bother you!
Something to be note is that there are some testers that have tested this Mini console and states that the CPU is not running at the advertise 1.2Ghz and instead is running at a slower 1.0Ghz. Still this is a fantastic effort of a console for anyone to get, i like it even better than mine NES and SNES classic consoles.
Well M2 has 1 month to fix that audio delay issue or they can delay it untill they fix it,because if they will release it in september, many peoples wiil turn off it, including sega fans. This is a shame.
Wasn't the "volume slider" just for the headphone jack? I don't have a working model 1 anymore, but I'm pretty sure it only adjusted the volume for the headphones.
Why did the Sega Genesis and Sony PlayStation minis include the games that support the revised controllers... if they don’t include the better controller?! Street fighter without 6 button, Metal Gear Solid without DualShock. Nope.
That's why I don't have a PSX Classic. I played my PSX back in the day with only the updated controller. I might still end up getting one for emulation.
Actually, MGS can be played just with the digital controller, as the dual shock was released 1 year before MGS itself (meaning that in development they didn't know that controller yet), prove of this is that you can play MGS fine on a PSP, that does not have dual analog support phisically!
@Timothy Vreeland and i was talking about that MGS is not an "excuse" per se, as the game was designed with the digital PS controller in mind, so, he made a bad example there!
Loved the video, the ending was funny. I canceled my pre-order a month ago, the 3 button controller is a joke, especially when the 6 button is included everywhere else
Funny thing about Sonic Pinball is that it's super hard when you first start playin it... but then it becomes super easy once you get used to the controls
Choose this over hcg and rgt 85 review knew you would show any issue and compare it to the original. Also knew there would be a blast processing skit too lol
You clearly are nitpicking. You want to find something wrong. That's very POOR attitude. FYI, Joe is using a Beta Unit from E3. Other reviews have the near final stage SKU.
I do wish they had Jurassic Park, Toejam 2, Sparkster and Zombies Ate My Neighbors, but I'm still quite pleased with the selection. There's still some good ol faves I'll revisit and new ones for me to try out too.
I really enjoyed the honest look at this, but I'm still buying one for all the games I wouldn't have otherwise. The one busted controller isn't really a deal-breaker for me, as I plan on getting a pair of those Retro-Bit Saturn USB controllers (once the updated ones come out).
This seems like something that I could see myself purchasing with money, where I trade the cash for the physical item, and then return home to hook it up to the television set so that I might maybe can play it. I have hands AND eyeballs that coordinate together which allows me to play video games.
August 13th 2020 here, I bought one for the equivalent of 35 USD aprox. I think that was a fair price. One thing that I should add to this review is that if you change your console to German or Italian you will get the European Version of the games, for example: Castlevania: The New Generation and instead Contra Hard Corp it is Probotector... small details but I think it is nice...
Awesome video and so in-depth in such a short amount of time: respect! Audio sounds pretty snotty TBH.. the kickdrum sounds totally distorted in the sample. Also, so shitty to play eternal champions and SF2 with 3 button pad. I will definitely check out the Asian version.
The sega mini looks awesome! I think that the flaws are noticeable but minor, the only thing that worries me are the controls, I loved Virtua Fighter 2 since my childhood and the other games are solid so I'll buy it
If you are considering one of these just get it, it was very well done. Best "mini" yet, as well as SEGA did on this one can only hope one day we will get a Dreamcast!! I also think an original gameboy reboot with included games would be awesome by Nintendo.
Best mini yet ? I mean..all of them are good, well not at all but nes mini is awesome, snes mini is amazing, sega genesis mini is awesome, playstation mini is...not that great ahhahaaah
@@aleksandarsiljanovic1468 sorry should have added IMO, maybe it just struck a more nostalgic nerve than the others. I have every one you mentioned and I plan to pick up the TG16 in March!!
Suggestions for future episodes, games like Alien Rampage, an amazing DOS platformer, Realms of Chaos, another interesting one for DOS as well, Magical Cat Adventure for Arcade, another platformer, Sonic Before the Sequel and Sonic After the Sequel, interesting fan made Sonic games, worth looking at.
I'm getting the PAL version, and I hope I can play Contra somehow instead of Probotector... Also, would've liked to see Sonic 3 & Knuckles (instead of Spinball), Quackshot, Rocket Knight Adventures, Aladdin, Cool Spot, Thunder Force IV, Outrun, TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist, SoR 3 (screw the music, but I like playing as Sheeva), Ys III, Pier Solar (because why not), Shaq-Fu (instead of Eternal Champions). Hopefully, a hakchi-like tool will make all those "would've liked" lists moot.
Sega has been avoiding rereleasing Sonic 3 for a long time due to the music licensing issues. And I'm guessing they also didn't want to oversaturate the game list with Sonic.
@@stephenobrien6983 The specific licensing problem pertaining to Ice Cap's music didn't surface until late 2009, that's when Hard Times by The Jetzons was released publicly. Ever since then Sonic 3 saw very few releases, even though before that it was indeed featured in many collections and whatnot. It makes sense that the PC collection was basically the only exception where Sonic 3 got a rerelease in the last 10 years, seeing that Steam is a timeless platform Sega deemed it worth to pay huge royalties to release the game there and have people keep coming to buy it for what could be decades. Consoles only last a few years so it greatly diminishes the worth of S3's licensing fees on them.
I was in Japan when this was released so I picked up the Mega Drive Mini with the 6-button controller. I was also able to pick up the display kit which came with a faux Sega CD, 32X, and Sonic + Sonic & Knuckles carts. The Genesis Mini coming with the 3-button pads is a straight up dis to the Western fans. :(
8:41 yea nice trolling lie. ghouls and ghosts on genesis isn't even remotely close to being anywhere in the realm of easy. anyone can beat it on hard? yea sure, wtf?
I’ve heard others mention the sound lag, but nobody mentioned the tendency for hd setups to lag sound. Like in guitar hero games there’s usually a feature in the options to alter the speed sound comes due to hd connections. I’m not really sure what caused that or if it would even apply here or not. Doesn’t the mini connect via hdmi? While the original genesis did not.
Irrelevant. That would be the person's display causing the lag in the case of Guitar Hero. In that case, the audio preceeded the video, not the other way around like is happening here. It's possible that M2 tested this with a really old laggy HDTV and adjusted it to what THEY thought was in sync. But audio is not laggy just because it's "HD" or HDMI.
audio lag???? that has killed it for me, it drove me crazy on the Chinese clone machines. Joe you forgot the 16:9 is unusual because M2 did not stretch the image, they scaled it and resize all the game gui to fit.
Alisia Dragoon was the very first Genesis game that I bought brand new. Granted, I'd bought, borrowed, and rented from friends and stores. But, AD was the first game I bought retail. The $9.99 price was the biggest factor. I had tons of fun though. Totally worth it!
Some great games on here and a bunch I never managed to play. Can’t wait! I pre-ordered the Japanese one because of the minor styling differences on the console. Why they removed the cool font and color for “16-BIT” in the US I’ll never know!
Sega Genesis was my first 16 bit console, and I have bought every collection game they have released in USA that started during the PS2 era. That being said, I believe I'll save my money on the mini. Most of these games have been released, and rereleased. I lost my Sega love with AtGames consoles. I can emulate these games on a Pi 3, and really any recent hardware. Instead of giving us a mini, Sega could show some love with creating new classic side scrolling games in the vein of their newest Sonic. Give the fans and the world the new Streets of Rage, create a new sequel to a classic title that isn't broken, and isn't 3D. With today's game systems and PCs it is limitless to what could be released, or go the Nintendo route and give the fans a Sonic game maker. Great review, I had planned to purchase a mini for nostalgia, but I'll save my money.
Ohh I most definitely pre ordered the Genesis Mini and the Turbo Grafx 16 Mini as well and see how they are. Never owned the original consoles. Me being born in 1993 I have only witness the PS1, N64 and Saturn days.
So far I have already purchased the Sega Classics disc for Dreamcast and the PS2 & PS3, the Sega Classics Collections release for the Nintendo Switch and I own the ATGames mini console (which plays CARTS and has built-in games) When will it end??? lol
Don't be dissin' on mah ToeJam & Earl, boy. But in all seriousness, it's so refreshing to see that we're finally going to get a mini-Genesis that actually does the console justice instead of that paperweight AtGames crapped out. Yes, the game selection could have been a bit better (I'm still bitter that legal issues with the music have essentially cast Sonic 3&K, easily the best Sonic game on the Genesis and would be the best ever made were it not for Mania stealing that title, into the pits of hell never to be seen again), but I'm happy with most of what we've got here. And the lack of a six-button controller doesn't really bother me too much since they're typically only used in the fighting games, which I'm not all that into anyway.
No other reviews mentioned the audio lag, maybe a display issue? Also each time you compared differences between original audio and mini audio they sound identical. Maybe it's my ears but I'm not sure what differences you're hearing.
I probably won't be getting one. I have a Retropie that's doing me fine for playing Genesis games on my TV. If I wanted the presentation of a genesis I would just get into cart collecting and upscale like I have for my N64. I've been considering that a lot lately but need to invest in a better upscaler before I go hog wild on carts.
